Default Deciding who to start (plus what to do with a squad with loads of AMs)

How do you decide who to play in your starting lineup? Do you look at the key attributes, form, avg rating, value, age, something else?

On a related note, if you, for some reason (extended period of insanity of the manager ) have an abundant amount of fairly good AMs (C, CF, CR, R, L, AM/FCL, you name it, I've got'm), what do you play? If your main squad looks like this, what priorities would you have in the next transfer window?

You need to play a 4-1-3-2. The three central midfielders are crucial to this working especially the central of the three who can easily score 20 a sesason if he is talented enough.

I play this formation, attacking, direct passing and with an offside trap.

The DMC is also crucial for defensive solidity but also if the right type of player will chip in with goals. Recommended players are Gago, Makoun and Micah Richards. if you don't have a good DMC then this should be your priority.

This tactic works and I have now used it for four different teams in varying circumstances. It may need tweaked for certain games but it should provide you with a basis for using those players.

I have used this for Rangers, Peterhead, Newcastle and France. My record is as follows:

Rangers : ten seasons in charge, 9 League titles and 15 cups including the Champions League. I have been runner up in the CL 3 times.

Peterhead: Promotion from 2nd division to SPl and winning SPL twice in a row.

Newcastle: In my last 3 seasons using this tactic having previously used 442 1 EPL and runner up twice and two CL in a row having been knocked out on penalties by Man U in the qusrters when going for 3 in a row. Also 2 FA cups and two League cups.

France: 12 games in charge. Won 11, Lost 1. The loss was in a friendly when I played my fringe players. Winner of Euro Championships. Only conceded 1 goal during Euro Championships.

Hope this helps and wish you every success.

I tend to start out by playing the squad I inherit in the manner I think will best suit them - then over time I gradually move towards my own preferred system as I bring players in.

As far as assessing players - I tend to go with real-life knowledge generally and player attributes .... but if someones under-performing then I do tend to be somewhat harsh and drop them no matter who they are.

Would be interesting to know if you used the default player instructions or did you change a few things around?

Since I'm somewhere in 2017, names are no longer any help to me

It's my San Marino squad which I've brought into Serie A. I've already finished in the top spots for two or three seasons running, but can't make the final jump to league winners.

The AMs I have in the squad are almost all due to free signings which looked too good to leave. It did give me a bit of an unbalanced squad with all sorts of offensive players.

Oddly enough, my problem is both giving away games as well as not scoring enough goals. Or at least not having a player who dominates the scoresheets... Went from 343 to 352(attacking), 41212 (the narrow one, not the wide one) to 4132 now. Nothing truly satisfactory yet...

By the way, what do you call over/underperforming? 5-6 is bad, 7 normal, 8 is good? Or do you examine in-match stats more carefully than that?

Sell some of them make sure that you only sell ones that you really don't need and take into account their age and if they are likely to improve any

I'm obviously not as kick ass good as you then. I'm usually getting a good amount of 7s across the board, in a fairly good game there's usually an 8 or two. Fairly bad games score a lot of 6's with a 7 or two thrown into the bunch, plus a 5 or two perhaps.

In normal matches, 9s don't get given a lot, though they're not exactly rare. In really good games, a lot of 9s and a 10 is reserved for a striker with a super day or a super-assist giver.

Added to this: (I play in Serie A these days), my highest avg ratings are 7.3'ish to 7.6'ish I think.
