Every time I begin a new game, the first thing I do is assess my team.....blindingly obvious. However, whenever I get input from my assistant on individual players, it seems like his assessments are not in line with how I see my new players based on their attributes and history. I mean I like to get his input on things, but when I look at the player's attributes I don't always agree with his reply. Is the assistant giving input based on hidden attributes that I can't judge, or is it sometimes that they are just bad at assessing talent (or is it me?).
The other issue is with scouts. When I develop a shortlist and ask for these players to be scouted, I find the same is true. For instance, I was looking at some U18 keepers and identified ones I felt had some promise based on attributes and recent play, but the scouts branded them as dogs. I don't always believe their reports and have signed a few players and have generally been pleased with my signings despite their reports.
So what's the deal? How can I determine whether scouts and assistants are worth their salt when I join a new club? Any thoughts?
I generally prefer lower league management, so is the quality of scouts/assistants a reflection of this level?
i would just use your common sense, if hes got good stats or is young with decent stats give them a chance, they could be the next big player. ive discovered a few good players by not listening to them all the time.
I think your scouts and assistant manager are given a 'skill' rating based on the level of your team. That's certainly how the PC version works anyway.
Trouble is, if you get promoted there's no way of sacking your backroom staff and employing better ones, so I'd hope the game is artificially improving their skill level behind the scenes.
It's either that or every scout and assistant manager has a 'slightly better than average' rating, so that he'll get the majority of recommendations right but will still make the odd mistake.

That's how I see it too. I picked up a keeper that my scout didn't like. The guy has quickly made his way to be my number 1 and has been consistently good. I had him scouted before approaching him, and even though the scout didn't like him the guy's numbers were decent enough to take a chance on. He's been spot on for me and I'm very glad that I disregarded my scout's advice.
Once again, my scout got it wrong...I think. I was looking for a DC at the beginning of season 3 with Forest Green. I identified and scouted 2 players. The scout basically gave me a poor review of one young player while giving me a good review of the other. I passed on the one who got the poor review only to find that he had offers from almost every other team in the league. I offered a low cost contract to the other (to see how desparate he really was) and he accepted straight out. I haven't seen much of what they can do yet, but how does one improve their scout's abilities????
