Its season 2015 and France have accepted my application to become their manager.
I am manager of Rangers and have won the league every season bar the first season when I was pipped to the post on the last day of the season by Celtic. I have won the Champions League and countless domestic trophies. I am delighted and honoured to take on the role.
Now at club level I am loved by my fans and Board and praise flows every time we win a trophy. This doesn't seem to happen at international level.
I qualified for Euro 2016 and no message of thanks. I thought well Ok this should have been a given but then France have failed in qualification before for major tournaments in the recent ish past (1986 World Cup).
I began to notice though whenever I picked a squad the fans and media were disappointed about the ommission of certain players. Even when they were picked there was always someone else who should have been picked.
I was in charge of France for 12 games and lost only once in my last pre-tournament friendly when I played my fringe players. I led them to glory in Euro 2016 beating Spain, England and Italy en-route. I only lost 1 goal at the tournament and 2 goals in total in my 12 games in charge.
On winning the tournament there was not even a thanks or a well done. I expected national outpourings of joy, to be made a freeman of Paris, my own Vineyard or something similarly weighty. To be honest even a well done would have done.
In disgust I resigned and tolds the snail munchers where to stick there job. I will wait for Scotland to come calling.
Has anyone experienced something similar in International management or ever been praised by their association.
I'll look into these issues - this is the first time I've heard them reported so thanks for that, constructive comments are always useful in helping us continue to improve the game going forward.
yeah thats happened with me as well!! i was cruising it with Hibernian after a few seasons and Italy sacked their manager and eventually made me their manager as i seemed to have given myslef a good reputation. i went on to win euro championship and the world cup, never losing once, drawing once to Ireland at the start of my career, and also only losing 5 goals in 3 years. the board were only as impressed as "pleased" with me despite my success, and the media always complained that i left out a player.
In 2018 the Spain job became available so i applied and was offered the position. I kind of thought this might be a grateful nation if I achieved something on the basis of their tournament history.
The same problem when picking squads arises as the media always speculate about someone who is missing but I suppose that happens in real life too.
I cruised through qualification winning 9 games, drawing 1 with 36 For and 0 Against. I approached Euro 2020 with hope and anticipation and the Board asked me to reach the Semi-Final. I was though determined to win.
Anyway I reached the final to face France the team I had led to victory in 2016 and who showed me no appreciation. A 1-0 victory was very sweet considering the goalscorer was someone I had nurtured from 17 as a regen.
My National Association came out after the tournament and said they were happy with my performance which was at least something. All in all it was good to get one over the snail munchers after the way they treated me.
Bring on the World Cup the one trophy that I have not won.
