Saratov Gazyet
1st March 2004

Sokol Saratov
manager Mikhail Razhazan has had a busy winter in the transfer market. Losing a number of quality players including Sergey Gorlukovich and Alexey Zhidkov to retirement, the Sokol boss was forced to dig into shallow pockets in order to rebuild a squad devastated by age and dissent. With the club’s financial situation in disarray, Razhazan was compelled to sell fans’ favourite Petr Katchouro, Hansa Rostock paying £775k for the Belorussian’s services. Fortunately for the Saratov boss, Sevilla also saw something in Gennady Bliznyuk that he himself could not, the Spanish side parting with £1.1m for the signature of the forward.

Saratov Gazyet
The March Round-Up

Sokol Saratov
showed the kind of determination in their opening league game against Torpedo Moscow with which they will need to become increasingly familiar if they are to survive in the Russian Premier Division. A battling 0-0 draw was a credit to Sokol despite Dmitry Bugakov missing a penalty just before half time.

The Blues were unlucky away at Dinamo, however, as Stanislav Murygin scored in the final minutes to grab the point for the home side.

It took Sokol 218 minutes of the new season to score their first goal. New boy Eugeny Djachkov crashing home from 25 yards at home against FC Moscow. The visitors were quick to react, however, as Stanton Fredericks saw his free kick deflect off a Blue wall and into the corner of the net. Saratov were not to be denied, however, as Jan Slahor stole in ten minutes into the second half to lob the keeper and secure Sokol’s first victory in the top flight.

Sokol Saratov 2 (Djachkov 38, Slahor 54)
FC Moscow 1 (Fredericks 40; Zabotin s/o 89)

Travelling south to the Chechen capital Grozny, Saratov came up against last year’s Russian First Division champions. Jan Slahor gave Mikail Razhazan’s side an early lead, but the visitors had to rely on an inspired display of goalkeeping, including a magnificent late penalty save, from Platon Zakharchuk to earn a point.

July, 2005

Wednesday 6th
Russian Premier Division

Rostov 1 (Kanyenda 56)
Sokol Saratov 1 (Oreschuk 51)

Continuing a winless run Sokol were matched punch-for-punch by Rostov, both teams playing an open attacking game with the only surprise being the limit in goals.

Saturday 9th
Russian Premier Division

Torpedo Moscow 1 (Zyryanov 13; Isakov s/o 71)
Sokol Saratov 1 (Lakhiyalov 62)

A disappointing result considering the chances created, especially playing against ten men for 20 minutes. Another game without a win.

Saturday 16th
Russian Premier Division

Sokol Saratov 2 (Oreschuk 40, Slahor 45)
Dinamo Moscow 0

Victory! Relegation fodder Dinamo lucky to avoid being buried under a landslide as Zlydnev controls the entire match from midfield.

Saturday 23rd
Russian Premier Division

FC Moscow 3 (Fredericks 18, Bracamonte 20, Tchuisseu 60)
Sokol Saratov 1 (Slahor 2)

Disappointing to have thrown away an early lead but outplayed across the centre of the park.

Russian Premier Division

Sokol Saratov 4 (Oreschuk 4, 71, Slahor 13, 84)
Terek Grozny 2 (Khomukha pen 16, Golovskoy pen 83)

A great game to be involved in. The two-man midfield of Adjindjal and Zlydnev bossed the game from the start and the strikers put away what was given to them.

August, 2005

Saturday 6th
Russian Premier Division

Sokol Saratov 0
Alania Vladikavkaz 0

An entertaining game dominated by the home side, who were repeatedly denied by a brilliant Dmirty Khomich in the away goal.

Saturday 13th
Russian Premier Division

Krylja Sovetov 4 (Poskus 41, Tikhonov 64, Anyukov 67, Radimov 90)
Sokol Saratov 0 (Tyurin s/o 17)

Let down by the early sending off of the reckless Maxim Tyurin, Sokol could not keep pace with the ruthless Krylja, who were unlucky not to get more.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Saturday 27th
Russian Premier Division

Sokol Saratov 3 (Lakhiyalov 27, 46, Oreschuk 48)
Saturn 0

A goal a piece from Shamil Lakhiyalov and Roman Oreschuk in the first few minutes of the second half killed off a game that Sokol never looked like losing. Jan Slahor was outstanding up front. With 30 points the benchmark for survival, Sokol are almost safe on 26 going into the summer break.
