More injury news make my life miserable as Stefan Gislason is ruled out for two weeks with a damaged wrist. That does us no good at all as we travel to 2nd-placed BORUSSIA MÖNCHENGLADBACH looking for a point.
If our luck runs out, we’ll be in the bottom five soon. Gladbach are absolutely all over us for the entirety of the match, and yet goals from McShane and a wonderful free kick from Oslislo gives us an unimaginable win. Penned back for the whole match we actually escape to victory, Marc Ziegler in particular giving a performance unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Gladbach hit the post twice and bar once, but simply cannot score, for some reason. An absolute theft, but I’ll take any points I can have. Gladbach – St. Pauli 0-2 (0-1) Att. 45,653. Shots 33-8 – on target, 17-6.
0-1 McShane (28), 0-2 Oslislo (64)
Counter-attacking will be the trick this season also, I’m afraid – the team as a whole simply isn’t good enough to be dominating matches at this level. I’m determined to keep going with two strikers, but will have to look at bringing in reinforcements at the back.

We travel to Rome for our first leg meeting with S.S. LAZIO. They’re a good team, definitely, but despite having won Lo Scudetto as late as 2001, Lazio is not generally considered to be one of the biggest clubs in Italy. Also, they are probably the very least sympathetic, with thousands of openly fascist supporters putrefying the atmosphere at and around their matches.
A semi-injured Emanuele Calaiò starts off on the bench for this one, Pavel Fort coming in for him, the Czech striker having newly recovered from injury. We’re back-pedalling in a big way for large spells in the first half, but have no real problems until Delgado finds an opening just after the break to fire Lazio into the lead. Calaiò comes on and helps move us further upfield, and as Imeh knocks in the equaliser and Celsinho rifles in a free kick just before full time, we’re on the verge of a quite sensational victory. Delgado meanwhile rumbles in the equaliser in injury time, but still, what a good result! SS Lazio – St. Pauli 2-2 (0-0) Att. 45,276. Shots 18-13 – on target 9-8.
1-0 Delgado (46), 1-1 Imeh (81), 1-2 Celsinho (89), 2-2 Delgado (90+2)
That’s a great result for us and one which has lifted our spirits considerably. For the return match, Imeh and Calaiò will start upfront together. We played really well in Rome and certainly gave them plenty to think about.

It seems that result helped our confidence as, even with an injured el Hamdaoui and Pavel Fort ruled out, we battle furiously as highly thought-of HERTHA BERLIN come calling a little over a week later. We’re now ankle-deep in shït with injuries, but nonetheless do ourselves proud with a battling, gritty performance. We still end up on the losing side though as a wonderful performance by Bastürk is crowned by him netting their winning goal. But the performance in itself gives me hope, even if I’m realising that my expectations for the season have been a little bit over the top. St. Pauli – Hertha Berlin 0-1 (0-0). Att. 19,610. Shots 16-17 – on target 7-4.
0-1 Bastürk (73)
Finally some good news on the injury front – Thomas Gravesen returns in training after his injury. Also, folk hero Ian Paul McShane signs an improved contract which ties him to the club until June 2014, effectively meaning he will see out his career with us. And then SS LAZIO come to Hamburg for the deciding 90 minutes in our Euro Cup tie.
We come out flying and are a goal up after only five minutes, scoring from our first chance. Lazio now need two goals to beat us, so we give them a bit of their own medicine, retreating in a defensive catenaccio-style formation. Benji Imeh pulls into midfield while Nicolaj Hust and Ian Paul McShane lie just in front of the defence. It works a treat as Lazio are forced into a number of long-range efforts, and we close them down well on the wings, not letting anything through. Lazio see most of the ball, but create little of note while we occasionally threaten them on the break. Whatever smells a little dangerously, Marc Ziegler deals with. As the second half wears on the tackles are flying in from the increasingly frustrated Italians, and when they lose possession in the centre circle 11 minutes from time, Emanuele Calaiò’s run is fed brilliantly. The Italian sticks the ball in the net and, to add insult to injury, adds another one five minutes before the end. A 5-2 aggregate win is not just surprising, it is a sensational result – and it takes us into the group stage of the Euro Cup. St. Pauli – SS Lazio 3-0 (1-0). Att. 19,641. Shots 17-22 (9-6). |

After learning that the receipts from the match constitute a new record - £600,000 earned from a single match is a lot of money for us - the groups are drawn. Out of the hat come CLUB BRUGGE
AZ ALKMAAR
CSKA MOSCOW
EVERTON
Three teams will progress to the knockout stage. AZ Alkmaar and CSKA should be the whipping boys of the group, and I’m confident we can get points off both Club Brugge and Everton also. Our first match will be played on 15th October.
Two league matches follow in rapid succession, and I’m starting to worry a little bit about our performances. First, we are dirt lucky to escape ROSTOCK with one point courtesy of a strike from Calaiò – in his 50th league match for us – and a hack off the line from Ian Paul McShane ten minutes from time in an encounter where luck and a superb goalkeeper saved us from losing by three or four goals. Then, at NÜRNBERG three days later, more of the same. Although not quite as bad a performance from us, the team propping up the table by a good margin have us, at times, all over the place. Key men Gravesen and Vanhoevelen pick up injuries during the course of the game also taking its toll. It’s still early doors, nonetheless we need to pick up our early season league form if we are to stay in the race for European football next year as well. Otherwise, we’ll just have to win the Euro Cup, of course. Heh. 27.9: Hansa Rostock – St. Pauli 1-1 (1-1). Att. 28,330. Shots 16-7 (8-4)
1-0 Kurz 28, 1-1 Calaiò 41.
30.9 Nürnberg – St. Pauli 2-2 (1-1). Att. 34,265. Shots 17-6 (7-4)
1-0 Röttger 3, 1-1 Calaiò 26, 1-2 Calaiò 56, 2-2 Neymayr 74.

Early October then and as the stadium expansion is completed, we now have a capacity of 25,387. Which makes no sense, since our average attendance is barely 20,000 and usually below that. Also, Kenny Vanhoevelen signs an improved five-year contract with the club as I’m looking to ensure some continuity for the foreseeable future.
Our league form continues to deteriorate as BOCHUM outplay us. Now without Nascimento, who is out injured, it’s evident that the lack of depth in defence could cause us trouble later on in the season. Young Steffen Zimmermann comes in and does very well, but behind him, there’s no one in line. Either way we’re chanceless at Bochum, and yet another goal from Calaiò does us no good. Bochum – St. Pauli 2-1 (1-0). Att. 28,564. Shots 26-8 (12-2)
1-0 Misimovic 19, 2-0 Dahl 61, 2-1 Calaiò 80.
St. Pauli 8 2-3-3 14-14 pt. (10th)
Crâp news again as McShane and Kasperidus, too, are ruled out of our Euro Cup match at home against CSKA. When Celsinho hobbles off injured early on it effectively means we’re chanceless with the rest of the team as off-form as possible. The Russians are all over us and should have won by more. Add to that that Mounir el Hamdaoui, Kamal Jasmath, Thomas Gravesen and Emanuele Calaiò also come off the pitch in an injured condition and we finish the match with nine players left on the field, you will understand that this match was no fun at all. Luckily, AZ and Brugge can only draw in their match, so we’re just one point behind the pack. EURO Cup, group stage 1st match
St. Pauli – CSKA Moscow 0-1 (0-0). Att. 13,965. Shots 7-28 (5-11)
0-1 Fedorov 71. |

It’s no surprise, perhaps, that our unfit and/or semi injured lot fall at another hurdle three days afterwards when BIELEFELD, 12th in the table, come calling. A terrible first hour does the damage, and though we pick ourselves up in the last thirty minutes, it’s too little, too late and we never manage to find the equaliser. Emanuele Calaiò plays an eye-raisingly poor match, and his replacement Benji Imeh is not better. Only my centre halves and goalie Ziegler are doing their job these days. What to do? I don’t know, the transfer window’s closed!
Just a few days after that we lose again, at home to Werder Bremen. We’re in dire straits, personell-wise, to the degree that 17 year old left back Sebastian Eckl is brought up from the reserves to make his league debut. He fares well enough, but having two teenagers with less than 15 league matches between themselves in defence against Bundesliga teams is no good. Another defeat. 18.10

After ten games, then, the table looks thus.

Holders - FC Bayern| Pos | Inf | Team | | Pld | Won | Drn | Lst | For | Ag | G.D. | Pts | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 1st | | Bochum | | 11 | 8 | 1 | 2 | 19 | 9 | +10 | 25 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 2nd | | FC Bayern | | 10 | 7 | 2 | 1 | 24 | 8 | +16 | 23 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 3rd | | Hertha BSC | | 11 | 7 | 1 | 3 | 18 | 12 | +6 | 22 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 4th | | Schalke 04 | | 11 | 6 | 2 | 3 | 21 | 12 | +9 | 20 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 5th | | Gladbach | | 11 | 6 | 2 | 3 | 15 | 9 | +6 | 20 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 6th | | Dortmund | | 9 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 12 | 7 | +5 | 18 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 7th | | HSV | | 10 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 16 | 12 | +4 | 17 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 8th | | SC Freiburg | | 11 | 5 | 2 | 4 | 13 | 15 | -2 | 17 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 9th | | Burghausen | | 11 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 8 | 13 | -5 | 13 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 10th | | Bielefeld | | 9 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 12 | 12 | 0 | 12 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 11th | | Werder Bremen | | 10 | 2 | 6 | 2 | 8 | 8 | 0 | 12 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 12th | | 1.FC Köln | | 11 | 3 | 3 | 5 | 13 | 16 | -3 | 12 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 13th | | Rostock | | 10 | 2 | 4 | 4 | 9 | 13 | -4 | 10 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 14th | | St. Pauli | | 11 | 2 | 3 | 6 | 14 | 18 | -4 | 9 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 15th | | RW Essen | | 10 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 8 | 15 | -7 | 9 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 16th | | Leverkusen | | 11 | 2 | 1 | 8 | 6 | 14 | -8 | 7 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 17th | | VfB Stuttgart | | 10 | 0 | 5 | 5 | 10 | 19 | -9 | 5 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 18th | | Nürnberg | | 9 | 0 | 3 | 6 | 5 | 19 | -14 | 3 | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phillip Kasperidus has been far from impressive lately, and thinking ahead to the re-opening of the transfer window on 1st January, I’m looking towards German forward David Odonkor of Ipswich in the Championship as a possible replacement. He is very versatile, agile, good on and off the ball and can play left, right or centre. Another possible candidate might be Aaron Lennon of Leeds United, also in the Championship, but he’s a little on the expensive side. BAYER LEVERKUSEN away; another defeat comes our way in front of a disappointing crowd of just 16,000 and a bit. I don’t really know what to do to turn the ship around at the moment. We’re uninspired and ineffective, in addition to all our injuries lately. We create next to nothing in front of their goal, and they are third from bottom remember. This was possibly the worst game we’ve played since I took over. Luckily though we only conceded one, but we’re looking like relegation material at the moment. Mounir el Hamdaoui is out injured and it shows – without an attacking left midfielder and a few key players short of top condition, we’re toothless offensively. Not even Emanuele Calaiò is performing to his standards. Bayer Leverkusen – St. Pauli 1-0 (1-0). Att. 16,481. Shots 13-4 (8-1)
1-0 Lauth 29.
St. Pauli: 11 2-3-6 14-18 9p. (14th)
Without a goal for four matches, we get a chance, however, to pick ourselves off the floor against AZ ALKMAAR. Another defeat here will put our chances of progression from the Euro Cup groups at risk. Luckily, AZ are shît and we take control from the off. Against a bizarre 3-5-2 formation without a holding midfielder, el Hamdaoui, who returns from injury, has a rout in Holland. Calaiò gets an important goal from a cross the Dutchman puts in, and Celsinho buries them early in the second half, burying a rebound from a few yards out. EURO CUP, group stage, match 2.
AZ Alkmaar – St. Pauli 0-2 (0-1). Att. 7,467. Shots 5-15 (0-6)
0-1 Calaiò 35, 0-2 Celsinho 54.
The win in Holland is followed by a welcomed two-week respite for international matches. Benji Imeh, Clayton Zane and Goran Sukalo all receive call-ups from their respective countries, and we close a deal to bring an exciting, young player to Millerntor in January. Jose Luis Ortiz will join us from Trier for a fee of £500,000. He’s primarily a left winger, but can be used in the center of midfield in an attacking role as well.
On 15th November it’s back to league duty with the televised local derby with HAMBURGER SV, and it’s not a match suited for those with a weak heart. Not so much for the play, which is gritty and tight, but for the level of violence. Kenny Vanhoevelen is sent-off after just five minutes for a horrible tackle that earns him a straight red; eight bookings and one red card are dished out before the break, followed by another four yellow and a red after the break – this time luckily one of their players being sent for an early shower. It finishes goalless after we put one hundred per cent effort into keeping them out. Thomas Gravesen might have won it for us with a huge chance two minutes from time, but blew it.
We once again perform well in Europe, though. EVERTON do sneak a point off us, but we play well. Celsinho whacks home from 20 metres for us but, in an evenly-fought match, they equalise. Another physical match – nine players are booked. With four points from the first three games we occupy the third and last place of those that will advance from the group. 15.11.09
HSV – St. Pauli 0-0. Att. 55,476. Shots 10-9 (2-4)
19.11.09
St. Pauli – Everton 1-1 (1-0). Att. 14,991. Shots 15-12 (7-7)
1-0 Celsinho 19, 1-1 Moran 64.
St. Pauli: 3 1-1-1 3-2 4p (3rd/5)
Our only chance at filling the ground comes just three days later as BAYERN MÜNCHEN steps onto the Millerntor grass (and even now we still have 5,000 empty seats). Once again they look invincible at the top of the table, but like last year, our aggressiveness slaps them around in the opening minutes. Four minutes in and Ian Paul McShane heads home a Gravesen corner – and only eight minutes after that again, Nascimento executes the penalty kick perfectly after Cosmin Uilacan - making a rare appearance – is fouled in the box. They obviously recover (they always seem to) though, and at the break, they’ve equalised. The second half is a long, hard battle to remain on equal terms, even though Munich have a player sent off. We scrape the draw after a great defensive effort and are applauded off the pitch. We’re still in a precarious league position though, and a gap is starting to open up to the teams directly above us. Also, we’ve already garnered 34 yellow cards this season. That makes us officially the most dirty bunch of psychos in the Bundesliga (which I quite like, really), but means we’ll have a fair few suspensions to deal with in the spring. St. Pauli – Bayern Munich 2-2 (2-2). Att. 20,765. Shots 7-8 (5-3)
1-0 McShane 4, 2-0 Nascimento 12, 2-1 Pazzini 16, 2-2 Pazzini 37.

Days later, our £1,400,000 bid for David Odonkor is accepted and the player is more than keen to join us. We’ll happily have him – the German has been on excellent form this season. To celebrate, we make sure of progress in Europe by a fine win in Brussels against CLUB BRUGGE. It looks like a goalless draw all the way, until substitute Benji Imeh passes four players on his own before scoring eight minutes from time in an equally-fought and relatively exciting match. EURO CUP, group stage, match 4
Club Brügge – St. Pauli 0-1 (0-0). Att. 25,959. Shots 13-15 (8-7)
0-1 Imeh 82.
Despite the win however, my worries over Emanuele Calaiò are growing. My star striker has scored once in the last nine matches. I might have to do the unthinkable and drop him from the team if this keeps up, since he hasn’t even played well in the last two months.
We may be progressing in Europe, but our league form continues to deteriorate. Fûcking BURGHAUSEN beats us courtesy of two fine individual efforts. El Hamdaoui spurns two huge chances, and although we play quite well and create enough chances to win it, we don’t. Oh, and another five bookings are picked up. Hm. Looks like a relegation scrap is on the cards, then. Burghausen – St. Pauli 2-0 (1-0). Att. 8,032. Shots 12-14 (5-6).

[i](Sorry for the lack of updates, I bet you've missed me ...)[/]
Against the bottom of the heap, STUTTGART at Millerntor we finally manage a win, if only by the narrowest of margins. Emanuele Calaiò’s goal drought puts the striker on the bench and his replacement Benji Imeh takes his chance well. The Nigerian wins the match for us by scoring from a counter attack initiated by captain McShane. That’s our first league win in 11 matches, and a bloody important one at that. McShane is later picked for the team of the week after a very good performance from the Scotsman. St. Pauli – Stuttgart 1-0 (1-0) Att. 17,813. Shots (on target) 17-4 (9-1)
1-0 Imeh 18
We’ve won some of our confidence back with the win against Stuttgart, and just four days after, second-placed Dortmund are comprehensively thrashed as Emanuele Calaiò marks his return to form by bagging a brace. Towards the end, Cosmin Uilacan gets a rare goal from Goran Sukalo’s pass. Two important wins in a row gives us some breathing space and we seem back on track again all of a sudden. Dortmund are desperately unlucky not to get something from this end-to-end encounter, but I’ll take any points I can get my hands on. St. Pauli – Dortmund 3-0 (0-0) Att. 19,793. Shots (on target) 18-16 (8-5)
1-0 Calaiò 58, 2-0 Calaiò 63, 3-0 Uilacan 89.
St. Pauli 16 4-5-7 20-22 17pts. (14th) |

(again a big sorry to those following this thread - work has been overwhelming lately and sadly, I do not make my living playing FM 2005!)
Euro news – we’re drawn against French Sochaux in the first knockout round of the Euro Cup, not an impossible task, for sure.
Our last match before the winter break gives me another boost after the fantastic performance against Dortmund as we take on and massacre our designated “friendly” club FC KÖLN by the same score. Calaiò gets a brace and Imeh adds one a quarter from time in the best match we’ve played for years. 8th-placed Köln are quite simply outplayed and we’re on fire, producing three elects for the team of the week – the always reliable Kenny Vanhoevelen, the talismatic Mounir el Hamdaoui and hard working veteran Thomas Gravesen are all amongst the Bundesliga’s finest this week. We’re fiery upfront and rock-solid at the back – and my initial worries over a potential relegation struggle are put to bed. St. Pauli – FC Köln 3-0 (0-0) Att. 18,053. Shots (on target) 1910 (9-4)
