Saturday - 20/08/05, Championship game 4

Sheff Utd v Burnley

After getting over the curse of TV Robinson rallied his men and got them fired up for the away day in Sheffield. Last season they won and lost games against the Blades today he hoped they could get over the defeat of last week and get back to winning ways. Albeit very early in the season Sam was optimistic in how the rest of the season would pan out. They were off to a good start other than the Millwall game, if they were to get a win today it would keep them in the top two. He wasn’t daft and didn’t expect this good fortune to last for long but if they could establish a good base in the early stage of the season it may propel them to have a much improved season than the last campaign. After last weeks defeat Robinson brought in Dinning and Malcolm to the centre of midfield to give his side a solid hard to break down feel, looking to catch United on the break.

As expected it was United who were pouring forward getting chances, Robinson planned for this, he hoped his team could soak up the pressure. What he hadn’t planned on was United getting a very well worked goal. A Duff throw in deep inside his own half was won by Armstrong who nodded it to Harley. He then passed it back to Tonge and moved out to the wing where nobody tracked him. Tonge gave him the ball back where he was free to pick out Gray on the penalty spot where he headed United in front. Fortunately it wasn’t too long before Burnley were level, Moore wining the ball from a Valois cross and his shot was too hard for the keeper to keep out. A Blake corner was headed way out to the halfway line where Duff picked it up and launched the ball back up field. Moore got up above his marker and flicked it on into Blake’s path and he finished superbly to put Burnley in front. 40 minutes had passed when one of the best goals you’ll see all season put Burnley 3-1 ahead. Camara, Malcolm and Valois working the ball between them up the left flank, Valois then slid the ball to Blake who was standing on the left corner of the box. He hit it instantly and it curled outwards then back in towards the goal, it hit the inside of the far post and nestled in the back of the net, everybody was amazed and the Burnley fans went mental. The second half was much like the first, end to end with plenty of chances for both sides. Unlike the first there was no goals dispite how close both teams had come.

Wednesday – 24/08/05, League Cup Round 1

Burnley v Bournemouth

Last season Burnley bowed out at the first hurdle, John was adamant they would not do the same this season. They had been knocked out by Leeds a team considered better than Burnley, and they were as it turned out. Bournemouth were the opposition this time round a team in the league bellow Burnley, so Robinson’s men were the favourites going into the game. He knew it was going to be no pushover but he also expected nothing else than a home win. A good run in the cups is always good for the fans and the business. Financially the club were a huge success, last season they were well in the red now they were pushing forwards to get a million in the bank. With the drastic finances of some teams keeping the club secure financially was always a big agenda for Robinson. Victory on the pitch was a higher priority for him however and he wanted to keep their good form going.

As kick-off came around Sam as usual was in his seat with a few beers inside him, he noticed that the ground was only a third full. This disgusted him it maybe a midweek game against a lower league side but it was no excuse for the ground to be this empty. He wondered what the modern day football fan was coming to. It was of no surprise to anyone that Burnley controlled the game, they only managed to create a few chances however, Blake hitting the post after lobbing the keeper. Burnley had a throw in deep inside the opposition half, Duff threw the ball to Skulason who gave it straight back to Duff. He then crossed to the far edge of the six yard box where Valois nodded it down for Blake to side foot home. Bournemouth only managed a couple of half chances in the whole of the first half. They did manage to create a couple of chances in the first ten minutes of the second half, but it was Burnley who scored. Malcolm powered a header home from a Valois corner. Bournemouth did create more chances for themselves but it was Burnley who always looked the more threatening, though neither side found the back of the net.

Well I'm affraid Bill Gates has well and truely shafted this one. Fortunately I had already finished my degree before my computer decided not to load up past the welcome screen, or he would have shafted that too. I was enjoying this story and game

Ho-hum I enjoyed playing as Burnley so much I think I will try another story with them. Different to this one hopefully. So for any people who may have been following this or dropping in time to time appologies.
