Used quite a lot in interface daeisgn, single pixel selection on a new layer with a stroke appied can give a great effect. On nav bars esspecially.

Personally i think those specific selection tools have just 'lingered' throughout the evolution of PS. I myself have never used them, not that that should mean much... but i do feel they're very specific in their purpose/function. The average user won't find much use for them.
Dragging out a canvas wide 1px high selection manually takes much less time then setting up the options for the column selection marquees.
This is a very good question/observation, and not one that's addressed usually.
Good 'exploration' fperry. [righton]
PS: i prefer using Paths for iFace designs Rick. Much more practical. But using Paths for the effect you've described would be cumbersome.

I use the one pixel marquee several time a year when I'm creating a screen image and the anti-aliasing at the edge is ragged for whatever reason. Usually this means there is a partial fringe of white. A one pixel selection can be blurred (using all layers) and create a good anti-alias result. It can be moved one pixel in, copied to a new layer and moved one pixel out to hide the 'fringe'. It can be expanded by a pixel or two if the issue requires.
This was particularly useful when using the Classic Frames plugin from Human Software. The frames were great fun but always left a one pixel wide fringe on two sides of the resulting image.

Very creative use, fperry! one could even create a challenge whose rule would be to use the single marquee tool.
My take: codebarred text

The simplest rule would just be that the objective is to use the Single Pixel Marquee tools.
