It's amazing what success can do for a city. Maastricht is buzzing and Benny Gomez is in the centre of it.

A slightly boozy Gomez walked back towards his apartment from the director's abode (where last night the MVV players and staff partied long into the morn) but decided to sidetrack back to the stadium. Every man and woman at the football club was personally thanked by the Colombian from the tea ladies and club shop lackies to the groundskeeper and his apprentice, it was the kind of moment that Gomez loved, the moments he cherished as a career coach.

At the apartment after the continual gushing of praise towards him for the past 48 hours he found a sobering message. Obviously from Boris passed on (and probably censored) by Florent it was simple in the way that only an eastern european millionaire mining magnate could be.

'Nice start. You realise next season will be ten times as hard. Good luck!'

The front door pounded but Gomez turned and headed to bed. The media would wait another day - after all he was not a big fan of the media anyway - they ask too many questions. He was out before his head touched the pillow. The media posse eventually conceded and as one headed towards MVV assistant coach Rob Delahaye's apartment up town.

Cheers OMDave! I'm not into reporting every game at this stage at least so it's more of a game log with a personal touch.

MVV First Team Stats - 2004/05

The Morrocan Houssain Ouichou has comfortably taken out the MVV fan's player of the year award after an excellent season on the left of midfield, he was closely followed by Leonardo, Kruijer and Bryssinck. The goalscoring award went to Leonardo with ten strikes, however after the signing of Park Joo-Young and Lars Nilsson in the winter break the goals were well spread. Park and Rogier Molhoek shared the most outsanding young talent award and the honour of best club man was lauded upon the young shoulders of versatile defender Alexandre Bryssinck. To claim the division 1 title with such a young squad is a perfect precursor to what this brave club will be up against next season.

As eight clubs began fighting it out for the final two places in the premier division Gomez recieved an electronic receipt for his ticket to Athens.

Despite his more recent inclinations a wide smile came over Gomez's face as he walked out of Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport and breathed in the warm air. Memories of Manizales flooded back however he selflessly blocked them out and headed for a taxi - this was business.

The ferry to Ios from Piraeus was gorgeous and it was soon to be clear that this trip was as much about relaxing as it was business. Florent and Boris were down at the harbour when Gomez arrived - Florent had in fact been with Boris on Ios for the past three weeks. His life had been threatened in Paris and on communication of this Boris insisted that he leave France immediately, any trace of the plan could not be divulged for it could be sure that Gomez's life would be endangered.

Florent appeared to glow in these new conditions and there would be no plans to return to France in the near future.

Two weeks of days in the sun and nights coordinating business plans ensued. Gomez day by day began to open up to Boris and soon realised why he had been selected for the job. It was the openly trusting nature of Gomez which was essential to the greater plan, after all how could one become a successful football manager on the continent without an amicable demeanor and reassuring nature. It could be assured that despite his nature this plan would create controversy and Gomez would have to deflect this constantly.

On return from Greece it was obvious that despite the good nature of the previous two weeks thus was serious business. Next season would be seriously trying for Gomez as the funds have not been cleared and MVV were not about to outlay cash on such a gamble. Understandably.

MVV Player Movement - Summer 2005

MVV Maastricht's hopes of splashing out in the transfer market this summer have been dented by the club's desire to clear their debts after last season. After manager Gomez was given a budget of 18K euros he has not surprisingly turned to free transfers and long term loan players to support his existing playing squad for the coming season.

Transfers In| Date | Person | From | Fee | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 11.7.2005 | Atuahene, Eric | Free Transfer | Free | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 13.8.2005 | Proshyn, Andriy | Free Transfer | Free | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 14.7.2005 | Nilsson, Lars | Heerenveen | Loan | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 15.7.2005 | Gomes | PSV | Loan | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 24.7.2005 | Kalou, Salomon | Feyenoord | Loan | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 2.8.2005 | Luijten, Ramon | RBC | Loan | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 31.8.2005 | Tiendalli, Dwight | FC Utrecht | Loan | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 31.8.2005 | Wuytens, Jan | PSV | Loan | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Disgruntled backup keeper van den Ban has joined veteran defender Verberne and young Belgian striker on the way out at De Geusselt.

Transfers Out| Date | Person | To | Fee | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 2.7.2005 | Verberne, Maurice | Free Transfer | Free | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 6.7.2005 | van den Ban, Serge | RBC | Free | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 25.7.2005 | Aelbrecht, Kristof | Zwolle | €20K | | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Gomez
I am very pleased despite the lack of funds as we have managed to cover most of the areas I was looking to strengthen with long term loan players. Gomes is unlucky to be on the outer at PSV and I am very pleased to be able to offer him the number one shirt. Salomon Kalou is a sensational winger which will allow Leonardo to float a bit more in midfield - i'm very surprised that Feyenoord did not have greater plans for the Ivorian this season. The permanent signings Atuahene and Proshyn will add versatility and quality depth to the strikers and defenders respectively.
