Dutch Division1 - Stage 1

The realisation that MVV had only just missed out on a playoff placing after the first stage of the division one season encouraged Gomez and indeed the board agreed that they were definately travelling in the right direction. Six goals from Leonardo and strong support from the likes of Ouichou, Brncic and Bryssinck had the board smiling. The only negative was the loss of veteran Belgian midfielder Brncic for over two months with a groin injury.

Fortuna Sittard claiming the first play-off place in this unique system which rewards clubs for playing strongly during any of the four stages of the league. An interesting system, merit wise but quite congusing it must be said.

Injury Report

Influential midfielder Drazen Brncic will be out of action until the new year with what has been diagnosed as a torn quadracep (thigh) muscle. This is a major blow to MVV - Brncic who signed from Venezia two years ago has been an inflential member of Benny Gomez's midfield and will be sorely missed.

Gomez
At thirty-three I wasn't sure what sort of a role Drazen would play for me this season but his loss will surely be felt - so far this season he has starred in the middle of the park holding anchoring an in experienced side brilliantly.

This will be a good test as I now need one or two of the youngsters to stand tall in Drazen's absence, at his age I don't know how long his body will hold up so we certainly need to be looking forward. I expect Rogier Molhoek to step straight into the middle now with support from the yougsters Gokhan Balci and Joas Siahaya, I believe Molhoek will have a great future in football and this is why I brought him over from RKC as my first signing at MVV - he is a mentally tough, determined footballer with a deadly right foot.

Houssain was signed in the summer prior to my appointment and it is one of the best moves the club could have made, a versatile forward he is more comfortable on the left of an attacking midfield however used at times as a striker he has shown the creativity and work rate to cause concern to most defences in this league. The sort of player i hope to built a successful side around - Houssain plyed his trade at Volendam for four seasons so he knows what this league is all about (scoring 5-10 goals a season) and i believe he will be a strong driving force behind our quest towards the top league here in Holland and silverware at MVV Maastricht before too long.

Dutch Division 1 - Period 2

After going 2-2-4 for the second period of the division one season Gomez was feeling the heat from the media (although not from the less than ambitious board!) and knew that fresh blood was required at MVV over the winter break if things were to be turned around by the summer. The Belgian strikers Aelbrecht and Caracciolo were really struggling and too much pressure was on Leonardo to carry the goalscoring load, this would have to be remedied immediately. During such a bad period of results Molhoek and Bryssinck joined Leonardo and Ouchiou as players who could hold their heads high, but as a whole the club could not be happy with their performance of late.

So Excelsior claim the second guaranteed play-off place over the unlucky Telstar who after a terrible first stage have fought back admirably to mid-table however a promotion place still sees a long way off.

Despite their recent form MVV hold on in seventh position in the first division however the like os Fortuna Sittard, Helmond and Volendam are going to be hard to peg back as the season really heats up after the winter break.
