No Joy For Tangerines

Dundee United were unable to withstand visitors Celtic and slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Tannadice with goals at either end of the game. Paul Ritchie opened the scoring for Celtic after just three minutes but despite dominating play the visitors had to wait until the 88th minute before Gary McCutcheon added their second.

Even Stevens At Parkhead

Celtic held visiting Inter Milan to a creditable 1-1 draw in last night’s Champions League group game at Celtic Park. Inter opened the scoring on 40 minutes when Javier Zanetti scored with a low shot but the home side evened things up through Gary McCutcheon with less than 15 minutes remaining. On balance the Scots will be disappointed with the result as both McCutcheon and Kiegan Parker hit the woodwork. In the other group match Nantes made heavy weather of beating visiting Olympiakos despite the Greeks being reduced to 9 men in the first half.

Ten-Man Rangers Hold Out

Rangers central defender Marvin Andrews went from hero to villain in yesterday’s televised Old Form encounter at Celtic Park. He scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game after 25 minutes but was then dismissed in the second half for a dangerous two-footed challenge. But a below-par Celtic were unable to take advantage of their extra man and barely troubled Sander Westerveld in the Rangers goal. Celtic are now tied on 18 points with Rangers and Livingston but head the table on goal difference.

Nantes Make Their Point

Celtic returned from their trip to France with a 1-1 draw with Nantes. In what was a very even contest the home side opened the scoring 10 minutes after the break and their resistance was only broken when James McFadden scored from the penalty spot in the 81st minute. The point is enough to put Celtic top of their group but Milan now have a game in hand over the Scots.

Alan Is the Main Man For Pars

A vintage performance by 36-year-old Dunfermline keeper Alan Main was instrumental in his team gaining a valuable if unexpected point in an exciting 2-2 draw at home to Celtic yesterday. Kevin Twaddle scored his first goal for Dunfermline since his move from Hearts at the start of the season to give the home side the lead shortly before half time. Celtic pressed hard for the equaliser but were kept at bay until Gary McCutcheon scored after an hour. When Gary Teale added a second 15 minutes later it looked like curtains for Dunfermline but they kept plugging away and were rewarded when Danny Hatcher found the net with less than 10 minutes remaining. Main kept his team in it with half a dozen terrific stops through the game and, not for the first time this season, he demonstrated that there is certainly life in the old dog yet.

No Cup Joy For Killie

Celtic came away from their League Cup 3rd round tie at Rugby Park with a comfortable 4-0 win after a performance full of pace and power that Kilmarnock had no answer to. The home side managed to hold out until 41st minute before Gary McCutcheon netted his 15th goal of the season. He added a second shortly after the restart and Stephen Crainey and Mark Fotheringham helped themselves to one apiece before the end.

Hampden Joy For Scots

Scotland recorded their 3rd consecutive win in their World Cup qualifying campaign with a very satisfactory 2-0 defeat of Iceland in Glasgow last night. Charlie Miller got them on their way from the penalty spot after 15 minutes but they had to wait until the hour mark before Barry Ferguson scored the second to give them some breathing space. They now head the group and Berti Vogts was clearly delighted with the progress that his team are making.

Super-Mac Treble Kills Off County

Celtic super-striker Gary McCutcheon scored a hat trick in 12 frantic minutes at Parkhead yesterday to kill off any hope that Ross County may have harboured. He opened the scoring after 18 minutes, added the second 2 minutes later and completed his treble on the half hour. Kiegan Parker and Michael Stewart contributed further goals in the second half as Celtic ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.

Hearts Cruise To Cup Victory

First Division Hearts completed a comfortable 4-1 defeat of St. Johnstone in yesterday’s Challenge Cup Final with Scott Severin’s hat trick being the highlight of the day. Hoping to make an immediate return to the top flight after their shock relegation last season, Hearts brushed aside fellow promotion candidates to gain the first silverware of the season.

Celtic Euro Hopes Still Alive

A deflected shot from Kenny Miller 10 minutes from time kept Celtic’s Champions League campaign intact as they fought out a 1-1 draw at home to Nantes last night. The visitors took an early lead when Ariza Makukula socred with less that 5 minutes on the clock. Celtic worked hard to get back into the game but seemed to lack their usual attacking fluency. Their cause wasn’t helped by an excellent goalkeeping display from Nantes captain Mickael Landreau. With time running out Tick Jones made his last throw of the dice by removing captain Paul Lambert and introducing Miller as an extra attacker. This paid of within minutes of the change being made as the substitute finally beat Landreau thanks to a wicked deflection off the unfortunate Sylvain Armand. In the other game in this group Inter were kept scoreless at Olympiakos and stay top, two points clear of Celtic who remain one point clear of Nantes.
