Celtic Back On Track

Celtic shrugged off the disappointment of their opening day defeat by recording a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Inverness Caledonian. Jackie McNamara, Brian McAlister and Gary McCutcheon were all on target for the Celts and they could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty from Kiegan Parker. Only a solid performance between the sticks by Caley keeper Craig Nelson kept the score respectable as Inverness struggled to make any impression on a powerful Celtic team.

Good Night In Europe For Old Firm

Both Rangers and Celtic enjoyed good wins in their Champions League qualifiers as they seek to make it to the lucrative group stages. Rangers beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at Ibrox and will travel to Spain hopeful of holding on to their advantage. Celtic beat FX Matador Puchov 2-0 in Slovakia with Gary McCutcheon providing the goals and look likely to progress after such a good result.

Buddies Bold Win In Bulgaria

St. Mirren pulled off a terrific 2-1 win over CSKA Sofia in the Bulgarian capital last night thanks to goals from Burton O’Brien and Francis Duku. Gordon Strachan has revitalised the club since his arrival at the start of last year and this fine win gives his team a great chance of progressing into the UEFA Cup 2nd Round.

Dons Done In By Celtic Power

Aberdeen found visitors Celtic just too hot to handle at Pittodrie yesterday. Gary McCutcheon gave Celtic the lead after 14 minutes but Aberdeen’s Icelandic star Calum Bett found an equaliser just 4 minutes later. However, parity didn’t last long as McCutcheon scored his second of the game five minutes later. Mark Kerr wrapped up the points with a goal in the second half to give the visitors a well-deserved 3-1 win.

Miller On The Move

It was announced yesterday that Celtic’s Charlie Miller has agreed a £5M transfer to Bolton. The 28-year-old midfielder came to Celtic Park 4 years ago but last season he had been unable to command a regular starting place in the team and was keen on a move away.

Brown Dismissal Makes The Difference

Dundee keeper Mark Brown was sent off 25 minutes into their game at Celtic Park when he clipped the heels of Gary Teale. Replacement Derek Soutar couldn’t stop Paul Ritchie’s well-taken penalty but he spent the rest of the match repelling everything that the Celtic attack could throw at him. However the 1-0 win is enough to take Celtic to the top of the table as pacesetters Livingston fought out a 3-3 thriller at Dundee United.

Celtic Through But Rangers Just Lose Out

Celtic have reached the group stages of the Champions League after beating Puchov 2-0 at Celtic Park last night. Already 2-0 ahead from the first leg their task was made easier when the visitors had a man sent off after half an hour. Second half goals from Gary Teale and Gary McCutcheon eased them to a 4-0 aggregate win. It was a different story for Rangers in Bilbao however. They too were facing 10 men after the Spanish side had a player dismissed just 6 minutes into the game. Despite dominating play Rangers just couldn’t break through a stubborn defence and with 20 minutes remaining they were hit with a sucker punch when Athletic scored a breakaway goal to even the aggregate scores and progress on away goals. Rangers now drop into the UEFA Cup and Celtic have been drawn in Group H for the first phase games alongside Inter, Nantes and Olympiakos.

Love Street Draw Good Enough

A 1-1 draw at home to CSKA Sofia was good enough for St. Mirren to progress to the UEFA Cup 2nd Round. The visitors took an early lead to square the tie but still faced elimination on the away goals rule. But Francis Duku scored an equaliser just before half time and Gordon Strachan’s team were able to hold on for the aggregate win.

Mac The Knife Does It Again

A single Gary McCutcheon goal was enough to end Motherwell’s brave resistance at Fir Park and give Celtic a narrow 1-0 win. Home keeper Myles Hogarth looked to be in unbeatable form until McCutcheon finally got the better of him in the 81st minute. With 7 goals in 7 games it looks like the Celtic hitman is on track for another stellar season for the Hoops.

Scotland Off To A Flier

Scotland got their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign off to a flying start with a 3-0 win over Croatia at Hampden Park yesterday in one of the best performances of Berti Vogts troubled reign. An excellent team performance restricted the visitors attacking options and goals from captain Christian Dailly, Mark Burchill and Kevin Kyle capped off a wonderful afternoon.

Malta No Trouble For Berti’s Boys

Scotland recorded their second win in 4 days as they travelled back from Malta with a good 3-1 victory under their belts. Barry Ferguson opened the scoring after 17 minutes and Kevin Kyle added a second 5 minutes later. However the home side pulled a goal back before half time and when Gary Naysmith was shown a red card just before the interval a collapse was on the cards. But Kyle calmed the nerves with his second just after the restart and the team held on comfortably for the win.

Kerr Treble Sees Off Buddies

A superb hat trick from midfielder Mark Kerr was the centrepiece of an excellent 4-0 win over St. Mirren by Celtic at Parkhead. The 22-year-old was in unstoppable form and the visiting defence had no answer to his powerful and intelligent running. Goal machine Gary McCutcheon made it 7 goals in 7 games when he added the 4th near the end of the game.

No Slip Up In Greece For Celts

Two goals from Man of the Match Gary McCutcheon made sure that [b]Celtic came back from their potentially tricky trip to Olympiakos with a fine 2-1 win in the first Champions League group game. The home side were captained by former Celtic player Stilian Petrov but he got little joy from a determined Celtic midfield. McCutcheon opened the scoring in the 29th minute but the Greeks struck back almost immediately to equalise. But the Celtic striker scored again on 55 and the visitors held firm to take maximum points. In the other game in the group Inter had a narrow 1-0 win at home to Nantes.
