County Do It Again

Ross County pulled off a heroic 2-0 win over Rangers in their Scottish Cup Quarter Final replay at Victoria Park last night with goals from Jim Sherry and Martin Wood to continue their love affair with this competition. However the Semi Final draw has not been too kind as they will face Celtic whilst local rivals Dundee and Dundee United face off in the other game.

Rangers Come Close In Italy

Rangers played their 3rd match of a hectic week in Rome last night and suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat by Lazio in their UEFA Cup Quarter Final 1st Leg. Andy Cole opened the scoring for Rangers after half an hour but the home side managed to score twice in the second period and will take a one-goal advantage to Ibrox.

Two Down, One To Go

Celtic completed the second leg of the domestic treble with a narrow win over Dundee in the League Cup Final yesterday. Dundee provided a shock start to the game when Steven Milne scored after 12 minutes but Celtic hit back almost immediately as Gary McCutcheon equalised just two minutes later. The game then developed into a personal duel between McCutcheon and Mark Brown with Celtic’s prolific striker being denied time and again by the impressive young keeper. Dundee defended in depth and looked to hit Celtic on the break and as time ticked away it looked like their approach would at least take them to extra time. But two minutes into stoppage time Don Hutchison finally found a way past Brown to clinch a 2-1 victory. With the league title already secured Celtic are now two games away from a terrific treble.

No Joy For Pars At Parkhead

Despite playing what could be described as a Celtic reserve team at Parkhead last night Dunfermline could not profit and lost to the only goal of the game scored by Mark Fotheringham. There were a number of unfamiliar faces in the Celtic lineup as Tick Jones now seems to be using the remaining league fixtures to give his fringe players first team experience. Jamie Langfield had a solid game in goal and Eddie Forrest made a welcome return in central defence after his injury layoff. The midfield trio of Charlie Miller, Stephen Pearson and Fotheringham looked more than capable and Shaun Maloney played well as a withdrawn forward.

Rangers Make Euro Exit

Rangers bowed out of the UEFA Cup last night with a 2-1 defeat by visiting Lazio that made an aggregate score of 4-2 to the Italians. Rangers were always going to struggle when Lazio scored first a few minutes before half time. Barry Ferguson gave renewed hope with an equaliser 10 minutes after the restart but the visitors were just to strong and wrapped up the tie with a second goal a few minutes from the end.

Celtic Run Continues

Celtic completed their 25th consecutive league game without defeat and their 23rd consecutive victory with a 2-1 defeat of Livingston at Almondvale. The visitors dominated the game and goals from Mark Fotheringham and Kenny Miller put them in the driving seat. The home side scored a last minute consolation goal when Paul Sheerin converted a penalty but there was never any danger of Celtic not taking all three points.

Brave County Pay The Penalty

A fighting performance by a courageous Ross County team was undermined by two unfortunate penalty incidents in yesterday’s Scottish Cup Semi Final against Celtic. The first happened on the stroke of half time with the game still scoreless as County keeper Matt Boswell made contact with Gary Teale as the midfielder was going past him. Boswell was red-carded and Martin Wood was taken off to allow veteran replacement keeper Vince Bartram to come on. Paul Ritchie coolly converted the spot kick to give Celtic a scarcely deserved lead. This was without doubt the turning point in the game as County had acquitted themselves very capably up to that point. Worse was to follow when a second spot kick was awarded 10 minutes into the second half when Allan Grant was adjudged to have pushed Mark Kerr. Ritchie took responsibility again and had no problem in netting his second of the game to make the final score 2-0 to Celtic. The other Semi saw Dundee United overcome neighbours Dundee 2-0 at Easter Road.

Cameron Keeps Up Winning Ways

Colin Cameron scored the only goal of the game in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Motherwell at Celtic Park last night to ensure that his team’s winning streak is further extended. The home side dominated proceedings and Motherwell keeper Myles Hogarth pulled off a series of excellent saves before and after Cameron’s goal. The visitors showed very little in terms of creative play and failed to trouble Jamie Langfield in the Celtic goal.

Kerr On Target For Another Win

St. Mirren keeper Mike Franks performed miracles at Celtic Park yesterday to somehow repel everything that a determined Celtic team could throw at him. But Mark Kerr finally broke the deadlock with a ferocious 25-yarder to keep the Celtic run intact. Kilmarnock’s 1-0 defeat by Dundee means that Mick Harford’s team will be playing First Division football next season.
