So, I'm actually pretty crap at FM, coming back to the game to play FM05 after not playing since Champ Manager 2 (I know :s) and finding it way, way, way more difficult.
In 05 I wanted to start small at a club with low expectations so I could get a feel for the game and get a bit good before I worked my way up to major clubs. I ended up completely randomly picking to play as Gretna, in the Scottish division 3, who happen to have £5 million available to spend, shot straight up to the Premier league and build myself a reputation that, after a couple more successful club spells, got me the England job.
So, I was wondering if there are any clubs with a similar setup at the start of the game in FM08? 'Cause I'm even worse at 08 so need another easy start with a club clearly way too good to be in the lowly division they start in. Any suggestions?
If I was you, I would start with a real big club, style Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan…
Why?
•Well, in general the money will flow in. Use it to buy better players.
•You already have a team loaded with star players.
•It’s easy to convince other players, playing for your team.
•The training staff is in general, already excellent
•Tactics aren’t that important when you have 11 star players, in general they play always good, whatever the tactic is.
In a small team, you don’t have all those advantages.
IMHO, start with a real big team, when you master that, go for a lesser god like Newcastle, Atletico Madrid, Paris St Germain, Lazio…
When you can handle that one, go for first league relegation candidates.
And then you’re ready for almost every team.
FM isn’t that hard. I would recommend reading the forum pages and manuals as the one from Marc Vaughan
Problem is, those teams are easy to play with and be good with them , but the board demands excellence. You can't really underperform and slip in your chasing of their set goals, or you're fired and the enjoyment of a long-term game is ruined.
To the OP, I would recommend Watford. They have a very good team already, they get 9 mil Euros to spend and the board and media only predict a finish of 6th, so even if you don't get promoted it's no big deal.
I a game I tried with the Hornets, the board had a FOUR year plan to win the Championship, hehe. That's probably one of teh most achievable goals in FM08.
Yeah, the problem with big clubs is, as I said, I'm not very good at the game so while I might do well with them, I won't do well enough. In my old games I've basically become known for over performing at clubs expected to do badly but never to the extent of actually winning much :s
getafe, udinese, nottingham forest and teams like that i find fun to play fm with.
game is not fun with top clubs with packed arenas every game and loads of good players in rooster at start. more fun play mid club and try make it succesfull.
The Brighton game I'm into right now is one of the most fun I have ever had on CM/FM. The economy is horrible but it eases up after a couple of seasons. The team is young and can grow with the job. Played more than half the original 11 for several seasons.
Not sure how low down the ladder you want to start at, but Oxford United in the Blue Square Premier (is that what it's called now?) offer a fairly easy start. They're a big club - a very big club - at that level. They have a large fanbase and are reasonably well-off.
Playing with N. Forest now and it's more enjoyable than managing a Premiership club. My club policy is to give young players a chance to develop from the lower leagues on. It's fantastic with every wonderkid that comes thru the youth system!
Despite the 15 point reduction, Leeds is quite a good place to start. You get a good squad (for league one), reasonable expectations and money to spend.
My usual tactic to get me into new fm games is to start at FC basle in the swiss league. High expectations but loads of money, worthless opposition and always in europe to boost your rep. Then after a few years their is always plenty of oppurtunity to jump to decent premier league jobs
