Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Defensively minded, deep defensive line, tight marking AND STILL they lose their man from a ball over the top

Why's this then?

Closing down is on too, yet I've just watched my idiot left back standing about 10 yards off his man, who was put in over the top, and had time to cut inside to score.

Deep defensive line, and an overall defensive mentality - yet my four defenders are a good 40 yards up the pitch.

Defensive line only comes into effect when you are not in possession, so basically, even a deep defensive line can be caught out by losing the ball and having a quick one played over the top. Also i doubt the defenders would tight mark the opposition when you are in possession so this would again make you vulnerable to a quick ball over the top. Another thing Ive noticed with 08 more then 07 is that a lot of the time when the defenders get beat, they stay beat. The closing down wouldnt really come into it unless they had a big build up to this attack which since its a ball over the rop i doubt.

By the sounds of it anyway it seems to me that the oppositions first pass after you lost the ball was probably this one over the top. Am i right?

Yeah, it's a quick ball over the top, out of nothing. (Like 3 of Everton's goals against Blunderland the other day!)

But it's winger and strikers getting easily in behind which bugs me. I've told those defenders a million times - stay back, be defensive, don't go rushing in - but I still concede that way.

I dont really know how to fix that or whether it can be fixed tbh, everybody gets caught on the counter every now and then so I suppose it is to be expected.

Why do my fullbacks keep going forward, when I tell them not to?

Why don't my wingers both back them up?

Why do my centre backs have the inability to keep their eye on a man two yards from them?

Why do my defenders hoon the ball up field and give it away despite being told to play it short to feet - and the fact the team is quite compact so he has plenty of choice of team mates around him?

Why does back backline get breached over and over and by being too high, and too stupid, and keep allowing the man they should be marking to get about 15 yards away from him?

I'm not one to go whinging, it's good the game is a challenge, but it's getting the point where everything that goes wrong is uncorrectable.

Every thing I change - we still play the same!

Tight marking - they lost their man. Non tight marking - they lose their man.

Man marking - they go all over the place. Zonal marking - they go all over the place, and won't stay in position.

Tight width and a lower mentality with closing down - get opened up by by basic passing. Lots of width, lots of attacking - get opened up.

Do the sliders ACTUALLY do anything?

My defenders set to close down, they get no where near the ball. A lower CD setting - they're still useless and run about like a headless chicken and we concede.

Why does my fullback bomb forward? He's got low mentality, low creativity, no forward runs, no run with ball. Yet he still heads well into their half, or hovers around the half way line just waiting to be lobbed with a pass and for the opposition to get in behind.

This is the first time I've ever whinged, but it's getting right on my nerves. I love the game, I'm enjoying a bit of success but now I'm starting to really hate it.

Why do the defenders lose their man so bloody easily?! Even with a DMC to back them up.

Sigh . . .
