Zonal marking, man marking? Both useless. My back four holds hands allowing wingers to get in behind. Try wide width, try narrow width. No difference.
Man marking? They get dragged all over the shop. Zonal marking? They just run about, commit themselves (on easy OR normal tackling. Or a bit of closing down, or a lot of closing down) and still get dragged around.
The opposition pass they way through with ease. Narrow? Yes, they still manage it. Lots of closing down? Yes, they still manage it. No closing down. They manage it.
Do my wingers help out my fullbacks (who bomb forward, despite being told not to)? No, they don't.
I'm all for a tactical discussion, but it's becoming increasingly difficult when it appears none of the sliders work.
I tell my fullbacks to play it short - they hoof it long, despite having people around them. What's worse is they have an inability to play a ball further than about 30 yards.
My midfielders don't close down. Do I tell them to? Yes, yes I do.
My back four stays up the pitch, whether I tell it to or not.
In my current game, I keep drawing. I've drawn 50 out of 140 games. It wouldn't bother me if were sturdy at the back, but we're not. It's giving my nightmares - the vision of my centre backs charging toward the opponent (whether I tell him to or not) knowing full well he'll let his markee fly by him with ease.
Basic premises don't work. Being a compact block, closing down, and having a deep line to hold on to a lead for the last few minutes doesn't work. Nothing changes. The team just runs about like twats.
Keeping everyone zonal, and nicely spaced and compact should see the team defend as a two solid lines. It doesn't.
Sadly, I'm getting really bored now. 140 games in and still nothing makes sense. What happens on the pitch bares no relation to the tactical options.
If I see my full back in the final third despite having him on the most defensive settings again, I'll punch a hamster. This kind of stupid thing is what is making the game annoying and futile.

Why don't tactics really work on FM 08 then? Post #2
He likes to lose the ball a lot (despite having a very basic game plan) and to not close down or help the defence out anyone who's more than three yards away (despite being told to close down all over.

This is actually the first game in the series that i don't get addicted to. I have played since the first release... It's too micro-management. The game is gone, and a great simulation has been born. The best. Personally i miss the game!
Many people like micro-management and I respect that a lot, but I also think there is a huge amount of people who would like to just set up a tactic that actually works, buy young talents or world stars and if you do that right you win. Now it's impossible to make regens develop(my be a bug), and it's difficult to come up with a tactic you can use year after year. I miss that, but I also accept that many disagree with me.
Maybe SI will tweak some of this in the next patch, maybe not. I cross my fingers!

I've replayed this one game over 20 times. The other team (Udinese) are playing a 4-3-3 with the one lone striker against my 4-3-3, which is pretty much identical to theirs. No matter what type of marking I use, he manages to get about 90% of his shots on goal AND always manages to score. If I use just the 1 centre-back, the lone striker is unable to score. This makes absolutely no sense? I would presume 2 centre-backs would have an easier job marking than just the 1?
Trying out wwfan's 4-5-1 also sees this lone striker score all every game.
