Rob Fitzgerald's Aston Villa match reports: *2

Aston Villa vs Wigan: 3rd game in charge, Attendance: 34,820 – WON 1-0

After the tonking from Arsenal, it was back to basics this week, with heavy focus on set pieces, shooting and tactics.

I’m still getting to know the players, and they’re getting to know me.
Important that we dust ourselves down and beat this physical Wigan side.
It won’t be pretty...

Luke Moore – 34 mins 1-0

Started brightly, Moore scored a very well taken goal and we had an active and pacy look about ourselves.
Second half was a different story, we seemed to be content with the one goal lead and Wigan were coming into it bit by bit.
Our keeper had to get us out of trouble and to be honest I was happy for the final whistle.
We’ll take the win.

Aston Villa vs Bolton (3rd Round LC): 4th game in charge, Attendance: 36,373 – LOST 2-1

Another home game, and another strong, physical side to face.
Laursen failed a late fitness test, but Edman may well be coming back, but I’ll see how he is nearer kick-off.
A confident club enjoys a good Cup run, the fans enjoy it and the Chairman does too.
I’ll be playing my best side, I’ll need to.

Gabriel Agbonlahor -16 mins 1-0
Nicolas Anelka – 69 mins 1-1
El-Hadji Diouf – 90 mins 1-2

Cruel game football, some games need a strong referee and we didn’t get one.
Fair play to Bolton, they played as strongly as the referee allowed them, and perhaps the players were waiting for extra-time, up pounced Diouf to knock us out in the last minute of a Cup that I felt we could have done well in.

Blackburn Rovers vs Aston Villa: 5th game in charge, Attendance: 23,814 – LOST 2-1

Another North-West side now in the shape of Blackburn Rovers.
Blackburn are a good outfit and well drilled, we will need to match them in all areas of the pitch, few players with niggling injuries, the Physio is pretty busy at the moment.
Might need to change this around, freshen things up, we’ve had a few tough games in a week and a few players need a rest.

Roque Santa-Cruz, 1-0 27 mins
Benni McCarthy, 2-0 31 mins
Ashley Young, 2-1 44 mins

A crazy 5 min spell in the 1st half put paid to getting a result here.
My players need to concentrate through the whole match, not in spells.
That’s twice in two consecutive games this has happened!

Manager Comments
A great week all in all except for the defeat in the League Cup by Man Utd on Penalties. Chelsea are well on course on regaining the premiership title and our European adventure is going well as well. Next month is going to be interesting as I have had to give Shevchenko leave as he is home sick. Plus I am on holiday next week so I hope my assistant can handle the reigns as good as I have done.

The session started before I could get online so my assistant manager led Middlesbrough to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Portsmouth. His job is looking very shaky now and I'm actively looking for a new assistant. Next up was the league cup. A tricky away tie at St. James Park. Arca opened the scoring for us with the rebound from his own saved penalty early in the game but Newcastle hit back just before half-time and despite withstanding a lot of pressure from the home side in the second half, ninety minutes finished 1-1. James McFadden my biggest pre-season signing at £2m repayed my faith in him by hitting an extra time winner. Middlesbrough now have a home tie against Watford in the last 16. Back to league duty and our poor form returns as Middlesbrough go down 1-0 to West Ham at Upton Park, leaving us propping up the table with one win and seven defeats from the early league encounters. Must do better.

Reading Report

Session Date: 22nd November 2007

Results

Premiership

Reading - Man City 1-2

This was my first game as Manager of Reading. It was very frustrating because I led the game until my goalkeeper made a huge mistake (1-1). Man City scored their second goal at the 93rd min.

League Cup 3rd Round

Reading - Blackpool 3-0
We could have scored even more goals. Blackpool never had a chance.

Premiership

Fulham - Reading 0-0

Frustrating because I should have won there.

Premiership

Reading - Arsenal 1-2

The game should have ended up with a draw. But as unlucky as I am, again my opponent scored a goal in the 95th minute... No comments...

Comments after my first session with Reading:

It was frustrating to loose in such a such way against Man City and Arsenal. I should have won against Fulham. My victory against Blackpool is just normal. I am unhappy with my performance: 1 victory, 1 draw and 2 defeats. But there is some hope as I didn't deserve to loose against strong teams like Man City and Arsenal.

Blackburn Report

Session Dates: 20th November 2007 & 22nd November 2007

My first session back at RTG after a long time of abstinence...and it felt good again!

Took over Blackburn on 19th position with two points after three games in the premiership (bad), with 9 (Morten Gamst Pedersen, Steven Reid, Benni McCarthy, Aaron Mokoena, Maceo Rigters, Andre Ooijer, Jason Brown, Bruno Berner and Stephane Henchoz) players out injured (worse) and the whole transfer budget already spent on David Bentley (worst).
I thought "What the f..."!

But it went ok in the first games...

PL Tottenham - Blackburn 3:2
Good start in the game with Tugay (28) and Santa Cruz (33) scoring and Tottenham without a single shot on goal for the first 34 minutes.
But then Berbatov scored two in five minutes (35 & 40) to equalize and finally Bent turned the match after 89 minutes for a totally undeserved Tottenham win (I should have won by miles with twice the shots and lot more posession).

PL Blackburn - Fulham
Not a big game, and almost no chances to score for either team.
Derbyshire scored (60) for Blackburn to take three points.

League Cup 3rd Round West Brom - Blackburn 2:4 a.P.
West Brom was giving Blackburn a runaround for the entire match with Gera scoring after 35 minutes.
A lucky goal by Nelson (87) after a corner and the game went to extra time.
Nothing happened and Brad Friedel saved 3 penalties to get us in the next round.

PL Blackburn - Wigan 1:1
Another boring home game and only a point for unlucky Blackburn.
Santa Cruz with the lead (62) and Papac with the equalizer (80).

UEFA 1 Round Zaglebie Lubin - Blackburn 0:0
Good game from Blackburn but they forgot to score...but a good result for the second leg at Ewood Park to reach the group stage.

PL Bolton - Blackburn 2:0
Early goal from Diouf (7), a missed penalty from Savage (31) and the fine goal from Wilhelmsson (54) and Blackburn got nothing in a game they deserved nothing.

PL Blackburn - Aston Villa 2:1
In an even first half Santa Cruz (27) and McCarthy (31) scored for Blackburn, and Young (44) with the goal for Aston Villa.
Nothing more happened in an even game and my second win in the Premiership.

UEFA 1 Round Blackburn - Zaglebie Lubin 2:0
Total domination by Blackburn in the first half, a red card for Lubins Burkhardt (49), but it atill lasted 71 minutes for Blackburn to celebrate the UEFA Group Stage.
Again Santa Cruz (65) and Samba (71) with the goals.

16th in the Premiership with 9 points and a game in hand, 4th round in the League Cup (vs Arsenal, the last really good team in the competition) and qualified for the group stage in the UEFA Cup.
Exept of Brown and Ooijer (again injured!) are all players fit and on a good run. Next games away at Birmingham and at home against Liverpool.
Trying to step up place by place in the next session...

Reading Report

Session Date: November 29, 2007

Results

Premiership

Wigan - Reading 0-0

Both teams played bad. The draw is a logical conclusion.

Premiership

Reading - Aston Villa 2-0

We dominated most of the game. Deserved victory.

League cup

Walsall – Reading 1-0

Terrible!!! We dominated most of the games and had so many chances to score! Walsall scored on their only chance. Total nightmare!!!

Prmiership

Liverpool – Reading 3-2

We were leading for 0-2 after less than 10 mins. Liverpool came back in the game and dominated most of the game. They came back at 2-2, a Liverpool penalty was greatly saved by our keeper, but Liverpool scored again. It was 3-2. At the 92nd minute, we scored the equalizer!!! But the goal was disallowed for a doubtfoul offside... We deserved the draw for the fighting spirit we showed whole game long.

Comments after this Thursday Session:

I remain positive overall even if my session stats are negative: 1 victory, 1 draw, 2 losses
The loss at Anfield was undeserved, we show everyone we were able to beat them. The other loss is just pure bad luck.
