First of all, have a look around and make sure that someone hasn't already started a challenge that is similar to your idea, it is nice to have a wide variety of challenges open for people to take part in.

Test it yourself, it is well worth simulating the first few years to make sure that the challenge you are setting actually works, it helps if you have prior knowledge of the potential problems people might have with their games. Take into consideration things like promoted clubs, foreign player rules etc.

Make sure the aims are clear, whether that be a points system or a number of goals, make sure people are clear what they are aiming for.

Make it clear how people should set up their game. If there are different possibilities, then give examples of the possible setups that will work for your challenge. A screenshot like this can be an easy way of doing this.

When setting your rules, try to think of every possible question that could be asked. The more you can cover in the opening post, the less questioning you will get during the thread. There are always going to be grey areas, so be prepared to be the judge on what is acceptable and what isn't.

Think about what information you do and don't want people to share in the thread, things like player naming could either help or hinder the challenge, depending on how you want to run it.

If you want to check things before people start, ask for some kind of initial screenshot to start the challenge, this can be used to check that the initial setup has been used. A profile like this could do the job.

State what you expect of the people taking part in the challenge, whether that be monthly/yearly updates and what detail you want them to go into. Obviously, this should relate to your rules, for example if you have player signing restrictions it might be worth asking for a screenshot of the transfer history page for the season.

Take part in it, it doesn't set a very good example if you set up a challenge then don't bother attempting to complete it yourself.

Taking Part in a Challenge

Respect the wishes of the starter of the challenge, what they say goes.

Don't cheat, these challenges have proved to have a great community spirit, cheaters detract from the good atmosphere.

Make sure you read the opening post very carefully, often questions that have been asked have already been answered in the opening post.

Make sure you provide whatever information is asked for as a minimum, this is likely to be a screenshot to announce your start to the challenge followed my regular updates to review your progress.

Think about what is worth updating people about, don't just post everything that happens in your game, think about what you think people would genuinely be interested in.

Keep things on topic, these challenge threads have got a good reputation for being spam free, let's keep things that way.

Enjoy it, that's the whole point.
