Orkney Islands vs Shetland Islands Pre-Season Friendly - 10.7.2006
Shetland improved greatly in their second game against Orkney, and deserved to win.
Shetland got up to another strong start, with
Howells blasting over after just a minute gone. Bulter then had a shot well wide for Orkney. Shetlands more attacking and offensice style this game let to
Majidinho getting a boooking.
Howells then had another shot blocked, as Shetlands turned up the tempo.
Against the run of play, Orkney gained the lead. With Andrews slipping in behind to score.
Not much else happened in the half, but Shetlands were rueing missed opportunities as they went in behind.
HT score: Orkney Islands 0-1 Shetland Islands
As the second half began, Shetlands went for it, and after just 47 mins
Petrov's long range attempt was saved. McKauf then showed why he was important for Orkney, hitting the crossbar from 8 yards. But Shetlands defence was more resilient this time.
Finally Shetlands got their break, and
Drewe's corner was met by
Pethybridge, who powered his header home. Incidentally, Pethybridge was the only player to remain in the side after the last Orkney game, so the manager's faith in him was rewarded.
Nelson had a late whipped free-kick saved, and in stoppage time Orkney keeper Lewis had to claw away a dangerous Shetland cross, and
Drewe hit the rebound wide.
Well it was a much more improved performance today, and I felt we did enough to win it. The change in XI and tactics certainly helped, and there were even some 7s in our first team this time.
My MoM is Rhys Howells, who made good movement in the first half before coming off with a knock in the second half. He really should have got a goal, but I was pleased enough with his contribution. Drewe also put in a solid performance, and Majidinho was much improved after his poor game against Cove Rangers.
I think Josh has posted the screenies, if not he should do so tommorow, but if none are up in an hour I'll do them
