Cove Rangers 5 - 5 Shetland Islands Pre-Season Friendly - 30.6.06
Shetland's first ever game got off to an explosive side as they shared a 5-5 draw with feeder club Cove Rangers.
Things had been looking too good to be true for the Shetland Islands, when on just 30 seconds,
Scott McLeod robbed the Cove LB of the ball just outside the box, ran in and slotted home at the near post. The lead was doubled on 3 minutes when a
David Collins cross was fired in towards
Salman Al-Dahash, and with a big deflection and a bit of luck the left winger found the net to double Shetland's lead. Shetland's were in ecstacy on 7 minutes, when
Rhys Howells skillfully beat 3 men before lofting the ball back into the centre, and
Matthew Fairgrieve was on hand to finish from close range and put Shetland's in a comfortable 3-0 lead.
The early scoring continued though, when
Majidinho couldn't cope with Cove striker Beattie, who beat him for pace and scored to make it 3-1. On 35 minutes,
Acid Monkey failed to claim a corner, leading to Haswell firing in from the edge of the box to bring it back to 3-2.
A poor
Majidinho clearance gave the chance for a long ball over the top from Cove, and both
Chapman and
Tarray were beaten by the ball, and Beattie ran on to make it 3-3 and an astonishing comeback. However, Shetlands regained their lead before half-time on 44 mins, when
de Shetlandinho's through ball found
Howells, who's cheeky lofted ball found
McLeod at the back post to bundle in to make the score 4-3.
HT Score: Cove Rangers 3-4 Shetland Islands
On 53 mins, Shetlands again increased their lead, when substitute
McChunder whipped in a cross from the left, for
Maradona to control and poke home from close range and to make the score 5-3.
Cove got another goal back when
McTrucker's tackled clearance fell as far as Haswell, who got his 2nd and made it 5-4.
McTrucker summed up his poor day on 90 mins, when his rushed clearance only went to Haswell on the edge of the six yard box, with
Crouch given no chance, and a win taken away from Shetlands.
Overall, I think we really should have won this game because of how we went 3-0 up in such an emphatic style, but a draw is still a good result in our first ever game
My MoM is Scott McLeod  2 well taken goals and good movement up the wings.
