Currently they are both non-league clubs.

2009-10 Recap

Serie A

Another new scudetto winner, this time Akragas took the title by seven points over Ronchi. Akragas started in Serie B in 07-08, so a pretty quick jump to champions. And equally impressive, Ronchi started in C1/B, and after two consecutive promotions will head to the Champions League. Also headed to the CL is Villese.

Pievecella, Forte dei Marmi and AM Goricizza make up the relegated trio.

Leading scorer in Serie A for the season was Roberto Nurse of Akragas, who had 22 on the season. Nurse joined the Italian club on a $2.5 million transfer from Atlas in Mexico.

Serie B

Succivo are Serie B champions, winning the league by only one point over Lucrezia. Joining those two in Serie A next season will be Virtus Castelfranco.

Lower Leagues

Not surprsingly, Fiorentina are headed to Serie B after a three point division win over Parma. Also making the jump as C1/B winners are Catania, who lost only one match all season.

Parma and Lecce also jump to Serie B thanks to playoff wins.

In C2 world, Torino smashed through the season without a loss, and a twenty point lead on the rest of the field will see them head to C1 next season.

Coppa Italia

Petacciato were looking for their second consecutive Coppa Italia, but were edged out by Villese in the final, thanks to a goal in the 112th minute.

Petacciato also took the loss in the season opening SuperCoppa, at the hands of Arenzano.

European Competition

Still no long runs for Italian clubs in Europe. Pomigliano and Akragas both crashed out of the Champions League in the 3rd qualifying round. Arenzano and Petacciato went no further than the group stage. Arenzano had the best season in the CL of the Italian clubs, with a win and three draws in group play.

The UEFA Cup wasn't much better. Calangianus, Villese, Pomigliano and Quinto were all eliminated in the first round. Akragas managed to make it past the first round, but were unable to make it past the group stage.

National Team

Italy's World Cup squad is made up of 14 players playing abroad, the same number as the Euro 2008 squad. One player from a new league team has broken through. Gabriele Paonessa got one cap through the season, and is included in the World Cup squad. Paonessa plays for Arenzano, who he joined on a free transfer in July of 2008.

Another big drop in coefficients for Italy, dropping to 9th in Europe, with 2 CL spots, 2 UEFA Cup and 1 Inter-Toto. 39.651 for the coefficient.

In a repeat of the 2006 World Cup final, Italy and France played in a goal filled match, with France taking the title 4-3, thanks to a 90th minute goal from Thierry Henry.

Very interesting stuff here. Would be interested to see how the transfers went in that first season. Not of lot of money for the lower clubs, so they must have had to sign the entire free transfer roster.

Yeah, all free transfers for sure.

Just looking at the top three Serie A clubs for the first year...

Petacciato - mentioned earlier, brought in a ton of players, all on free's.

Quinto - only brought in 20 players, but all on free transfers.

Villese - over 50 players, probably closer to 100, all on free.

Non-league obscurity.

Should have an update on the 2010-11 season shortly.

2010-11 Recap

Serie A

Almost seems as if no one wanted to win the scudetto this year. No club won more than 20 matches. Pomigliano took the title, three points ahead of Arenzano.

Acilia, Vallagarina and Montenero will be playing in Serie B in 11-12.

Leading scorer for the season was Anderson Cueto of Arzanese. The Peruvian had 23 goals for a 14th place club.

Serie B

A couple of the big teams will make their return to Serie A. Parma won Serie B, with a 6-point edge over Fiorentina. Catania and Lecce both were playoff teams for promotion, but the final promotion spot went to Urbisaglia.

Lower Leagues

Torino are the next big guys looking to make the jump to Serie A, and are one step closer. They won C1/A by 14 points. Spezia also will make the jump to Serie B.

Coppa Italia

Arenzano captured the Coppa this year with a 2-1 win over Corsico.

Akragas took the season opening SuperCoppa with a win over Villese.

Along with their league win, Torino added the C1 Super Cup and Coppa Italia Serie C to their trophy case.

European Competition

There was one bright spot in Europe, but that's about it. In Champions League play, Villese failed to make it out of the 3rd qualifying round. Ronchi and Akragas were unable to get passed the group stage. Akragas had a decent campaign in the group stage, with 2 wins and 2 draws.

In the UEFA Cup, Petacciato, Pomigliano and Corsico all crashed out in the first round. Villese made it to the group stage, but went without a point in their group.

The bright spot was Akragas, who made it to the quarter-final of the UEFA Cup, where they were eliminated by the eventual champions, Dortmund.

National Team

The Azzurri are cruising through Euro 2012 qualifying, unbeaten through 8 matches without allowing a goal. Donadoni, still the coach, is counting on more and more players from outside Italy, with 17 on the latest squad.

Of the "new" teams, Akragas have two players who've made the jump the national team.

Screen shots of current squads...

Inter
Juve
Lazio - no one really major cut off from the screen.
Milan - Dida and Abbiati cut off the screen.
Roma - Curci, Doni, Mexes, Andreolli among those cut off from the screen.

Italy has fallen to 15th in European coefficients, but haven't lost any more spots in the competitions. Now behind countries like Greece, Ukraine, Romania, Denmark and Belgium.
