AFC Hornchurch - Blue Square South - End Of Second Season (2009/10)
Total relief for me now that I eventually got offered a
new contract, when the end of March passed and there was no sign of one and the board refused to consider offering me a new deal when I requested it, I was expecting the worst. I'm so glad that the contract got extended though as I'm really starting to enjoy this game now - even though my second season was worse than the first.
I made what I considered to be some excellent
transfers this season, our performances seemed to drop considerably for a
squad of our standard and we never really got going. We eventually finished
12th after some terrible
form towards the end of the season. The
board and fans seem to be pretty happy though, despite finishing 2 places lower than in last seasons campaign.
A major positive for next season is that for the first time in my time in charge, we will actually have some money to play with. I have kept under my overall
wage budget in both seasons, and not spent a penny in the transfer market yet, which has seen my balance increase to safely over £100,000 now. This will be greatly increase next season as
the huge transfer deal of Mickey Stewart will bring in £250,000 guaranteed over the next 12 months, and then potentially more if they sell the player on. Having found him as a 17 year old on a free and seeing him play so well, I wanted to keep him so negotiated Oldham up from their £50k offer, hoping they would pull out, however they agreed the deal was worth while and the board accepted it over my head. I am also starting to get interest from Northwich for
Anthony Parker who was my other very good signing from last summer. I am going down a similar route of trying to negotiate a transfer to over £250,000 so that I either get alot of money or get to keep him for another season, so far, Northwich have refused to meet my demands saying the deal isn't value for money. The player isn't unhappy yet though so this is fine with me - as he has been my best performer this year with an average rating of 7.11
Hopefully with a bit of extra money for the summer, we might actually manage to challenge for the playoffs next season - but I thought we had enough to do that this time around so I'm not counting my chickens yet, though I do fancy our chances.
