An excellent performance from MOM BvR gone to waste by a terrible game from Juve keeper Rene Seegers. Complete failure of Juventus to try and win this game and the cup. Inter dominated and should have had a more comfortable aggregate win. Only two chances for Juventus in the game, and one of those was a wild overhead kick from BvR that nearly killed a linesman.

The season that was: (selected exerpts):

Few would have expected that Roma would have been able to make up the gap that Napoli has extended on them in the first 13 games of the season, but that is exactly what they did over the last 21 games of the season. Roma, led by midfielder Maximo Janz who had joined the club in the summer, Roma jumped to the top of the table, and despite struggling down the stretch, did just enough to hold off Milan.

What makes this even more impressive is the blockbuster move of their captain and leading goalscorer BvR to rival club Juventus. Lacking BvR's almost guaranteed goal every game, Roma found a way to succeed anyways...

And so we come to Juventus, as the old lady of Turin once again disappointed. Sitting in 8th place after 13 games, the arrival of striker BvR should have helped the club climb further up the table, but they could only manage moving up to 6th. In European competition, BvR's late arrival (or the club's failure to register him) meant Juventus was severely lacking in goalscorers and they went out to Serie A Rivals in the latter rounds of the UEFA Cup...

As to BvR, it is a bit strange to discuss a player who leads Serie A in goals despite having switched midseason, as having a dissappointing year, but that is what we must say. The striker generally performed well, but was shut-down in Juventus' most important games, and rarely showed good form on the road.

BvR will have to show more in his future career at Juventus for us to know whether the purchase was worth it...

Epilogue:

In the summer of 2017, long-time Roma manager Alberto Zaccheroni retired after Roma's successful Serie A title. The first thing that new manager Claudio Guerra did was sign a striker: BvR.

After just half a season with Juventus, BvR left the club for 12 million dollars (a tidy 10 million dollar profit for Roma). BvR had been named Foreign Player of the Year for Serie A, and had finished 3rd in the World Footballer award.

In the 2017/2018 season that followed with Roma, BvR scored 25 goals in all competitions as Roma finished 3rd in Serie A well behind an AC Milan side that cruised to an early title.

In what can only be described as 'expected' based on his past history, BvR came off the Roma bench in the 2nd half of the Champions Cup Final against Napoli with the score tied at 1-1. The 33-year-old BvR scored withing 5 minutes of coming into the game to give Roma a 2-1 lead and ultimately the win. This was BvR's 5th Champions Cup medal.
