Anders Hemming arrived at his office roughly at noon on Sunday, August 5th. After sitting down at his desk, and leaning back comfortable he pressed the intercom button and shouted: "Mr. Anderson and Mr. Stroh to my office please."
The two coaches reached the office at the same time and hesitantly went in.
"Ah, there you two are... As you can see I've just arrived. I was delayed in the US. Something came up in LA, and I had to go out to the coast to fix it. Have you two ever heard of a company named Enron? No... well no matter. Catch me up to speed on what's been going on... Obviously, I've gotten the basics from the phone messages, so give me the details."
Stroh looked at Anderson, and the latter shrugged and said: "Well, we have our first league game in about an hour..."
"Ah. Excellent. So we have some time to discuss things. Good. Continue."
Stroh coughed, and took up the conversation over Anderson's stunned silence: "Well, sir, as you know we were finally able to negotiate with Arnar Sverrison, and he's joined the club. We both expect he'll be a starter, though we don't think he'll improve much."
"Contract?"
"Well, actually only... lemme think... it works out to about 120 dollars a week, with assist bonuses."
"Not bad, well done gentlemen."
"Er... thank you sir. And we were able to get Christian Peterson on loan from Randers Freja. He'll probably start in our defensive line. Four of our older players have left the club on transfers..."
Mr. Hemming interrupted, "Ah, on that point I have some news for you. The income from those transactions, roughly 160 thousand dollars, was unfortunately, not quite enough for us to make enough to give us any transfer budget. Perhaps..." Hemming's cell phone began to ring, "excuse me, I have to take this.... Hello?... Yes, this is he.... I see.... So there is absolutely none in red available? Very well, I'll consider a black... yes... yes... well, tell you what, even if it is a little more I'll take it.... extra features?.... Why don't we go through the list... Power windows? Of course... Leather seats? Of course... Heated Seats? Yes...
(15 minutes later)
Self-re-inflating tires with teflon sides? That sound good.... Hmmmm.... I suppose you just might as well add them all, and if I don't like them, I'll have you remove them later... Yes, I understand it is difficult to get replacements from the Italian manufacturer.... very well." Hemming turns is phone off.
"Where was I? Ah yes, unfortunately, the income wasn't enough for us to make any transfers. The board and I felt that the money could be used better elsewhere. It might be better to try and wait a bit before trying to really invest an any players for a fee.... Which takes me to our scouts."
Anderson cleared his throat. "Well, unfortunately the best prospect we've heard of so far, one uh... Carlos Alvarez, a versatile Uruguayan midfielder, was snapped up by America of Brazil. We are considering offering a contract to a 18-year old Russian midfielder. He's not that promising, but an extra body might be useful."
"Yes, yes. Well, see how cheaply we can get him, otherwise don't bother. Anything else?"
"Yes," said Stroh, "we've been drawn against Olstykke FC in the 1st Round of the Cup." He continued after a blank stare from Hemming, "Uh... they are in our division"
"Ah. Anything else?"
Stroh and Anderson exchanged looks briefly and Stroh began: "Well, sir. You haven't exactly been the most available of managers. The players are beginning to wonder if you'll be coming to any practice sessions or tactical meetings..."
"Ah. Mr. Stroh, and Mr. Anderson... I'm not that," here Mr. Hemming made those 'finger quote' signs in the air, "kind of manager. If I was that," again finger signs, "kind of manager, I wouldn't need you," again finger signs, "would I?... Now then, I understand we have a game to watch?"

Skjold coaches Jan Anderson and Ove Stroh sat in their 'office' (by which of course we mean the entrace corridor of the 'clubhouse' (by which of course we mean the rather small building near the club's practice field)) having just gotten of the speaker phone with their manager Mr. Hemming. (Mr. Hemming having called after the first game of the season from his 'office' (by which of course we mean the newly finished and furnished penthouse suite of a downtown Copenhagen high-rise, complete with pull-out day bed, shower, mini-bar, and wireless stereo system.)
Mr. Stroh: "Well... to be honest, that went better than I expected out there today."
Anderson poured himself another glass from a quickly diminishing bottle: "Can't argue with that."
"Young Mr. Schmidt got those two goals for us early and we did, if not particularly well, average, in holding off Hjorring from coming back for a win. A point is a point."
"I hate to admit it, but Mr. Hemming may have a half-decent design for a tactic. Those two goals were created because Hjorring couldn't seem to mark up Rasmus, and he converted pretty easily.... I'm fairly concerned about our midfield though. Skjold-Hansen and Oleson looked lost out there."
Stroh, draining his glass: "Agreed."
"I'm also a little worried about what the local paper will say after that embarassment at the start of the game....
'Manager sacks loaner defender minutes before game'
... I felt bad for poor Peterson, now he has to go back to Randers Freja without any game time."
"25-years old. I guess we missed that somehow, eh?"

Rep Power: 0 | We'll meet again, don't know where don't know when...
Anders Hemming, Ove Stroh, and Jan Anderson sat in Hemming's office going over their notes of the last 2 weeks.
Hemming: "... and Kasper Sand went to Hvidovre, who thankfully paid about 5 times what we thought he'd be worth. I had to take part in that negotiation myself. Several other players have been targeted, especially since I've listed them as free transfers, but we haven't been able to negotiate their moves as of yet. Mr. Anderson, remind us of our signings."
Anderson nodded: "We've had two, as you both know. Neither is expected to amount to much, but they should be useful in the short term. Dennis Schmidt is a 17 year-old utilty midfielder. He's hard working and is already one of our strongest players, in terms of muscle, though he's not particularly skilled. Vyacheslav Djioev is the Russian midfielder we've discussed before. A decent body to help cover the defensive holding position in our tactic."
Hemming: "And any word from the scouts on any others?"
Anderson: "No. Sadly. Each has finished their first tours with limited success. However, all three have gone back out based on your instruction.... Let me see... yes, Johansen is still going to look for youth players locally. Kastrup has been given Scandinavia and Hermansen the continent."
Hemming: "Mr. Stroh, give us your summation of our recent games."
Stroh, sighs, and begins: "Well, we've all been there to see... but against Naesby, we had a very good day overall. Rasmus Schmidt scored a hattrick... header, right foot, header... as we particularly outplayed our opponents. Loaner defender Benny Thomsen was very good in the back, and Stig Rasmussen did well as our playmaker, setting up two goals."
Hemming: "Comments Mr. Anderson?"
Anderson: "A very good win, on a hot and humid pitch. Naesby didn't get a shot on target."
Stroh continues: "In the cup game against Olstykke FC, we had a bit of a let down. Despite Rasmussen scoring early thanks to a fine pass from Rasmus Schmidt, Olstykke scored twice to win."
Anderson: "This isn't a concern to me. Cup games are not finacially viable for us right now, so it is better not to waste time with them."
Stroh and Anderson exchanged somewaht mournful glances. Stroh continues: "At any rate, our keeper Bo Knudsen had a good day, so that's promising.
And yestoday was our big shocker. We got goals from Rasmussen, Benny Oleson - in his first game of the season, Skjold-Hansen, and Rasmus Schmidt - giving him 6 in 3 league games, and everyone else played generally well as we gave up only one goal to the home-side Holstebro."
Anderson: "The win means we actually sit top of the table after 3 games."
Hemming: "Good. These reports please me. We still have a lot of work to do before we start making a good profit, but our financials and vital statistics are looking promising. Our trend is forward and up, not backward or down....
<here Hemming begins a long and boring powerpoint presentation, involving many colorful charts, unintelligable graphics, and bad clip art. For the sake of preventing an outbreak of narcolepsy, we will skip forward 10 minutes>
...We must stay proactive in our approach, building a fan base. I see no reason why we can't push for promotion. However, we must bring in higher potential players to really push us into the black. From what I have seen from our games, our product is still in development, but with some strong planning, we should be there soon. Young R. Schmidt, is doing better than I expected in drawing some attention, so we should continue to nurture his ego for the time being. Thank you for your reports, that is all for today."

Rep Power: 0 | Weren't we just here?
Stroh: "...Against Naestved, our signing Sverrision stole a victory for us, getting his second goal in the 86th. As you will remember, Mogens Toft had to start at left-back that game and was sent off in the 2nd half with a straight red, so the winning goal came when we were a man down.
Agaisnt HIK, we felt the effects of a home crowd, and although Rasmussen scored early for us, after Benny Thomsen was sent off, we couldn't hold them off. HIK scored in the 26th and 74th, although we did very well a man down.
Against Olstykke FC, Skold-Hansen scored from a nice Rasmus Schmidt pass, but the visitors scored through Perkovic. We really should have been able to win this game.
And yesterday, we probably should have won at Korup as well. Rasmussen scored early for us again, and although Korup tied it up, we should have been able to hold on after Oswaldo Garcia..."
Hemming: "Garcia?"
Anderson: "Ah, yes sir. You might have noticed the player unable to communicate with his teammates? He's the Venezualan we picked up as cover at Forward. Free signing of course. We don't expect that much from him..."
Stroh coughs: "Yes, so we should have been able to win the game after his goal in the 87th, but Korup got lucky with a goal just before the whistle. I think we were very unlucky to only get a draw there. We sit in 5th place now, but not too far out of the promotion zone."
Hemming: "Well, we've had some interest in players, but I haven't been able to get any profit for any of them. We may just have to start looking at these outgoing as merely cutting our wage bill. Any word of any other useful signings?"
Anderson: "Uh, no sir... perhaps if we raised our age-limit?"
Hemming: "That is not an option. I have been in contact with an advertising agency here in Copenhagen, and we have been discussing options. I'd like to get your opinions..."
<again, the Society for the Prevention of Narcolepsy has asked us to omit the monologue that followed, although the Insomniacs for Sleep Association requested us to include it. We side with the former.>

Rep Power: 0 | Is this even legal?
Ove Stroh sat in the office looking over the recent transfers to Boldklubben Skjold: Christian Boje - D L/C, 20 years of age, decent enough to start soon. Exchanged with Rasmus Mikkelsen in deal with Glostrup FK. David Pesce - Italina Goalkeeper. Age 18. Okay, but mainly to provide some depth. Telmo Rocha - Portuguese Striker, Age 19. Promising, though not by much. Florian Fisher - German sweeper/defender/defensive midfielder, age 18. Jacob Henriksen 16 year old defender. Exchanged with Per Bengsston in deal with Dalum. Anders Borup 24 yeard old midfielder on loan from Holstebro.
Stroh tapped his fingers lightly on the printed sheet. "Hey, Jan," he said. "How much did we get for Brian Lund?"
Anderson, who had been dozing in his chair after a particularly tiring training session, yawned, "18 thousand I think."
"And Anders Anderson?"
"Nothing. Hemming just wanted to lighten the wage bill."
Stroh muttered something to himself and said, "And who is this Andy Hughes we are trying to sign? Sounds English..."
Anderson, still with his eyes closed, "Welsh actually. 16-year old striker. Recommended by Hermansen."
"Another 16 year old, good god. Hermansen? I though he was on the continent still?"
"Nah, he's over in the UK now."
Stroh stood up suddenly, "I just don't know what to make of it Jan. This is the most bizarre club I've ever been with. All these young players, no veterans to lead the bunch. All these loaners and teenagers with no experience. I just can't make heads or tails of it."
Anderson said, "You're telling me? Hemming may be completely bonkers and an egotistical self-serving money-grubbing phony, but it seems to be working right?"
"That's what I can't wrap my brain around. Okay, so Dalum comes to town, and they are in first place after our poor results. What happens? Rasmus Schmidt scores in the opening minutes, Sverrison converts a penalty and we limit Dalum to no shots on goal. Fine, a fluke I get it.
Then Norresndby comes to visit. Rasmus Schmidt puts three past them to get to 10... that's right 10 goals in 8 league games, and we stroll off the pitch laughing. All right, fair is fair, we're a good home side.
So then we head off to Kalundborg, and they score on us in the 7th. Great, now we'll see how our team does on the road, down a goal. What do we do? Rasmussen scores off a Balslev cross - yes, Balslev a player I wouldn't have kept at this club more than a day- Skjold-Hansen scores a freekick, Garcia comes off the bench, and despite being unable to understand a single thing we are telling him to do, scores a great goal, and then Skold-Hansen scores again and we run out 4-1.
You see Jan, this is where things start to confuse me... We're not that good are we? A bunch of never-will-be's and kids not even shaving?"
Anderson snorts.
"And then yesterday, we're back at home for Glostrup. Glostrup is playing a completely negative tactic and looking for a point. We go up a goal through Rasmussen again, but Glostrup scores. So we are struggling to find a thing and Hemming tells us to bring Garcia on for Rasmus Schmidt, and guess what? He scores a scorcher to give us the win... I'm telling you Jan, it's like living in a dream, something just isn't right..."
A phone rings in the office, and Anderson groans and picks it up: "Hello sir.... Yes, that's right Per Jorgensonp was injured in the game yesterday.... yes, I've got the physio report right here... out for two weeks.... right, his birthday is in about 10 days... Did I hear you right sir? you want him to be transfer listed?... He's started almost every.... and done quite well... okay sir, will do."
Anderson put down the phone and sighed heavily. "Well Ove, I guess we'd better get Boje ready to start at left back."
Stroh collapsed into his seat again, "Baffling."
"I know, just sit back and enjoy the ride.... while it lasts."

Rep Power: 0 | I recall, Central Park in Fall
Hemming arrived a few minutes early at the conference room where he had originally accepted the job at Boldklubben Skjold. To be honest, all Hemming had to do was take the elevator down from his office, cross the street, and take the elevator in the other building up (one floor higher than his office, if that means anything).
"Ah, Mr. Hemming!" said the distinguished elder, "I pleased you were able to join us today before you left for New York for the winter."
"Well, one must eat, and if its not a business lunch, then it is not quite as tasty."
"Too true, too true," said the elder chuckling. "So Mr. Hemming, please help yourself to the dishes we've had delivered, and tell us about the season so far."
"I think we've done better than we could have hoped. Sitting comfortably near the top of the table, and holding our own financially for the time being. I consider our biggest problems right now is the continued dead weight of the old players at the club, and our quality of signings to the club needs to improve significantly to have the return of investment we all expect.
I might mention as well, that we really have only had two or three highly touted prospects sign so far, and I'm not convinced that those will give us much profit. The most recent, Englishman Simon McGregor, a left-back, may develop, but he is already 19. Our loaned in players have served us well, so it is always nice to get something for nothing.
I should mention also that Klaus Stroh, who was very solid for us has been transferred away by his home club, so we've had to get a replacement loaner at the position... one Mogens Thomsen."
Mr. Hemming took a small piece of bread and spread some caviar on top.
"Our results have been satisfactory for the talent we currently have, though we did struggle a bit at the end of the season."
"Do you know the cause of the struggles?"
"Yes, for the most part. Our 1-1 draw against Fremad Amager was a difficult away game. Young Garcia, who has suprised us, scored but the home side was determined not to lose ground in the table and scored in the 2nd half to tie.
Our easy win against Svendborg was expected, Garcia scoring again and two generous penalty decisions let Sverrison take the scoreline to 3-0.
FC Nordjylland scored on their only shot on target, and we didn't, so that for some part accounts for that loss. Not one of our better performances.
Then we were easily beaten at home in the the last match, this last weekend, before the winter break. That loss is easy to explain as Bo Knudsen, who had been stellar at keeper for most of the season, despite being a fairly poor talent, was terrible, letting in two early goals. After that the team couldn't muster much fight, though that wasn't suprising."
"And yet, despite those losses you still sit 2nd in the table."
"Yes."
"Is promotion a potentiality?"
"I suppose, though frankly, I'm not sure that the talent we have is enough to succeed at the next level. If we do go up, it will help us realize a quicker return to our investments.... This is excellent caviar, by the way."
"As for the break, have you any plans for the club."
"Well, I am expecting to be in New York for the next several months. Stroh and Anderson have proved themselves competent enough to watch the club in my absence."
"Do you trust them?"
"Not particularly, but they do what their told. I've told Anderson to try and schedule some friendlies, just to get something out of the players in the break. Otherwise, over the break it is two things in particular. 1) Sign good talent 2) Dump old baggage. "

Anders Hemming arrived at his office, newly finished with maple hardwood floors (replacing his old floor of maple hardwood, removed for not being "maple-y" enough), and turned on his flat screen TV to a satellite feed from New York.
He poured himself a drink from his liquor cabinet, and told his office to call the number of Stroh and Anderson. (And by telling his office, we literally mean his 'office'... Hemming having added a voice-recognition system to the already heavily computer controlled central heat, electricity, TV, radio, etc).
A short wait, and then Anderson answered the phone:
"Hello?"
"Ah, there you are Anderson. I'm back in Copenhagen, so wanted to check in with you as far as where we are after the break."
"Okay."
"Is Stroh there?"
"Um, no sir. He's out with the players on the pitch right now, it's our regular practice period."
"No matter, you can fill me in then."
"Alright sir. I guess I'll start with transfers.
We've only signed two players over the break, as I mentioned when I notified your New York office. Jordi Valero, a centeral defender, and Luis Checa an attacking midfielder, both Spanish."
"Ah, excellent. Is Valero a good towering man for the back line?"
"Er... not really, more of a good positional sense player, though not very tall."
"Hmmm.... but Checa is a quick playmaker with strong passing and vision?"
"Um... no. He's more of a muscle and height guy."
"Well.... Go on."
"We've brought in four more loaners: Bo Frandsen a decent defensive midfielder who may crack the first team. Allan Pallesen A right winger, who we will probably use as a back-up or striker. Finn Lund Center-back, who is probably a first teamer now.
and Rasmus Hopfner A right midfielder, who immediately makes us a stronger attacking team for his fine dribbling and movement."
"How about the outgoing?"
"Only Per Jorgensen who left on a free," Anderson said adding in an in-audible mutter, "and our first-team left-back besides."
"And Carsten Steffensen," Anderson continued, "who we flogged off to Norresundby for 40k. He was pretty disappointing in his games, so that was good."
Hemming said, "And any prospects found lately by our scouts?"
"Well Johansen is off to Africa right now, after... well, I forget where he was last... He hasn't had much to recommend lately... and Kastrup is heading to Greece and Turkey. I actually haven't heard anything from Hermansen lately..."
Hemming cut in, "That's because he was poached from us by Akademisk Boldklub. they offered him a coaching position and he accepted."
"D***, he was our best scout."
"Yes. Anything else to report?"
"I suppose you haven't heard about our friendly games. Not much interest there I'm afraid. I scheduled three with non-league German sides, and we... well didn't really do that well. We beat Bonlanden and SC Victoria, but lost to Aschaffenburg."
"Anybody show up for the games?"
"About 200 a game."
"Well, that's at least a little bit of money returned."

Rep Power: 0 | What's a business man to do when all there is... is football?
Anders Hemming stood up out of his seat on the sideline for the first time all season. Mogens Thomsen was lining up a freekick in the 86th minute. Skjold had dominated the game at home against Hjorring, but couldn't get a shot the visiting keeper, Morten Frandsen.
It had been a busy few weeks for the manager... well, busy in a footballing sense. For the first time since taking over the club, Hemming hadn't been trying to wheel and deal players for cash, negotiating bids, and scouring scout reports for anyone worth investing in. Oh he would have been... had there been anything like that to do.
So with 5 games from March 16 to April 6th, Hemming had actually been showing some interest in the football being played.
The first game after the had been against Holstebro, and Rasmus Schmidt and Stig Rasmussen had made it an easy win before the first half finishing. Schmidt scoring twice. It had been an excellent day from the whole squad, with loaner Finn Lund particularly impressive in the 3-1 win.
Against Naesby, the club continued to look impressive, as a goal a piece from Rasmussen, Rasmus Schmidt, and Hopfner and strong defending let Skjold run out 3-0.
Hemming's interest in the club he was running only really started to grow when Korup came to town and Per Holm stole a win from Skold in the 81st minute, canceling out another strike from Rasmus Schmidt. Hemming had lashed out after the game at midfielder Anders Borup blaming the player for tying goal, and telling the 24-year-old that he would be up for transfer... until Anderson reminded him that Borup was only a loaned player, which calmed Hemming down considerably.
The tongue-lashing from a manager they had rarely seen seemed to deflate the club, and despite Rasmus Schmidt scoring his 15th goal of the season, Naestved took advantage by scoring three to send Skjold home with a loss.
Hemming had actually shown up at practice the following day, and apologized to the club for his anger saying that he had 'miscalculated' the impact of his fury, and that he wanted them all to know that he valued each of them in their own way. (Naturally, Hemming meant monetarily, but the players didn't know this... or at least didn't mind.)
---
The freekick bounced off the wall, and fell to a grateful Garcia whose shot looked true... until, Frandsen again appeared out of nowhere to poke the ball away. Sverrison who had been recently called up the Iceland squad, got the rebound... and with Hemming actually showing signs of excitement (his arms no longer crossed in front of him) the midfielder saw Frandsen again show shocking reflexes to deflect the shot...
and who should be there in front of a gaping net... but Anders Borup, now Hemming was practically on his toes.... and Borup scored. Hemming clapped his hands twice, and retook his seat.
'Maybe there's something to this besides money after all,' he though to himself. Then he chuckled, laughing at his own idiocy.
