Diary of Sam Smith - Friday 5th August 2005

As the final hours tick down before the new campaign starts, it's time to reflect on my progress so far. I'm happy with my signings on paper but as the famous quote goes "football isn't played on paper". The players are all happy with the training, the new coaches have been working them hard and watching Laudrup & Blissett taking ball control sessions is unbelievable.
The early season Sky Sports schedule is out and we've only been picked for two matches, both away, against Coventry and Luton so no extra money for us at the moment. Tomorrow at Turf Moor will show us more although surely we can't beat Bayern then flop in Lancashire, can we?

The phone interrupts my writing, it's Tim with the news that we've been drawn away against Shrewsbury Town in the Carling Cup 1st round. That's cheered me up as it's a chance to give a few squad players a game and still make the next round. He also has the news that he's managed to fix Shabazz up with a five month loan at Bristol Rovers. He's going to be wasted in our U18's and until he gets a bit more experience he's 4th or 5th striker with us.

Saturday 6th August 2005

Burnley v QPR
Coca-Cola Championship

I sent the players out early as everybody's a bit keyed up especially the seven lads making their debuts. We're playing 4-1-3-2 to utilize the strengths of Marc Bircham in a holding role. The first team I send out is Lancaster - Milanese, Shittu, Evatt, Bignot - Bircham - Robail, Gallen (C) Roelandts - Moore, Ciullo with Cole, Mahouvé, Cook, Rowlands and Sturridge on the bench.
The game was an absolute cracker, The R's took the lead after 11 minutes when Moore broke down the left wing and swung a deep ball to the right wing where Kevin Roelandts was waiting to volley home and a minute later they doubled their lead. In a superb move the midfield moved it left to right, Robail to Gallen to Roelandts who fired home a 20 yard scorcher. The home side pulled one back on 37 minutes when after a scramble around the net Lancaster again came for a cross that wasn't his and Gifton Noel-Williams beat him to the ball and headed home.
A minute after the restart the defense opened up and let Noel-Williams walk through to tie the scores. Sturridge pinched the third goal for QPR on 71 minutes when Shittu headed clear a corner right to Sturridge; he had been left all alone and ran the length of the Burnley half to fire low under the keeper. Substitute Sturridge and Moore wasted several good chances to put the game away and paid in the final minute. Lancaster couldn't hold a long range swerving shot and Ade Akinbiyi was first to react and poke it into the far corner. There was still plenty of drama in the four minutes of injury time; Rowlands fouled Grahame Branch in the area but Micah Hyde put the penalty miles over while Moore missed two nailed on chances in the final seconds.
Burnley 3-3 QPR
Burnley scorers: Noel-Williams 37, 46, Akinbiyi 90
QPR scorers: Roelandts 11, 12, Sturridge 71
Att: 14,757

Preston started well hammering Watford 4-0 while Wolves were 3-0 winners at Reading. Sheffield Wednesday beat Coventry 3-0 as well and Southampton were 3-1 winners at Elland Road.

Nice start Mavericktango, hope you do well with the rrrrr's. It's funny your Q.P.R as well is I choose a team that I couldn't see anyone else wrtting about that aren't to successful and didn't want to manage Saints as it stresses me if I do rubbish with them. Hopefully we will both succeed in are challenges. Going to have a quick nose at some of your purchases if they are on my database.

Monday 8th August 2005

I've managed to get rid of George Santo's £2,500 payroll by shipping him off to Bristol Rovers on a free. At 34 his good days are few and far between.

Tuesday 9th August 2005

Millwall v Queens Park Rangers
Coca-Cola Championship

We field an unchanged side for the trip to London rivals Millwall.
In a game of few chances both sides only record three shots on target. Unfortunately Millwall pinch the points when Paul Lancaster has another of those moments in the 20th minute when he comes for a cross and is beaten to it by Carl Asaba for a goal on his debut.
Millwall 1-0 QPR
Millwall scorers: Asaba 20
QPR scorers: none
Att: 16,361

Burnley get another score draw, 2-2 against Southampton while Leeds suffer their second home defeat, this time 3-2 against Watford. Palace win at Luton to go top and Sheffield United's win at Derby by the same score takes them second.

Diary of Sam Smith - Friday 12th August 2005

Stefan Bailey has been allowed to go on a five month loan to Bournemouth to gain experience. Paul Lancaster is having too many lapses for my liking, I think I'm going to have to take a deep breath and throw Jake Cole into the fray. Robail's place is under threat as well as he's failed to reproduce his pre season form so far.
Our first two home games, tomorrow against Reading and next week against Cardiff have now been scheduled for Sky Sports now.

Saturday 13th August 2005

Queens Park Rangers v Reading
Coca-Cola Championship

In this only change Jake Cole comes in for his first ever competitive game in place of Lancaster.
For most of the half Rangers incisive passing had the visitors chasing shadows but unfortunately the end product was not forthcoming. The Royals even went into the break leading when Bignot's pass back on the half hour left Cole facing both Lilta and Kitson charging at him. All three collided and the ball broke for Kitson to sweep into the net.
We dominated the second half but still couldn't find a breakthrough. On the hour I swapped the formation to 4-4-2, as Bircham just wasn't imposing himself on the game, without any real improvement. The R's slip to their second successive 1-0 defeat
[b]QPR 0-1 Reading
QPR scorers: none
Reading scorers: Kitson 29
Att: 19,112

Premiership? You're having a laff! At this rate we'll be heading for League One as we slump to 21st with just one point. Sheffield United's 2-0 win over Preston and Palace's 1-0 win against Hull leave them both on top with 100% records.

Monday 15th August 2005

Things are going bad at all levels, Dominic Shimmin lasted two minutes in his England U19's debut before being sent off.

Diary of Sam Smith - Friday 19th August 2005

Dominic is really down after what must be the shortest England appearance ever. The 4-1-3-2 doesn't seem to be working, Bircham is not getting into games and he's certainly not protecting the back four. I think I'll go with a simple 4-4-2 for tomorrow's game against Cardiff. I've tried to get many people in on loan but most of my offers have been rejected by the clubs, those that have been accepted, the players have turned down. One exception is 20 year old Swedish midfielder Sebastian Larsson who has joined on a three month loan from Arsenal.

Saturday 20th August 2005

Queens Park Rangers v Cardiff City
Coca-Cola Championship

The Sky Sports cameras are here for the late afternoon kick-off with the 19th placed Welshmen. Larsson comes in for his first ever competitive league game. He plays in central midfield alongside Bircham with Gallen on the bench. Sturridge partners Moore up front as Ciullo drops to the bench too.
The Rangers send the crowd wild by opening the scoring after 24 minutes. Bircham pumped a long ball over the top of the defense and as the visitors keeper came rushing out he missed it completely to leave Sturridge with a simple tap-in. Both sides showed why they're currently down the bottom as the first half rapidly became a dour midfield battle.
QPR were comfortably in control in the second half without ever creating much. On 67 minutes I shoved Gallen on up front in place of the tiring Sturridge and Ciullo on the wing in place of Roelandts and it was the two of them that wrapped up the points with six minutes left. A swift one-two after a free kick between Gallen and Ciullo left Gallen on the corner of the six yard box and he lifted it over the onrushing keeper into the far corner of the net.
QPR 2-0 Cardiff
QPR scorers: Sturridge 25, Gallen 85
Cardiff scorers: none
Att: 19,127

The table doesn't mean much at this early stage but the win lifts us up to 17th. Both Sheffield Utd and Palace draw to lose their 100% record while Sheffield Wednesday move up to third with a 3-2 win at Crewe. Leeds are hammered 5-1 at Stoke.

Monday 22nd August 2005

Southampton's Trinidad & Tobagan striker Kenwyne Jones has agreed to join us on a season long loan he's yet to score for Saints but scored 7 in 7 appearances for Wednesday last season and 3 in 13 for Stoke. Jake Cole has picked up bruised ribs so might miss a week or two.

Wednesday 24th August 2005

Shrewsbury Town v Queens Park Rangers
Carling Cup 1st Round

We retained the 4-4-2 shape with Royce replacing the injured Cole. I experiment with Ciullo on the left wing and new loanee Jones partners Sturridge up front.
The result was never in doubt as Rangers dominated the League Two side from start to finish. Shrewsbury managed just two off target shots while QPR fired off 24 shots, unfortunately most were wayward. Two did go in during the first half though, Larsson found Jones out wide in the fifteenth minute and he turned his man before slipping to to an unmarked Ciullo. He fired home his first goal for the club and quarter of an hour later it was two when Shrewsbury headed clear a free kick straight to Shittu who volleyed home a scorcher from 25 yards.
Shrewsbury 0-2 QPR
Shrews scorers: none
QPR scorers: Ciullo 15, Shittu 30
Att: 4,275

Saturday 27th August 2005

The second round draw for the Carling Cup has given us a home tie against West London rivals Fulham.

Leeds United v Queens Park Rangers
Coca-Cola Championship

In recognition of their fine Carling Cup performance I send out to same side to face the 19th placed Yorkshire men at Elland Road.
This was a wide open attacking game which for the most part the keepers were on top, Leeds suffered a blow though after 27 minutes when Webster was sent off for pulling Gallen back. Both sides hit the post and the game was looking more and more like a 0-0 draw until the R's defense gave substitute Ian Moore half a yard in the 77th minute and he slammed it past M.o.M. Royce at his near post. Rangers grabbed a deserved point in the 91st minute when Bignot just slung it deep into the area and Lee Cook managed to poke it past Sullivan. It came off the post and agonizingly rolled along the goaline before going in.
Leeds 1-1 QPR
Leeds scorers: Moore 77
QPR scorers: Cook 91
Att: 21,366

The draw lifts us to 15th whist wins for Palace, 5-0 at Burnley and Sheff. Utd, 3-0 over Crewe kept them unbeaten at the top.

Monday 29th August 2005

Queens Park Rangers v Derby County
Coca-Cola Championship

Marcel Mahouvé came in for his league debut in place of the injured Evatt while Rose replaced the under performing Bignot.
The visitors were on the back foot from as early as the second minute when their keeper Lee Camp took a free kick 10 yards inside his own half. Matthew Rose won the header and nodded it straight to Sturridge on the halfway line and his 50-yard lob bounced into the unprotected net. Rangers were always in command then and the only surprise was that it took them to the final minute of the half to add to their tally. Rose's free kick into the box was headed firmly home by Jones.
Nothing got past Mahouvé and Shittu at the back in the second half and Kenwyne Jones is getting better by the game.
QPR 2-0 Derby
QPR scorers: Sturridge 2, Jones 45
Derby scorers: none
Att: 17,496

The win powers the R's up to 8th but eight points behind the front runners of Palace and Sheffield United who have both won five out of six and drawn the other.

Wednesday 31st August 2005

The reserves managed a 1-1 draw at Cardiff. Stijn De Smet stared and scores the R's only goal while Shimmin was solid at the back.
Six players have been called up for international friendlies on September 2nd and 3rd - Stijn De Smet (Belgium U21's), Ugochukwu Ukah (Nigeria U21's), Tommy Docherty (Northern Ireland), Richard Langley (Jamaica), Marc Bircham (Canada) and Kenwyne Jones (Trinidad and Tobago).

Wednesday 7th September 2005

Danny Shittu and Kevin Roelandts were selected in the Championship team of the week.

Paul Furlong and Marc Nygaard scored as the reserves won 2-0 at Bristol Rovers.

[i] Saturday 10th September 2005 [i]

Queens Park Rangers v Norwich City
Coca-Cola Championship

For the visit of the side directly below us in the table Evatt takes Bignot's place on the bench and a fit again Jake Cole is on the bench instead of Lancaster.
The visitors were reduced to 1o men on the half hour when Andy Hughes picked up his second yellow card of the game. With 10 minutes left of the half Roelandts drifts a corner into the six yard box and in the almighty scramble that ensued Marc Bircham was on hand to poke it home.
Gallen replaced Sturridge at halftime and he was able to seal Ranger's win thanks to Norwich keeper Robert Green. Just two minutes into the second half Green pushed Jones at a corner and Gallen stepped up to blast home. Matthew Rose had to go off just before the hour and we had to switch to 3-1-4-2 but Rangers handled the swap well. The points were safe with 13 minutes left when Green dwelled on a back-pass and Gallen nipped in to dispossess him and slot it into the empty net. Craig Fleming sneaked in to score a consolation goal two minutes from time but it was scarcely deserved.
QPR 3-1 Norwich
QPR scorers: Bircham 35, Gallen 48, 77
Norwich scorers: Fleming 88
Att: 19,133

The win maintains our 8th position in the middle of four clubs on 11 points. Palace beat Derby 3-0 and Sheffield Utd win 1-0 at Southampton to keep their positions at the top of the table.

Matthew Rose has unfortunately suffered a badly twisted knee and will probably miss the best part of a month.

Diary of Sam Smith - Sunday 11th September 2005

The loss of Rose is a bit of a blow as I don't really think Bignot is up to it. At least the boys seem to be stringing some results together now, Kenwyne Jones has only scored once but he's been very lively up front. Danny Shittu has been a real rock at the back and Mahouvé has had two good games partnering him, could be the start of something that will take us to the Premiership especially given the form of Royce. I owe him an apology after writing him off, he's come through with the goods since I was forced to play him.

Tuesday 13th September 2005

Mauro Milanese and Danny Shittu were selected in the Championship team of the week.

Leicester City v Queens Park Rangers
Coca-Cola Championship

For the visit to fifth placed Leicester Bignot replaced the injured Rose and Nygaard comes in for his debut in place of Sturridge who doesn't seem fully fit.
Leicester pour forward and swarm all over QPR for the first half an hour. Ranger's cause isn't helped when Bignot is forced off after 13 minutes and Milanese's early booking means he'll be suspended for the next game. The R's held firm through and took the lead against the run of play in the 31st minute. Nygaard is floored in the area by Nils-Eric Johansson and Ciullo steps up confidently to fire the penalty into the bottom corner.
Leicester lost their way in the second half and even when Mahouvé limped off just past the hour they couldn't find away past the R's defense ably marshaled by Shittu who was dominant in the air.
Leicester 0-1 QPR
Leics scorers: none
QPR scorers: Ciullo 31 pen
Att: 32,279

It was a hard fought victory at a cost, Marcus Bignot has suffered strained knee ligaments and will miss up to two months while Marcel Mahouvé has a bruised thigh. As Milanese will be suspended for the next game I tell Prav, our Physio to give Marcel a course of injections to get him through Saturday's game at Preston.
The result sees us leap frog Leicester into 5th place. Palace and Sheffield Utd both carry on their winning streaks to maintain their leads at the top.

Wednesday 14th September 2005

Furlong scores twice and De Smet adds another as the reserves beat Gillingham 3-1.

Friday 16th September 2005

After days of ringing round trying to get some defensive cover in Matthew Kilgallon of Leeds agrees to join us on loan for two months.

Saturday 17th September 2005

Preston North End v Queens Park Rangers
Coca-Cola Championship

Kilgallon goes straight into the side at left back and Shimmin makes his first ever competitive league start in central defense. Ugochukwu Ukah also makes his debut at right back in a makeshift defense for the trip to 17th placed Preston.
Shittu marshals the defense perfectly and although Preston have most of the chances neither side manage to hit the target in the first half.
Preston caught Rangers just minutes into the second half and McKenna was left all alone in the area to fire in from 16 yards. Rangers fought hard for the equaliser and finally drew level as we entered the last 20 minutes. Gallen got down the wing and his cross was struck firmly by Bircham, the keeper parried it and in the ensuing scramble Sturridge poked it home. We looked as though we were going to hang on for the draw until Patrick Agyemang found Davidson on the edge of the area with four minutes left. He turned Shimmin easily and fired past Royce for the winner.
Preston 2-1 QPR
Preston scorers: McKenna 47, Davidson 86
QPR scorers: Sturridge 69
Att: 12,498

Hull's 3-0 win over Luton takes them above us on goal difference into fifth. Palace and Sheff. Utd are looking unbeatable as Palace win 4-2 at Leeds and United beat Plymouth 3-1. They're now 7 points clear of Reading and Wolves with Hull and us four points behind the third/fourth teams.

Well this is the way i do it

Whilst playing the game, find the screen you want to print, Find the Print screen button (just above the quit game button) and print to Text file. Go through the SI folder on your computer, go though it until you find the file you want and then just cut and paste onto the message board.
