It was a quiet day in the office; a 12 day gap between matches meant that there was not huge amounts of work to do. The IT guys were installing a patch to the servers and had kicked everyone off their computers. Most of the staff had gone home for the day but a few had stayed and were hanging about in the staff lounge.

Will was laying back on the sofa and idling counting the cracks in the ceiling. "Do you think I was wrong to sell Elliot?", he asked after a while, breaking the silence in the room.

"Huh?" mumbled his assistant, half-looking up from his paper.

"Marvin Elliot, should I have sold him?", Will repeated the question.

David put down his paper and thought for a moment. "Well, he is a very fine young player and would have done well for us. However, 900K is a lot to turn down when the bank balance is only hovering a little above zero."

The bid from Portsmouth came in not long after he took over the job. Perhaps Alain Perrin was trying to sneak in and take advantage of his inexperience and lack of knowledge of the players. Whatever the case, they wanted the player and Will knew his chairman wanted the money. After a meeting with the player in question he had decided to accept the bid. Elliot was definitely a good player but seemed very enthusiastic about the chance to play in the Premiership and Will couldn't really blame him.

"Besides", David continued, "without that money and the 300K you got for Mark Phillips you wouldn't have been able to amass such an over-sized squad"

Will looked across and returned David's grin. He knew he shouldn't worry about past choices now. Millwall were 3rd in the league after the first month and things were looking quite positive.

Satisfied, he returned his gaze upwards, watching the progress of an adventurous black spider as it made it's way across the white painted ceiling.

Will wasn't happy. It seems that the 12 day break had not done his players any good at all. Not only did a lacklustre performance allow Stoke to claim a deserved 2-0 home win, but the match also resulted in 3 injuries. Cogan, Serioux and Marshall being the latest three to be keeping the physios busy.

De Vlieger had not been match fit before the Stoke match and so Will had decided to give Marshall his first game of the season. Now his injury meant he had a total of three keepers out of action. Will had made a point of reminding his assistant manager how lucky it was that he still had another three left to choose from. Big squads have their advantages.

Normal service was thankfully restored as a fine team performance saw Millwall emerge victorious over a struggling Brentford. Lupoli and Foran grabbing a goal each either side of half-time in the 2-0 win. Despite Brentford only having a few attempts on target, a continually-impressive De Vlieger was awarded Man of the Match. The only downside being another name to add to the injury list; Joe Keenan out of action for a few weeks with a damaged foot.

There was a knock on Will's office door and the Manager looked up from his notes to see Alan McLeary, one of his coaches, peering round the doorway. At David's insistence, Will had given McLeary charge of the U18 squad as the man seemed to have an unnatural affinity with the youngsters as well as unparalleled discipline and a keen eye for potential.

"What are you doing here on a Sunday morning?", the coach queried. "You should be taking the day off and getting some rest.

"I know", replied a tired Will, "but with so many injuries this past week I've been a bit worried. Not sure if I'm pushing the players too hard or it's just been an unfortunate co-incidence."

"Well, if you can tear yourself away for a while I think I've got just the thing to cheer you up. The under 18s are off to Bristol shortly and I really think you should come along and watch Lamah in action. He's been on fire so far and I think he could do well if you gave him a few chances in the first team."

Will did need cheering up and so he gratefully accepted the offer and followed McLeary to the coach.

18 year old left winger Lamah had been one of the Belgian potentials that his scouts had discovered. He'd picked him up for 16K in the pre-season but had so far been too busy to check up on the U18 teams progress so far this season. Something he made a mental note to resolve in future.

The game had not been overly-thrilling but Lamah had deserved his Man of the Match award. Watching from the stands, Will had made several notes on the youngster as well as a few others.

"Hasn't been his best game, to be fair", commented McLeary, as the final whistle blew. "He bagged two goals and an assist against Luton last game."

Will pondered for a moment. "He's not particularly quick for a winger tho is he?, and doesn't look very efficient crossing the ball. I do admit that there is definitely something special about him tho."

McLeary grinned. "There is indeed. And he is making very good progress in training so I'm not concerned that those things will be an issue for long."

"Well, I'll certainly consider giving him a run out for the main squad in the future."

"Excellent." McLeary got up and turned to leave. "See you back at the coach, I'd better get back and debrief the lads.
