Wednesday 23rd September 2009

When I came home from the morning training I was surprised to see nobody downstairs, but still hearing music coming out of the speakers upstairs. I was surprised, because I didn't expect anybody to be at home. Lynn was supposed to be at her father's company, taking care of business, and nobody else had keys to the house. I decided to take a sneak peak upstairs. When I came into our bedroom door, I was greeted with an amazing sight. Lynn was sitting on the bed and looking frightfully sexy, wearing nothing but a negligée and told me that she had news that would blow my brains.
”What news baby? Are you going to propose to me or kick me out of the house?”, I asked sort of nervously and at the same quite distracted by the way she dressed, or more like didn't dress.
”How would you feel if you found out that you were going to be a parent?”, was her merciless reply.
I felt like I'd been punched out. Was she saying what I thought she was?
”Are you trying to tell me that you've got a bun in the oven?”, I asked and was visibly animated now.
”Not only a bun baby”, she replied and winked at me.
”You mean it's twins?”, I asked again and now very nervously
”Nope, not twins”, she said and grinned wide.
”Then what? Puppies?”, I asked and winked at her.
She burst out laughing and then replied: “Triplets, which is something I don't think is in your family and, to be honest, is nowhere to be seen in my family either.”
I was stunned, but when the news started to sink in, I sat down next to her and kissed her.
”This is wonderful news baby. How far are you gone?”, I asked and looked her in the eye.
”2 months, I just wanted to be absolutely sure before I broke the news to you. I hope you're not angry with me”, she said and gave me that puppy look she sometimes did.
”Me?? Angry?? Not on your nelly Lynn. I'm absolutely awestruck and on cloud nine”, I replied and gave her a real bear hug.

We were quite busy celebrating this revelation for the next two hours or so, but then I called the office and told them that I wouldn't be coming in for the rest of the day. I'd give them the reason when I came in the following day.

I called the chairman and told him the news, but only after Lynn had told her father about this. Understandably he was very happy, but at the same time he was quite sad that his late wife couldn't be there to celebrate with us. We told him that she'd no doubt be watching us and be very happy about this turn of events.

More football ensued and we had a real test coming up the following weekend. Newcastle, who had been having a terrible run of form lately, were our next opponents and we would have to face them without a few of our most influential players.

Newcastle v. Derby English Premiership
This turned out to be one of the most action packed matches of the season so far and only in the 2nd minute, James Milner was left alone some 25 yards from the goal. He decided to go for glory and hammered the ball into the top corner, totally unstoppable for Iven Austbo in the goal. 5 minutes later, Mikael Dahlberg got us back to level terms and Dexter Blackstock got us in front, in the 28th minute, with a diving header. We were 2-1 up at halftime and I told the lads to keep it up, they certainly had the qualities necessary to finish the match. Mikael Dahlberg then added his second and our third goal in the 49th minute, much to the joy of the travelling fans. On 71 minutes Milner was left all alone in our penalty area and he didn't waste any time hammering it home. The fact that he was alone in the box was to do with John Welsh totally misreading the flow of play. We managed to hold on to the win, despite quite a few hairy moments in the last 20 minutes. A fantastic game of football and a good reason to keep playing the beautiful game.
Final Score: 2-3
Goals: Mikael Dahlberg (7, 49), Dexter Blackstock (28)
MOM: Mikael Dahlberg
Current League Position: 3rd

I was full of praise for the lads after the match, despite Welshie and Hayder not having the best of games for us. They came on at a difficult time in the match and never got into the flow of play. It's just one of those days I presume and they'll get back to better things soon.

October 2009
Due to the international break, I decided to take Lynn with me to Copenhagen for the World Cup Qualifier against Portugal, because I knew that she'd love the change of scenery and she already knew quite a few of the Danish players, since I'd been trying my best to bring them to Derby. At the time of the match, I had already secured the services of 5 Danes, and after the match I decided to try for 2 more. But more on that later.

We spent the better part of a week in Copenhagen and were having a blast, going to Dyrehavsbakken and Tivoli to try out the various scary rollercoasters, though the best ones had already been dismantled due to some poxy EU regulations. Lynn was having a great time and we topped it off by going to visit both the Tuborg and Carlsberg factories. Gone are the days of bitter competitiveness between the two, since there's only one owner of both now (if I'm killing the truth in this section, bear with me. I'm only using some poetic licence to create the atmosphere, at least that's my excuse).

Denmark v. Portugal World Cup Qualifying Grp 7
This match was really hard fought and at times I thought that we'd never manage to score, thanks to some miraculous saves by the Portuguese goalkeeper, Moreira. When we went in at halftime with a goalless draw on our sheet, I wasn't best pleased, due to the massive domination we'd exerted out there. I gave the lads a really hard time in the dressing room and took off two players at the break. Christian Traoré and Lasse Qvist came on for Mikkel Thygesen and Peter Lövenkrands, respectively. Nothing was going right for us and in the 58th minute I sent on Nikolaj Agger, Daniel's younger brother, for Tommy Bechmann. In the 78th minute we finally broke the ice, when Jon Dahl Tomasson scored the opening goal from a penalty, after Fernando Meira pushed Lasse Qvist over in the penalty area. Almost straight from the restart, we stole the ball from the visitors and Dennis Cagara sent a pinpoint cross to Qvist's head and we were suddenly 2-0 up and coasting. Then in injury time, Kasper Lorentzen scored the final goal, after some nice work from Daniel Agger and Leon Andreasen.
Final Score: 3-0
Goals: Jon Dahl Tomasson (pen 78), Lasse Qvist (80), Kasper Lorentzen (90)
MOM: Dennis Cagara
Current Group Position: 1st

Final standings in Group 7:
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre">| Pos | Inf | Team | | Pld | Won | Drn | Lst | For | Ag | G.D. | Pts | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 1st | Q | Denmark | | 10 | 8 | 2 | 0 | 28 | 5 | +23 | 26 | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 2nd | Pl | Serbia & Mont. | | 10 | 6 | 3 | 1 | 21 | 9 | +12 | 21 | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 3rd | | Austria | | 10 | 4 | 2 | 4 | 13 | 11 | +2 | 14 | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 4th | | Portugal | | 10 | 3 | 5 | 2 | 9 | 8 | +1 | 14 | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 5th | | Estonia | | 10 | 1 | 2 | 7 | 7 | 25 | -18 | 5 | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 6th | | Azerbaijan | | 10 | 0 | 2 | 8 | 5 | 25 | -20 | 2 | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| </pre>

I took the whole team and invited them to a massive celebration dinner, much to their happiness. This wasn't very common in the past, but I wanted to keep up the great team spirit that had kept us moving on in the group. I told the lads that the greatest surprise for me was how poor the Portuguese team turned out to be. None of us had expected to steamroller over them both home and away. Not exactly the legacy that the silver winners of Euro 2004 could have envisioned.

We didn't have a long time to revel in our great accomplishment, because it was too close to the next league match. So I hustled the Derby players to the airport early next morning, so they could get enough rest before the league match against the Baggies.

Derby v. WBA English Premiership

If I'd been told beforehand that we'd win by two goals, I'd have ripped the hand off the person offering it. It turned out that we really had to work for the win, due to some really awesome saves made by Bogdan Lobont in the Baggies' goal. Paul Wotton eventually broke the ice with one of his trademark penalties and we went in at halftime one goal to the good. I wasn't very happy with the first half performance, so I made two substitutions at halftime, Troy Hayder came on for Dexter Blackstock and the ageing Giovanni van Bronckhorst came on for Pasquale Foggia. That change seemed to fire up the lads, though we just couldn't break down a stubborn Baggies defence. In the 56th minute Harry Kewell got himself booked for a needless and clumsy foul, so I used the opportunity and substituted him for Christian Traoré. 3 minutes later, Troy Hayder broke past Lee Peltier in the penalty area and then drilled an unstoppable shot into the far corner. It only took the Baggies 8 minutes to pull back a goal, after our defenders had somehow lost track of the ball and Robert Earnshaw capitalised on the error and tucked away the simplest of goals, or so I thought. When time was ticking into injury time, Liam Crook tried a rather risky backpass and who but Troy Hayder managed to sneak in front of the goalkeeper, 30 yards from goal, nodding the ball past him and then burying the loose ball from the said 30 yards. Lobont certainly didn't deserve this situation, because he'd had a brilliant game up to that point.
Final Score: 3-1
Goals: Paul Wotton (pen 45), Troy Hayder (59, 90)
MOM: Johannes Grahn
Current League Position: 2nd

I was very pleased after the match and spent a short time with the lads in the dressing room, offering them my congratulations on a good win. The Baggies are anything but easy to play against, so a win against them is always extremely uplifting. I told the guys to take the next day off from practice, because I knew they'd need the rest before our next match, which was scheduled to be against my favourite team, Liverpool. I was certain that I'd be feeling the butterflies all week long.

So here we were, walking around New Anfield. Quite an amazing stadium and my hopes were that the lads wouldn't be overawed by the surroundings. They'd have to be extremely focused to keep up with the league leaders. Our last game against them had ended with us losing by two goals and I was hoping that we'd be able to at least snatch a point in this horribly difficult away game.

Liverpool v. Derby English Premiership
We had a great start to the game, with Mikael Dahlberg scoring twice and Troy Hayder once before halftime. Xabi Alonso pulled a goal back for The Reds just before halftime and that's how the first half ended. In the second half The Reds came to life, scoring straight after the kickoff. Steven Gerrard broke free of his marker near the right hand side of the area and drilled a powerful shot into the far corner. In the 59th minute, Lukas Podolski got The Reds level, but Tommy Smith put us one up again in the next minute. Unfortunately our lads couldn't withstand the intense pressure, put on by Liverpool. in the final minutes of the game and Michael Owen and Podolski put the game beyond us in the final 10 minutes.
Final Score: 5-4
Goals: Mikael Dahlberg (23, 34) Troy Hayder (40), Tommy Smith (60)
MOM: Lukas Podolski (Liverpool)
Current League Position: 3rd

I really tore into the lads after the match, because the sort of capitulation that they showed in the match is totally untolerable at any level. True the Liverpool team were headed for the title, but at least let them earn their win by defending properly. I almost took the door off the hinges when I slammed it in anger and after the match I told the reporters how ****ed off I was at the way they conceded such stupid goals at the end. Overall the result was a fair one, because The Reds had been the better team overall, but the goals we conceded were very soft and very uncharacteristic of us.

The lads were quite sheepish when the finally drifted into the team bus, obviously knowing full well that my short fuse was shorter than usual. For their sake I hoped they'd perform better in our next match.

Before our next match, we received an offer from Arsenal for the services of Paul Boertien. They were having a major injury crises on their hands, with no left sided players fit to play and with Paul being available, they put in an offer of £500k, which I accepted right away. Paul was more than happy to talk to them and I was optimistic for him to get a deal he could live with.

Derby v. Crystal Palace English Premiership
The lads were raring to go, after the bollocking I'd dished out after the last match and it only took 6 minutes for us to score the first goal of the match. Rasmus Würtz scored with a thunderous shot from 35 yards and Kiraly in the Palace goal had no chance whatsoever. The visitors got more into it after that initial shock and we really had to hold on tight to avoid letting them back into the game. In the 29th minute Mikael Dahlberg scored with a beautiful header, after Hoyte's freekick from the right wing and that put a hold on the Palace onslaught. They suddenly couldn't string two passes together and somehow seemed to have lost all faith. In the second half, Christian Traoré pounced on a loose ball in the Palace box and put the game beyond any doubt. 3 minutes prior to his goal, Andy Johnson had suffered an injury, when he had a nasty clash of shins with Wotton, who didn't seem to be affected at all.
Final Score: 3-0
Goals: Rasmus Würtz (6), Mikael Dahlberg (29), Christian Traoré (70)
MOM: Paul Wotton
Current League Position: 3rd

I was much happier with the lads after this match and told them so. We're still in with a shout of the top two teams and with some luck we might even give them a scare, come the end of season.

The day after the match, Paul Boertien came to me and told me that he'd managed to secure a deal with the Arsenal management and thanked me for allowing him to talk to them. I wished him the best of luck and hoped that he'd be able to forge a good career with them. His transfer wouldn't be completed until 1st of January, but that's alright. At least we'd get a decent amount of money from his transfer. Additionally, I had to fork out £95k to Cefn Druids after Gerard Dohery came on in the game against Palace. I didn't mind that at all, since they were the team that gave me my first opportunity in management.

Next up was a trip to London to play against Arsenal. We knew that it would be a difficult match, because the Londoners had a hatful of good players on their team. Fortunately for us, they'd been suffering a rather unfortunate bout of injuries to key personnel, like Henry, Silva, Van Persie and Ashley Cole, none of which would be ready for the match against us and Fabregas, who was out suspended for violent conduct in one of their matches. But their reserve players couldn't be discounted, because that would be a virtual suicide on our behalf. So I hammered it into the lads in every training session of the week leading up to the game.

Arsenal v. Derby English Premiership
Prior to the match we were on edge, because an injured animal is always dangerous and Arsenal were very badly injured. Both with prior results and also with injuries and suspensions to key personnel. But we started fast and furiously and within 8 minutes, we were 2 goals up. Troy Hayder had started the scoring with a glorioys shimmy in the 5th minute and then tapped home the simplest of goals in the 8th minute, when Dahlberg squared the ball for him. In the second half Dahlberg put the result beyond any doubt, when he hammered home our third goal of the match in the 59th minute. Arsenal suffered yet another injury, when Alexander Hleb had to hobble off after 62 minutes. After the match it turned out that he'd be out for the next 4 weeks with a badly strained ligament.
Final Score: 0-3
Goals: Troy Hayder (5, 8), Mikael Dahlberg (59)
MOM: Duda
Current League Position: 2nd

I was ecstatic after the match and told the lads that they'd done the club proud on the day. I also told them to ignore all the usual media idiocy, claiming our win to be the result of the injuries to their players. A rich club like Arsenal usually has such quality in numbers in their squad, that usually they wouldn't suffer much from injuries, though we could accept that the injury to Henry was lucky for us and the suspension to Fabregas was his own folly. Van Persie wasn't there due to his own silly fighting habits in local pubs and breaking his hand in such conditions wasn't something that could be blamed on us.

November 2009
After the match against Arsenal I bid the team goodbye for the next few days, with the exception of the Danish players, because it was international game break and I took a few of the players along. Again Lynn decided to come with me and she was quite frisky, to be honest. I expected quite a bit of horizontal gymnastics during our stay in the hotel on Copenhagen. But that's getting away from the important part of the story, even if her bedroom escapades were enough to fill a novel in their own rights.

Daniel Agger was quoted in the Danish press that we ought to be able to beat the Bulgarian team, to give the people something to cheer about, due to our depth in quality. I spoke to him in private a little later and thanked him for how carefully he'd chosen his words. It looks like he's turning into a captain candidate for the future.

Denmark v. Bulgaria International Friendly
We started off really quick and it was totally against the run of play when Rasmus Würtz scored an accidental own goal in the 15th minute. 5 minutes later we were on level terms again through Sören Larsen and then in the 30th minute Jon Dahl Tomasson put us one up. At halftime I encouraged the lads to keep up the hard work, but all came to nought, because Christian Traoré fouled Bojinov near the edge of the area. It was so far out of the danger zone, that I really tore into the lad for doing this. Bojinov was moving away from the goal, to create space on the left wing when he got hacked down just inside the corner of the penalty area. Blagoy Georgiev scored from the resulting penalty and in the end the match ended like that, due to our inadequacies in front of the goal.
Final Score: 2-2
Goals: Sören Larsen (20), Jon Dahl Tomasson (30)
MOM: Sören Larsen

There wasn't much time to dwell on this poor result, because on the following Wednesday we had to be ready to face Russia in Moscow. So I told the lads to get their @rses back into their hotel rooms and rest, because there would be hell to pay if they performed so poorly again. Traoré was quite shocked to hear that, because he's obviously heard the horror stories from Troy Hayder, from my days in Wales, and must have believed them.

The day after the game I decided to test the resolve of Villareal and exclaimed my interest in signing Daniel Agger, who'd been one of the best defenders in Europe that season. Their manager was furious but then I found out, via some rather shady means, that Agger had a £5M release clause in his contract. And funny enough, it wasn't by tapping up the player or his agent. It turned out that one of my scouts had a way with women and managed to get this information out of their manager's secretary. There was no chance that I was going to let that rest, so I put in a transfer offer of £5 million up front. They had no option but to accept the offer and I got to offer the player a contract. He wasn't very keen at first but eventually saw my side of the argument, especially when I told him that there was a good chance we'd be playing in a European competition the following season. We'd need him to help us secure that feat. He asked for a few days to think it over and I happily obliged.

Russia v. Denmark International Friendly
The game was one of the most boring we'd witnessed in a long time and that was mostly due to the horrible conditions at the Lokomotiv Stadium in Moscow. -3°C, sleet and in all honesty the match should have been postponed. But the rules dictated that the game must go on and that's what we did. Sören Larsen scored the opening goal in the 6th minute, when he latched onto a throughball from Lövenkrands. But from that moment on we couldn't string 2 passes together and it came as no surprise when Kerzhakov equalised in the 70th minute, after a horrible mistake by Leon Andreasen. Nothing worthwhile happened after that though, so we escaped with a draw from terrible conditions.
Final Score: 1-1
Goal: Sören Larsen
MOM: Yury Zhirkov (Rus)

I berated the players in the dressing room, for being so horribly lethargic in the match, though I did sympathise with them over having to play in those conditions. Not putting in the effort though, was unacceptable and I just wanted them to know that from the off. I also told them that if I saw more of the same, many of them would find it hard to make it into the team for the World Cup finals. The realisation of that made some of them look quite anxious and fearful and rightly so, because this sort of a performance wouldn't do if we wanted to make it out of the group stage, let alone any further than that.

Agger took his days to think about our offer and finally decided to accept our terms. He'd been having second thoughts about his stay in Spain anyway, since his team was doing very poorly in the Spanish league. The rest of his teammates in the Danish national team congratulated him on his good sense, because this would help him come to terms with me and develop an understanding with the rest of the Danish players at Derby.
