FMS Awards 2006 - Second Interim Voting Round Post #31 | | Guest |
My personal opinion is that I think PM's Grumpies are good enough for the negative side, and that best title can go on the basis that the vote in that category is always very fragmented, and that it doesn't add much. I'm undecided on Best Story Idea, because Bryan does raise a valid point in questioning what qualifies as a "new" idea, but in general, I think it still adds something. Even if it's read as "most original story background" (e.g. an edited database thing).

Erm I think we should keep funniest writer and add funniest story. Writing comedy is a talent in itself and not that many people can do it consistantly and people who do so deserve to be rewarded. You might not have written the absolute funniest story on the forum, but you might still be deemed to be the funniest writer in the same way as best story/best writer is not always the same. So keep funniest writer it's one of the most prestigious awards in my not so humble opinion.

As for the Grumpies, I think by their nature and the fact we don't have as busy a forum as we used to that they will be every two years, so we should have one round about december/january seeing as the proper awards have been brought forward.

I pretty much agree with your previous two posts Stuart. Only concern for me is that it took years for people to really make a mental distinction between best writer and best story (only in recent years did the general voter start to realise a vote for best story does not automatically mean best writer goes to the author of that story), and that for a good while the two awards will go to the same person. I have no problem with that if it's "on merit", but there are further examples of two categories being too similar and always throwing up the same winner (I'm also thinking best edited data/best fantasy here for instance)

Yeah but I think people now are more able to distinguish there is difference between a one off which can win you best story/funniest story, and the fact that a person can have an overall quality of story that is, for the want of a better word, better than everyone else even if their best story isn't quite the best.
With funniest story I think its easier to define actually, someone can write a really funny, one off story but the rest of what they write isn't and there are other who consistantly can write a funny story. Actually probably, bobbev, BoN, Hd and myself are the few here can do that.
And anyway I'm just defending the award I've won twice, funniest writer >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t; best writer :p

I'd also echo the point about having both Funniest Story and Writer awards. I still like the Best Idea too, I tend to qualify it as how unique the approach to the story is. It isn'tsomething which goes and sets parameters on how the game is played, that's for the Challenges. Completely seperate.

As for the categories: so far, the main discussion (most of it earlier this year) centered around the scrapping of Best Title and Best Idea, and the adding of Funniest Story and Negative awards.
Can we collect current opinions on them now, ahead of a possible vote on changing categories BEFORE the last nomination round late September? | I like the idea of Funniest story and Funniest Writer.
And I think I'm with everyone else in not liking the negative awards.
However, what about Best Newcomer?

I echo the support for Funniest Story but I'm more ambivalent about Funniest Writer. Very few of us adopt an amusing style all of the time (at least not deliberately!) and I have always found it a difficult award to vote for. I quite like Best Title and still think that Best Idea has some legs. I agree that we don't need negative awards as we have the shiny new Grumpies for that.
P.S. QotS - we have a Best Newcomer award already.

I don't really object to keeping Funniest Writer. But if we add "Funniest Story" to the lineup, and we should, then we have the old best story/best writer problem all over again, which may diminsh the award a bit. The problem would eventually work itself out as people distinglished between a funny story and a body of funny stories, but it would take a while. Then again, one great story, ie Bert Merton, is all it takes to win best writer, so prehaps the point is moot.
As for best idea, I think it suffers from a lack of definition. Is the award supposed to honor: A. A fresh game perspective- ie DS's referee story, B: creative editing, ie Belfast Celts or Jeff's Bottom Heavy story or C. A fresh approach to writing.
