thanks for clearing up. Gonna be hard to do well in europe with a squad 4/6 or however many players short.
still, the challenge doesnt involve european challanges so it doesnt really matter lol.

Does a player from Martinique classify as being French?

As according to Wiki, Martinique is part of France, yet in the game, there's a player capped specifically for Martinque?

It's part of France, the European Union, its currency is the Euro, yeah it can be considered French for this challenge.

One question, to be on the safe side:

I started with Leeds, I can use the current squad to get promoted right as long as I win the prizes with a all Scots/French team?

Yep, that's absolutely right. You only need a fully French/Scottish squad for any season in which you win a trophy which counts towards the challenge goals.
