Although i'm an avid FM player and continually visit these forums, I rarely post discussions. I would however like to raise this discussion post and am interested in the fellow managers opinions and especially SI's response to where this particular issue is headed.
Player ratings
I note that this has been raised in a few posts and generally the consensus appears to support the latest move in FM08 to "tone down" player ratings.
I do not agree with this consensus. I find the new player ratings are probably better defined as diluted rather than toned down. Toned down infers the retention of a modicum of the methodolgy for calculating previous ratings which I don't think is the case. It appears to me that all player ratings are watered down to such an extent that individual ratings are lost in the teams performance.
Now whilst this is and always should be the case
to a certain extent, individual performance is the basis upon which we managers base team selection, recruitment etc. I find the new players ratings are so diluted that determining a players real performance is far more difficult.
Some examples from two games I have competed in.
The same player - a DC. Fitness and morale both good......
Game A: team won 5-2. Rating 8. Player made 7 of only 13 passes, NO tackles, 4 completed headers, 4 intercepts - nothing else. Player was sent off. No key passes etc
Game B: team won 2-0. Rating 7. Player made 27 of 38 passes, 5 headers, 5 key interventions,15 intercepts and even managed 2 SOG - both on target.
Strange isn't it. Now based on those two performance you would be thinking he did far better in game B than game A, yet the rating says otherwise.
btw, this player (Craig Cathcart on loan at AccyStan) has played all season and gained ratings of 7 and 8 for all games, despite the fact that his involvement has differed quite a bit from game to game.
Therefore it appears to me as if the player ratings take the game result into account too much and far more than the individual players performance. I think this is a fault - not a system bug, but a basic in-game problem.
Now don't get me wrong, ratings of 10 (or 4 for that matter) on previous versions of CM and FM were perhaps too frequent, but at least they were a true indication of the players individual performance relative to teammates and others and was therefore more important and useful to me, a manager looking to both reruit and name teams each week.
I have probably spent about 10 times more 'years' in FM/CM Management than i will ever will in 'real life', so the CM world is important to me. Nowadays i never buy and play i always wait for the first patch, so I can't say whether this is something new due to the patch - others i'm sure whould know more, but i do know its very different to all previous versions of FM/CM.
I'm interested in hearing others thoughts and especially SI on why and whether there are any plans to tinker in this are....
