Midtones in what tool? I'm wondering if the color profile and the gamma settings do not have an influence in here...

Maybe will stroker pop up in here...

Do you want to use this dispmap with displace?
Could you elaborate on the process that you want to acheive?

Hi spectre,
I want to use gradient map not displace filter.Actually what I have is an image .Now I want to color only the midtones values and keep the highlight and shadows intact. So I want to develop a gradient where I put color stops at position only for midtones.
I hope this time I was more clear.
(This midtone range thing once solved would help me in lot of stuff. so I am really eager to know how to find it).
I tried to use the info palette.....from the RGB values I get the picture but not the exact range like 33% to 60% is my midtone range..u get it?

Assuming you're working on a greyscale image (the midtone range in RGB can be *very* different for R, G and B separately), you can make your canvas larger, for example at the bottom, and create a rectangular selection in that new space. Set your foreground colour to whatever you decide to be the darkest midtone value, your background to the lightest midtone, and draw a gradient in the selection.

Now choose to select the same tones in the whole pic.

In case you are working on rgb, you will have to use a greyscale ramp and apply this technique to the channels individually.

More elegant tricks may exist, but this works quite good.

Ok, forget about my first post, that was something else (useful, but the wrong answer for your question)

Convert image to Lab Mode and then:

That's what I don't understand. Midtones and colors are two different things. Midtones have to do with lightness.

Nice technique you have. Luckily you have the time to create visual examples on the fly!
Or have you got a 100terabyte HDD filled with all possible questions/answers you already prepared?
[oops]

Serious: good work man!

no, rads, joed gave you an example. that's what I though, you are searching for the VALUES of midtones, not a way to select an approximative midtone range.

I'll try to make some researches, but I don't think that there are fixed numbers. a lot of parameters can influe those numbers.
