It was a bit dissapointing, especially actually beating Belgium, but irc in reality the Czechs were 2-0 up after 20 minutes anyway.

I think Todi Jonsson is retired, he's certainly not in the national squad anymore. I'll check next time I boot the game up

A valiant effort, and you've done extremely well to do that well in a relatively tough group.

I salute you!

KUTGW, this story is great.

UEFA Champions League Group Stage 2009 - Part One

With the opening match in Greece against an Olympiakos side whom it was believed were not that much better than Kobenhavn - if indeed they even were better - there was a good chance to get the three points and get the group phase off to the perfect start. The target here was to get a UEFA Cup place, although it was surely not beyond the bounds of possibility to finish second and progress to the last sixteen.

The match in Greece was fairly dull, with Olympiakos dominating and Kobenhavn producing little creativity and therefore it was no surprise when Rodrigo Palacio grabbed what turned out to be the winner on 66 minutes. Hardly the most effective start for the Danish Faroese outfit and it meant qualifying would probably be a lot tougher now than expected at the start.

If the opening match had been dull, and it had, then the first home match - against Arsenal - was crammed with excitement. Arsenal were the group favourites and completed a relatively easy opening day 2-0 home win over PSV to underline that fact. This was going to be a hugely testing match for Olaf's team, but they started brightly enough and on 24 minutes Aki Joensen fired in a superb free lkick from the edge of the area to give the Danish Champions the lead. Kobenhavn continued to dominate their supposedly more illustrious opponents and right on the stroke of half time, Anders Berg made it 2-0 and the points were looking secure.

It was a rejeuvenated Arsenal side thought that came out for the second half, and with just seven minutes gone they had pulled themselves back into the game. As the Kobenhavn defence looked frail against the Arsenal firepower, so the Londoners threatened time and again but a magnificent goalkeeping performance from Gunnar Nielsen - which saw him named man of the match - kept Arsenal at bay. As time ran out, it seemed Kobenhavn would hang on for a great win, but with three minutes remaining the defence was finally breached as Jose Antonio Reyes snatched a point that in reality the visitors more than deserved.

Having capitulated from two up against Arsenal, it was important that Kobenhavn take all three points at home to PSV if they were to have chance to progress. For most of the first half though, that task didn't seem remotely achievable, but from out of the blue right on the half time whistle, Christian Holst sent the Danes into the break with a valuable lead. Once more it took only seven minutes for the visiting team to level the match, but as the game went on so PSV seemed to run out of ideas and Holst restored the lead on the 69th minute. Four minutes later Anders Berg added a 3rd, and with ten minutes to play Aki Joensen hit another free kick and the points had been secured in sensational style. Right on full time PSV did pull back a second goal to make the scoreline more respectable, but all in a great performance from Kobenhavn to leave them with a decent chance of reaching the elite last sixteen.

UEFA Champions League Group Stage 2009 - Part Two

With the excellent 4-2 win behind them from the first meeting, the 2nd part of the double header with PSV saw Kobenhavn travel to Eindhoven with some confidence and knowing that if they could come away from here unbeaten then the chance of a place in the last sixteen would be that bit greater. Eight minutes into the tie, PSV were ahead and it was already clear they were a different side on their own patch as Kobenhavn struggled to find their form.

On 26 minutes Kim Kallstrom made it 2-0 for PSV and it was already a massive uphill struggle. There seemed little chance of any comeback, and with no-one showing any signs at all of the form from the 1st match for the Danes, so it was no surprise when PSV put the match beyond all reasonable doubt on the 65th minute. It had been a dissapointing evening for Olaf's side, and a severe dent to any chances of progression.

A win over Olympiakos in the final home match was essential if even a UEFA Cup berth was to be attained, but eighteen minutes into the game things looked bleak as the Greeks were awarded a rather soft penalty. As the crowd sighed collectively in resignation, so Gunnar Nielsen proceeded to pull off a quite brilliant save and the sighs turned to cheers of relief. It's not often that Einar Petersen scores goals. Indeed, before this match he had only ever scored one goal in his entire career. On 25 minutes he doubled that total with a quite magnificent 30 yard drive, and eleven minutes later Anders Berg made it two. It seemed that at home the Kobenhavn players were fired up with confidence, and if only they could take even some of that away from home, then they wouldn't be that far away from European success.

Berg added a third goal on 77 minutes, and four minutes from time substitute Peter Damgaard added a fourth to rub the salt right into the Greek wounds. As the table stood going into the final matches, Arsenal had eight points, Olympiakos and Kobenhavn seven a piece and PSV five. It meant that Kobenhavn had to go to London and pick up at least a point against Arsenal to gain entry to the Champions League last 16 elite, but with less than a minute gone that chance seemed remote as Henry sent the Gunners into the lead.

As Arsenal continued to completely outplay the Danish Champions, Jermain Defoe added a brace on 17 & 19 minutes and the match was killed stone dead. As Arsenal eased off, so Kobenhavn still found it impossible to creat any real goal scoring chances and so their Champions League efforts ended with another heavy away loss. A 1-0 win for Olympiakos saw them progress to the last sixteen, and Kobenhavn - despite being a better side than the Greeks - would have to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup, with PSV bowing rather pathetically out of Europe.
