Ayr United clinched the First Division title with two games to go, beating second placed Gretna 3-0 at Somerset Park to put the seal on a fantastic season. Despite the money tóssed around willy nilly there was still a sense of great satisfaction and pride pervading the whole town.
The rest of the league season was played out largely uneventfully, with Celtic keen to protect their top players for the cup final. A bizarre Old Firm match with shadow lineups saw Lynel Kitambala, Alberto Baggio and Alex Pederzoli seal an emphatic away win for Rangers, on the back of a 5-1 win over Hearts. Clearly those back-to-back defeats before the League Cup final required avenging.
Just one more game then before the curtain would fall on another fascinating season in this new Scottish football world.

Celtic's strongest side returned to action in the cup final, but looked sluggish out of the gate, calling into question Ingimarsson's decision to rest his key players in the last couple of weeks of the season.
Trailing 1-0 to Marko Drevensek's 12th minute goal at the break changes were needed. Three were made, but they were insufficient and Lee Miller won the cup for United with a second half strike.
And so yet another season ended with an Old Firm side capitulating in the cup final. Pah.

The Plan
Go one step further on all fronts. Reach the Champions League. Make a profit. Nothing too demanding, huh!
| Well, domestically it was one out of three, but it was by far the biggest story as a big defecit was dramatically turned around to a runaway Championship win. Champions League progress was achieved. As for a profit? That would be asking far too much.

The Plan
Keep up the good work, make a splash in Europe, minimise silly mistakes, succeed. Ingimarsson has the challenge of maintaining success in the face of expectation, which is never, ever, easy.
| Failure. Total, complete, utter. But Henrik scored a barrowload and Pagliuca rolled back the years, so there was something to cheer for.

The Plan
Get to the SPL this year if at all possible, at any cost. Develop the team into a cohesive whole and perhaps make an impact in one of the national cup competitions.
| Got to the SPL, but it will need a squad revamp to challenge up top as required. Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup was as good as the knockouts got.

The Plan
Win the league and preferably qualify for Europe via the Scottish Cup. Not an easy challenge, even for this most unusual of Second Division sides.
| One out of two, 50% is a pass, but throw in the League Cup win and it has to go down as an excellent season. Grade A!

Yeah, disgraceful drawing with Partick and Clyde twice each. Bogey teams, tbh. |

Morag, Aggie, Mary and Betty were relatively pleased with how their little experiment had progressed. Two SPL titles, a League Cup and a couple of Challenge Cups, four promotions and a couple of runs to the Champions League knockout stages were a decent return, but too many now were benefitting.
Each of the four club managers was placed under strict instructions to trim his squad and dump the dead wood. Each, in his own way, attempted to comply. What effect that would have on results remained to be seen.

The Manager

Joél Garçon - Having seen his youth first policy vindicated in style, Garçon wil look to maximise the potential in his squad by adding quality and shedding dead weight.

The Squad

Riccardo Delfino - GK, 18yo, ITA

Lenny Pidgeley - GK, 23yo, ENG - Craig Gordon was unshakable as #1, but after 12 months of refusing to even discuss a new deal he finally opened talks, only to turn around and sign for Aston Villa three days later. Pidgeley then is thrust into the limelight as starter, with the opportunity, finally, to prove what he can do. Delfino is the projected starter a few years down the line, but has already appeared as a substitute in only the second game of the season.

Felice Piccolo - D RC, 23yo, ITA - The right back arrived at the end of last September and cemented the spot as his own over a long, productive season.

Florian Metz - D RL/DM/M RL, 21yo, AUT - The youngster is already a full international and his versatility will doubtless come in handy over the course of a 50-game season.

Andy Webster - D C/DM, 25yo, SCO - The rock around which the defence is founded.

Steven Hammell - D/WB L, 25yo, SCO - The unquestioned dynamo of the whole team.

Andrea Masiello - D C, 21yo, ITA - Benefits from playing alongside Webster. Has undoubted talent.

Yaya Touré - DM/AM C, 24yo, CIV - A revelation last term, adding to his offensive bow as the year wore on. Notched 17 goals in all competitions.

Alex Pederzoli - M C, 23yo, ITA - A versatile and dependable backup.

Alberto Baggio - M C, 20yo, ITA - Established himself as a quality starter last season.

Barry Ferguson - DM, 29yo, SCO - Runs the show from the holding role.

Sasha Iakovenko - AM LC, F C, 20yo, UKR - A revelation. Scored 20 goals and never stopped running.

Malaury Martin - DM, 18yo, FRA - Touted as the next Claude Makelélé.

Boy-Boy Mosia - AM C, 22yo, RSA - Signed from Chelsea after a long loan at Westerlo. Has real potential, backup for now.

Matteo Ardemagni - ST, 20yo, ITA - Hard to believe this guy is just 20. A veteran presence in attack.

Alexandre D'Acol - ST, 21yo, ITA - New signing, looking to replace the likes of Kitambala, Boyd and N'Gog.

Raffaele Palladino - AM L, ST, 23yo, ITA - Thirty eight goals in forty one games is surely all that has to be said?

Didier Drogba - ST, 29yo CIV - A friend for Yaya Touré, and the big, big Bosman capture at Ibrox this year. Expected to score and score often.

The Plan
Retain the title, reach the Champions League Quarter Final, play nice football, basically. It's not like there is much improvement to come after a near-100 point season last time out.
