Heading towards the new season, and the board had some large investments to handle. The youth development improvements were again completed, giving us top facilities and an academy for our first year in the top flight. Stadium expansion of 5000 was completed, and then boosted to a grand total of 21000 to permit us entry into the Premiership. Nick French, our GM, retired and Tony Wilkins was brought in to the position.

And more than anything, Dover revamped its entire squad and to some degree, non-playing staff. Our number one priority in the summer was to find a top-level goalkeeper to give us some consistency in the back, but it was mainly fruitless until into the first games of the season. Every other position, besides striker (Craig still seeming to be the best option available to us), was deemed suitable for improving.

Gone were the wasters who we’d dragged up with us, and in came a new batch of, hopefully, Premiership level squad players. This was financed, despite all the facility improvements, by the TV revenue we received as well as the season tickets sold. Needless to say, we used everything given to us.

One nice bit of news was young Paterson getting a call-up to the Under-21 side for Scotland. (Lamont would later get his first caps for the nation early in the season.)

We wanted to compete for a good position. Avoiding relegation was the primary goal. Cup success was not far from our minds.

Frustrating. Unlucky. Inconsistent. Infuriating.

That’s how I’d describe the first quarter of our first season in the Premiership.

It started out well enough, with a 1-0 road win over Derby. (Dover had seemed to be in good form thanks to a strong tour of Scotland.) Main headed home a cross in the 45th, and the defense didn’t allow a shot in the game.

We continued that into the next with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at home. Although we again didn’t face a shot, this was mainly due to Forest having their keeper sent off for a foul on Craig in the box. The striker converted the penalty easily, though we rarely threatened otherwise. This would be our last league win for several weeks.

Chevalier gave up a goal on pretty much the first shot he saw against Watford in the next game. Completely catching Chevalier out of position, Bater had an easy time giving his side the 1-0 win. Watford keeper Trninic had a very good day minding his nets, in a game where Dover probably played well enough for a draw.

Did I say draw? How about 0-0 against Fulham. Dull and dreary, this game had basically no inspiration from either side. Dover was also hampered by the sending off of O’Neill in the 52nd.

Our goalkeeper worries were again on display against Sunderland, as Chevalier gave up 2 goals on 3 shots, and Sunderland’s keeper Kallaste (stilling making up for his dreadful Cup game seasons ago…) was truly outstanding, stopping 9 shots including 5 from the excellent Lamont (who started due to an injury to Craig.

A 1-0 loss at Everton was a fair result. We were dreadful, despite bringing in keeper Olivier Abiven on a free. (A slight improvement on Chevalier, he is a French player of Cameroonian extraction, though never capped for the African side... thankfully.)

1-1 at Charlton was a fair result, though frustrating to the extreme. Lamont scored in the 45th but the home side scored in the 2nd half after dominating that period.

Home against Leeds, and 1-1 was again the result. The coaches and I began to worry that our midfield showed a complete lack of ability to tackle in the middle of the pitch. This was a very bad sign.

0-0 at home to Bolton was about expected on our current inability to score.

Then came the game against Arsenal. I’ve never been more angry with bad referee decisions in my career. Joly was sent off in the 2nd minute for tussling with Costa Rican forward Vargas. Although the fouls looked about even, Vargas only received a yellow. Then just 1 minute after that a blatant kick from an Arsenal player on Martin Christie (finally signed after several months of attempts) resulted in only a yellow. To put salt in the wound, Vargas ended up scoring the only goal in the 74th minute after a fairly strong defensive showing from our 10-man side. I complained to the FA afterwards. Then I complained again. Then I complained again. Finally on the fourth complaint, the FA agreed the referee was poor. Then I complained again and they fined me and forced me to have a 2 game band. It was worth it.

We went out in the League Cup to Division One Coventry 1-0. A completely indifferent, though disappointing, result. Fabrice Landrin, a brilliant young French defender, got his first start after joining.

During that stretch our best performances had come in the UEFA Cup, which was probably the competition we had the least reason to focus on. A dominating 5-0 aggregate win over AEK in the 1st Round set us up against Norway’s Brann who we defeated in Norway 1-0 thanks to a Craig goal.

The league continued for Dover with an absolutely pointless 0-0 draw at home against Walsall. How pointless was it? Zero shots on target from either side.

Dover crushed Brann at home 4-2 to advance in the UEFA Cup 5-2 on aggregate. An entertaining game with Craig getting a hat-trick.

The next league game seemed doomed for a Dover defeat, and when home side Chelsea scored early to go up 1-0, we had no choice but to throw everything into trying to salvage a point. The inspiration for the comeback came from Paterson who came on after halftime to set up one goal for Craig and then score the winner against a shocked Chelsea side. A very pleasing victory.

No such pleasure in the 1-0 road loss to Blackburn that followed. (The goal came from a great solo strike by their German striker Gunther.)

Back in the UEFA Cup and our match up against Spanish side Malaga looked like a likely end of the road in that competition. Malaga sit in 2nd place behind only the arguably best team in Europe: Barcelona. (In fact, the last team to beat Barcelona in any competition was Malaga.) When Malaga scored a fluke headed goal in the 5th, it seemed like Dover could write off the rest of the day. Much to everyone’s surprise [Thomson scored on a corner, Craig scored just after halftime, then again in the 53rd, and Lamont came off the bench to score a 4th in a shocking 4-1 upset.

Newcastle wasn’t impressed and quickly put us down 2-1 in league play at the Crabble.

Away at Liverpool, a pitiful effort from Thomson, Christie, McNab, Landrin, and Rae somehow didn’t stop us from squeaking out a 1-1 draw. Lamont pounced on a loose ball and scored again. His speed as a substitute continued to help us in the latter minutes.

The return leg in the UEFA Cup against Malaga was a 1-1 draw pushing us into the next round. A nearly complete 2nd choice squad didn’t make much effort for the match.

The game off seemed to spark Craig who showed some excellent league form by scoring twice, including an 80th minute winner to edge us past Ipswich at home.

The less said about the 3-1 loss away at runaway leaders Man Utd, the better. Dover had Rae sent off in the 22nd, and then despite fluking into a lead in the 43rd (Fraser), we were toyed with and destroyed in the 2nd half. Abiven proved that even he had his poor days.

The home game against Tottenham was a big surprise. We won easily 3-0. Whether this was due to Spurs’ keeper Erdem having a terrible day, or Craig’s fairly simple hat-trick, or some combination, the end result was the same.

We got our first back-to-back wins since the beginning of the season with a 1-0 victory over Watford at home. Mark O’Neill got a goal in the 74th for the win.

Three in a row was found on the road at Nottingham Forest. Craig scored off a quickly taken McNab freekick. Then the striker scored again just before halftime. After Forest scored on a direct freekick, Gary MacLeod struck a great half-volley to make it 3-1.

This has been a great read from the start Attjen, and your (team's) form seems to be picking up now. Keep on going.

Though I have to say the succes (and, I imagine, the accompanying praise, wealth, and adoration?) seems to have somewhat dulled your anger and resentment. Unless of course it's only simmering beneath the surface, waiting to burst out when it reaches boiling point again.

The win over Nottingham Forest was on the last day of December. We moved into the new year hoping to maintain our suddenly good league form.

The 0-0 draw at home to Derby wasn’t exactly what we wanted, but we managed to scrounge a point despite not having a very good performance. Joly continues to show confidence at center-back, and had a man of the match performance in this one.

January 7th saw us head to Craven Cottage in Fulham for the FA Cup 3rd Round. Seven minutes into the game and Fulham took the lead off of a corner as James outjumped O’Neill and headed home. We drove for the winner and Craig forced several brilliant saves from Fulham keeper Lucci. In the 38th, Craig’s diving header on a O’Neill cross looked like a tying goal, but Lucci palmed it with one hand and trapped it on the line. We couldn’t find anything through the middle of the pitch as Fulham was doing a fantastic job keeping us off the ball. We switched to a 4-4-2 at halftime by bringing on academy star Cunningham. In the 77th, O’Neill switched the ball across the field to MacLeod and the 31 year old veteran midfielder hammered the tying goal into the upper left corner. We brought on Lamont to go for the win as Fulham starting breaking forward more. McNab went down from injury, and we had no substitutes left we had 7 minutes to play with only 10 men on the pitch. A replay was looking likely until Lamont picked up the ball, ran straight at goal and chipped the ball into the area for Craig. The striker got up to head it, and this time no save was made. The 2-1 win pushed us into the next round. It had been MacLeod who had driven us to the win.

Everyone expected a let-down in the league match against Southampton, but the visitors were in terrible form. Craig used one of his first touches of the game to nutmeg Alsonso, and then ripped a shot into the net for a 1-0 lead. It was all Dover after that as chances flew fast and furious for us, while the visitors could do nothing with their possession. The 2nd goal finally came in the 77th as Craig converted a penalty after falling in the box (somewhat easily, it must be said). Southampton collapsed after that and Lamont came on to score his own brace and Christie scored his first goal for Dover. The 5-0 win was by far the biggest of the season.

On the road at Sunderland and an unexpected goal from the under-performing attacking midfielder position, this time Lavagne, was enough for us to steal a 1-0 victory. The player had an early goal ruled out for a handball and Abiven had one of his better days in the net to deny the home side any come-back.

Early goals from Craig and McCabe sent us to an easy 2-1 win at home over Fulham. MacLeod continued to show impressive form as he set up both goals from the left wing.

In the FA Cup 4th Round, we were drawn away to Blackburn. The home side dominated possession and took the lead in the 63rd with a headed goal. We immediately switched to a 4-4-2 and looked for an equalizer, and Craig scored in the 85th from a MacLeod cross to shock the home side on one of our few solid counter-attacks. A more one-sided game in terms of possession I haven’t seen as Blackburn had 62% of the ball. The replay would come in 10 days.

The 0-0 draw on the road to Leeds was a solid defensive performance and a good point. We showed little offense, but neither did the home side.

Veteran defensive midfielder McCabe struck with a brilliant freekick to give us a 1-0 win at home over Everton, as our good league form was continuing into February. MacLeod had won player of the month award for January, and with 3 wins and a 2 draws I had the best January of the managers.

The replay against Blackburn finally came down to penalties, and Dover prevailed 4-3. Diawara coolly finished his before the Blackburn taker blazed his over. It had been a game we probably should have won in regular time, but Blackburn’s keeper had been stellar. We were through to the 5th round.

A 1-1 draw away at Arsenal was thanks to a great game from Abiven and another fine goal form MacLeod in the 5th. Although the homeside tied before halftime, the game was fairly even in a miserable day of wind and drizzle at Highbury.

The 5th round match-up looked to be in our favor as we had Division One side Preston at home. Young prospect Cunningham was given a start, and repaid the faith with an 8th minute goal. Dover should have sealed the game with another, but Preston keeper Winkler was the best player on the field and kept his team in the game. His offense was nowhere to be found as Preston managed only one shot, which was off-target.

Somehow Dover managed to throw-away a 2-0 lead (a Craig brace) at Walsall. The home side scored two fairly strange goals in the last 20 minutes. It could have been worse for us as Abiven appeared to pull down a Walsall player in the box in the dying seconds, but the referee thankfully didn’t give a penalty.

The draw took us into March, and back into European play. Our match-up in the UEFA Cup 4th round with FC Kobenhavn was fairly favorable considering the other teams (Milan, Chelsea, Werder Bremen, Juventus) we could have been facing. A monthlong injury to Abiven meant we would be relying on Chevalier to carry us into the next rounds. The first leg at home was ours to lose, and we nearly gave away the lead as Chevalier took out a players legs in the box and gave up a penalty. He redeemed himself with a save. MacLeod continued his excellent season by setting up Fraser in the area, and the midfielder buried his shot with no defenders anywhere near him. Craig’s goal in the 67th, his 25th of the season, was well deserved and we clung to a 2-0 win. Kobenhavn had a late goal ruled out for an offside call.

A home game against Charlton was sandwiched in before the return leg, and it took an 84th minute goal from man of the match Joly, his first ever for Dover, to secure the 3 points and continue our climb up the table.

At Kobenhavn the aggregate was never in doubt as the home side rarely threatened and Robertson struck the bar with a freekick for Dover. We were through to the next round and would face German club Lubeck in the quarterfinals.

The FA Cup quarterfinal match-up against Division One W.B.A. was played at the Crabble and after Craig scored in the 13th minute we relied on strong games from Chevalier, McCabe, and Diawara to move into the next round.

Away at Lubeck, Dover found themselves down a goal at the 28th minute after the home side struck a fine goal from a team move. Craig was having none of that, and beat 3 defenders on his own before tucking home a shot low into the corner to tie the game up in the 29th. Ten minutes later and Dover had the lead as Craig’s beautiful half-volley beat the Lubeck keeper to give us a 2-1 lead. The 2nd half was a scrappy affair with Christie scoring a header to go 3-1, before Lubeck converted a penalty after a Joly foul to take it to 3-2. Two solid chances from Paterson came close, but a 3-2 road win was good enough for us to take into the 2nd leg.

Craig was now showing the form of one of the best strikers in the UK as he carried us back from an early penalty goal from Bolton with two headed goals to give us a 2-1 win on the road in the 30th game of the league season. We hadn’t lost in league play since the Manchester United loss in mid-December.

Lubeck showed no belief that they could overcome the 3 away goals form the first leg and we cruised into UEFA Cup semifinals with a goal a piece from Craig and Lamont for an impressive 5-2 aggregate win. Our shocking European run was now blessed with a semi-final match-up against Juventus.

With 8 games to go in the league, we welcomed back Abiven from injury for the game at home to Blackburn. He played very well on his return, but the offense could not break down the defensive shell of the visitors and we had to settle for a point in a 0-0 draw.

The next game was at Juventus.

Pre-game

Welcome to the Delle Alpi, Torino, where we await the beginning of the first leg between Italian giants Juventus and English club Dover. This is the UEFA Cup semi-final first leg with the winner on aggregate facing the winner between Chelsea and Schalke in the UEFA Cup final in May.

Although everyone knows Juventus, and they seem the heavy favorite in this match-up, this hasn’t been the best of seasons from the club has it Eric?

No, Max, it hasn’t. This Juventus club has really been struggling in Serie A this year, and was barely staying above the relegation zone just a few weeks ago. They seem to be turning it around now, however, and have won 3 in a row. They’ve made it to this round with a strong 3-1 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid in the quarters.

They’ll be lining up in a 5-3-2. Who do you see as the key men for the Italian side?

Well, there is now doubt in my mind that their Romanian captain Christian Savu is the heart and soul of the back line, a great leader and organizer there. The rest of the squad is still one of the highest quality teams in Europe, with strikers Rodriguez, a French international, and Silva, a Uruguayan international, being considerable threats. Their Argentine playmaker Juan De Lemos is considered one of the best in the world.

Dover will likely be playing in a 4-5-1. Thoughts about this team?

An interesting group - this squad. Built, some who say very controversially, from only French and Scottish players. Few would have expected them to be at this stage of the competition, but their aggregate scores speak for themselves: 5-0, 5-2, 5-2, 2-0, and 5-2. The last of these results came against German side Lubeck in the quarterfinals. There is no secrecy about who their key player is, Michael Craig, their star Scottish striker who has already shattered the goal-scoring record in this competition with 12 tallies to his name.

An impressive record indeed, Eric. What are your impressions of the rest of the team?

A solid workmanlike bunch. Defensively this is an excellent squad that rarely gives up goals. Their biggest difficulty is scoring, although their European record this year argues against that. The importance of good wing play from MacLeod and O’Neill can’t be disputed, nor should we overlook the need for their keeper Abiven to be on top form today… Otherwise, it could be a miserable two legs for this English side…

3rd Minute

We’re underway here… with Juventus controlling the pace in the first few minutes… the ball moves up the pitch to De Lemos… he strolls forward… oh, a quick rasping shot across the goal!

Fantastic save from Abiven

De Lemos testing the keeper with that drive, and the Dover man was up to the challenge.

Why have Cameroon not capped this player?

4th Minute

Juventus recover, a pass into the Dover area… Silva tumbles to the floor in a collision with Joly.

The referee is having none of that Max. He’s letting play continue..

21st Minute

Speranza on the ball now for Juventus… coming down the right… McNab tries to slow him down… crashing shot from Speranza! Punched clear… It’s still loose… Rodrigues may get to it… No, Abiven reacts a touch faster and smothers the ball at the striker’s feet.

Abiven did fantastically well there… his team needed a good game from him today, and they are getting it…

27th Minutes

Juventus controlling the ball well here… passing around the edge of the Dover area… Silva… Mauro… squared to Speranza who take it into the area… Shot!

Oh… he’s bounced that off the far post!

Abiven again smothers the ball at Rodrigues’ feet….

29th Minute

Speranza again, into the area for Rodrigues… Over the bar!

He’s going to want that one back…

36th minute

Juventus captain Savu has the ball… a chip forward for Silva… He chests it down with Joly on his back… A quick turn, a shot from well outside!

Brilliant save from Abiven

What a shot by Silva… fantastic attempt on the turn…

40th minute

Juventus have a chance to counter now… bad ball from Fraser… Mauro… to Speranza, who has been excellent today… a one-two pass with Silva… a chip forward to Mauro… he nods it into the path of Silva… He’s free into the area… Goal. Goal for Juventus.

What an incredible team move from the Italian side… Brilliant flowing soccer… Dover were torn apart by that…

55th minute

Diawara’s done well there to cut that pass out… Silva would have been free to try for another goal…

71st minute

The 2nd shot in 2 minutes for Silva… and another brilliant save from Abiven

72nd minute

Craig trying to create something for his side now… he’s beaten Battaglia… He’s trying to go by Michell… fantastic tackle…

73rd minute

Dover making some substitutions here… Lamont, Paterson, and Rae all coming on…

It seems likely McIntosh is switching to a 4-4-2 to try and find a goal in these last minutes…

79th Minute

McCabe into the area for Paterson… a quick volley! Good save… Novak had to be on his toes for that one…

Clever attempt from the young Scot…

Full time: Juventus 1 Dover 0
Juventus had dominated the game from start to finish. They had 60% percent possession out shot us 8 to 1. Made 90% of their tackles, and won more than 60% of their headers. Our unbeaten streak was over at 23 games. Only Abiven , Joly, and Diawara prevented the score from being much worse.
