It will once I get a few more bits and pieces together. Would have helped if Raptor had organized the archives better

The Awards – A Brief Introduction

Over the years the CMS awards have thrown up their fair share of joy, despair, delight and controversy. In future chapters we'll looking into a few of the more interesting categories, such as Funniest Writer, Best Story, the often maligned – and probably quite rightly so as I never won it – Best Title, and a few more besides. But for now, a brief overview of the awards of the CMS in order.

Of course awards are always controversial. Its really only a matter of opinion who the best writer – benny, Peacemaker7, Gino, HD, Flipsix3, Bobbev (and I better stop there in case some people get offended at being left out :p) – Some people like one, some like another, some like someone else and then someone else likes a writer that no-one has ever heard of. People come along and declare a story as the 'best they have ever read' – yeah that's why we're all successful, rich authors isn't it – and then the awards come round and that particular effort isn't even mentioned. It's just people's opinion, yet it can cause so much controvery, so much joy, so much pain. And over the years, just like the Oscars and Emmys, and the Sports Personality of the Year, the awards on the forum have brought with them their own sense of controvery and joy.

There have, over the course of the seven years of this forum, been three different awards. Maollelujah ran his own awards night for a couple of years, and very successful it was too. Winning a 'Mao' was something to be proud of, but eventually Mao gave up and that particular awards occasion died. Later on Peacemaker7 ran an awards night of a very different sort, rewarding – if thats the right word – the very worst of the CMS, but all done in a very lighthearted way of course. Sadly the Grumpies – as they were known – were only ever run once, having come to the scene rather late on and the truth is we just don't have the personalities on the forum anymore that we used to.

But of course the real highlight of the CMS year (Yes I know it's FMS now, but for the sake of my sanity I will refer to CMS.) is the CMS Awards themselves. Started in 2000, the awards have been highly successful and have brought out the best, and at times the worst, in the forum as well as throwing up a few anomalies – such as why on earth did it take writers of the quality of HD and Gino so long to actually win one. There have always been arguments over who is the best – although in fairness CMS was, and isn't about being the best – and although the awards have gone about giving people the opportunity to decide for themselves who the best were, the results have not always been greeted with universal approval. Famously, after Peacemaker7 ran riot at the 2001 awards, picking up no less than eight trophies, HD kicked up a huge fuss because his favourites of the time had not won what he expected. Yet who can argue against the wishes of the majority.

We may still argue about who is the greatest footballer of all time, even if a poll was to place Maradona ahead of Pele. Those who think Pele was the greatest would still insist he was, but the records would show it was Maradona. Such is life, without diversity of opinion life was be so very boring indeed. At the end of the day though, we might not have always agreed with the winners of the various awards over the years – which we shall look at in more depth later – but as they were chosen by the majority if the forum members of the time, we can't really argue with them. Well at least not without looking a total moron.

The depth of the CMS forums over the years can perhaps been seen in the sheer number of people who have been honoured over the last seven years. No less than sixty six people have won awards of some description over the years, and I'm not even going to begin to count the numbers who were nominated! And although we will look a but more indepth later, a few things that jump out from the whole thing. Like Spurzzgrrl, who was and still is the only female to ever win a CMS award, like the fact that Jack O'Sullivan won the most missed user, like the fact that it took HD SEVEN years to finally get an award.

You can read all the award winners and check out the various ceremonies here: http://www.zelenazvezda.com/fms/awards/awards.htm

And just for the record, a table of CMS all time awards totals, because some people really need reminding (Don't they Flippers )

Peacemaker7 22Raptor 13Flipsix3 10Bobbev 9Faramir 7DixieFlatline 5Terk 4King Jeff 4Displaced_Se 4benny 4Spav 4Flann O'Brien 4Andrew Downi 4Educated Hick 3Nickeygreenan 3EllG 3Spurzgrrl 3Charnley 2Chesterfan2 2silver_blue 2Brian of Naz 2BrianW 2Gino 2ghostwriter 2HD 2Mikezone13 2Donners 2OMDave 2Harry Kure 2Maollelujah 2

That list of people with two awards is quite a prestigious one.

Be interesting to see the percentage of multi-award winners who won all their prizes at one awards - 'one year wonders' as it were....

Off the top of my head, of people who won more than two awards I think spav, flann and nickygreenan won all theirs at one ceremony. A few of the 2's did, but it looks like more multi's won them over more than one ceremony.

Correct, PM7. All 4 of my awards were in 2005.

Nice to read some of the history before my arrival on these shores.

This is a great idea PM, good luck with bringing everything together. I can't believe I only ever won one award, I was very under rated

Thanks Spav, nice to see you

Hopefully get some more of this posted during this week, its not as if the history is going anywhere and I think this could take a while. I'm in no rush anyway, its not as if you can win an award for non-fiction

The Characters – An Overview

The funny thing about CMS is this. Football has over the years produced many famous, well loved personalities. A lot of these people are, by the fact they are represented in the database of the game, in a certain way involved in both the game and within the framework of many, many stories. Indeed, some famous real life footballing personalities may well have appeared in many stories, some with famous fictional deeds and many more simply as a by-line in the squad lists. And it is true to say that a few real life personalities have made their mark, albeit unwitting on their part, on the consciousness of the forum. If it has such a thing.

Real life people can become just as 'famous' in forum terms as their fictional counterparts. Think of Brian Clough, who unwittingly became a CMS forum legend many moons after his death, thanks to a simply throw away line in a story that so angered on particular forum reader that a huge furore erupted, that lasted for a fair long while. And there are of course those real life players who make an impact on the game, Daniel Braathen, Alessio Cerci – the so called cheat players, but still making their way into many CMS line ups and becoming heroes over time. Yet it is not in real life that the true heroes of the CMS have been found, but rather in the creations of the writers themselves.

It is true that a CMS legend such as Jason Young for instance, actually does exist in the real world of football. It is also true that his exploits in the CMS universe so far outweight his actual real world achievements that such a person, though existing in real time, has entered into the anals of fictional hero. On the whole though, such transformations are rare and it is from the mind of the writers that true heroes, the true legends of this forum indeed have arisen. Indeed such is the power of the imagination that some of these legends have almost come to seem real to us, and their achievements are every bit as meaningful as those of the real life footballing personalities we love and hate. We could probably spend hours and hours devoted to such luminaries, and if truth be told they probably deserve far more coverage than many, if indeed not all, of the writers on here.

Everyone of course will have their own particular favourites, not counting their own creations because that is nepotism or something else highly illegal. From Rushind Aneka to Herr Sprey (think about it), from Billy Bowls to Cheery McChirpy, the characters have simply rolled in. It is probably fitting thought to remember the more famous characters, the likes of Dave Green, who set the fictional world, and CMS alight and even had the audacity to win character of the year twice and nearly made it a hattrick, and indeed has himself won more awards than HD :p Green probably 'starred' in more stories than any other personality on the forums, until people were getting sick to the back teeth of him. There are though rumours that he might be making a come back.

Bert Merton, who led his England squad to World Cup glory (booo!), became so famous that he even received a Knighthood for his efforts. As Bert was your typical English gentleman, so Stan McCabe was your typical Jock, who was moulded in the shape of many famous Scots managers of the so called real world. And there are more. Mark Frost, Tinmar Ollien and not forgetting of course the truly amazing Clayton. There are more characters out there. Too many too mention, some of whom I personally have probably not read, but you have. Some of whom may well not even have been created yet. We all have our favourites, who were yours?

(This is a wee chance to chip in with some of your own memories of famous CMS characters, think of it as an interactive section )
