5 August

Sky Sports News

Sunderland signing Benoit Costil today completed his loan move to Hartlepool.

Costil will be at Hartlepool till the end of the season.

Sunderland v Barcelona match has been chosen to be viewed on Sky Sports on the 12th.

7 AugustI arrived at training. Tony was taking them on a run, where there the players would be split into two groups. It would be a race and the winners would get the next two days of training off. Half an hour later, I saw Tony run round the corner out of the trees. "Boss, Boss!!!" "What's wrong Tone?!" "It's Darren,(Ward) he's gone over on his ankle!" "WHAT?!" "I think he's broken it!" "F**k Off" "No, seriously boss!" "S$%T!!!"

Half an hour later, I stood in the physio's room. The news was not good. Pete (Friar) told me he would be out for at least 4 months. "Ah F**k."

"What are we gonna do, we've got no money left, Niall wont give me more!" I excliamed

"Well, we'll have to recall Fulop then." Tony's Reply

"Nah, I dont rate him at all."

"Well, get the kid back in."

"Who? Trevor(Carson)"

No boss, Benoit."

"Benoit, BENOIT! Youre joking, he's nowhere near good enough though."

"We've got Craig anyway, he'll only be back-up."

"I'm not sure though, he's just gone to Hartlepool."

"Well, Ipswich are playing on Tuesday, they have Alexander in goal. Send a scout to watch him in action and if you like him we can send young Benoit back to Hartlepool."

"S'pose, you get on the phone to David Collier (Scout). Tell him to go to Stoke on tuesday. Actualy Tone, we'll go to Hartlepool and watch them against Millwall see how Benoit gets on."

"Ok boss, I'll phone David then get us tickets. Right Cya, Boss."

"I cya Tone."

Nightmare I thought to myself, just what I needed, as soon as the left back crisis is out of the way another one comes along. Had'nt played a competitive game and the pressure of management was getting to me already.

9 August

I took to my seat just as Millwall kicked off. It got a little better on the 21st minute when Hackett, got away past Robbie Elliott on the right and he crossed one in over everyone's head... apart from Byfield who hit it first time accross goal but Costil dived at full length to keep it out and tip it round the corner. The Hartlepool fans sounded their appreciation for Costil. Tony looked at me as if to say told you so. I nodded at him. Then just before a half time a long clearance by Mickey Nelson put Monkouse in who slotted it into the goal. 1-0 to Hartlepool. Right from the restart Millwall attacked as they wanted to level before half time. Byfield hit it to the centre back, who as Mickey Nelson did, launched one long right into Costil's path who tried to hit it back up the pitch but give it straight to Smith who sprinted onto it and square it to Byfield who tried to chip Costil from 30 yards but Costil managed to tip it over the bar. This kid had something special. Half Time: Hartlepool 1-0 Millwall.

Second half got off quicky with a booking for Monkhouse straight away as he dived into Smith. Millwall got a corner, Dunne whipped it in to the near post where a glancing header by Doyle, headed for the net before Costil got fingertips to it and knocked it onto the post, only for Zak Whitbread to tap the rebound in. 1-1. Costil made one more save from a Byfield shot from the corner of the penalty area. In the end it finished 3-1 to Hartlepool with Monkhouse winning and scoring a penalty in which the Millwall goalscorer was sent off. A piledriver of a free-kick from James Brown put Hartlepool 3-1 up. Benoit really impressed me tonight, he certainly will be getting recalled. This kid could even challenge Craig for a place in the starting eleven. Now from watching Millwall to watching Barcelona.

Sunderland v Barcelona

Line Ups;

Sunderland;

------------Gordon----------------

Halford--McShane--Anderson--Assou-Ekotto

--------------Etuhu---------------

Edwrds-------Whitehead------Richardson

--------E.Johnson----Chopra

Barca; Valdes,Belletti, Puyol, Abidal, Zambrotta, Deco, Motta, Messi, Gudjohnsen, Ezquerro, Eto'o

Kick Off: The lads were greeted to fireworks and balloons as they came on to the pitch. The fans were on their feet clapping the team and also the opponent, after all it's not everyday you get to face Barcelona is it?

First chance of the game came on the 45th second as Messi got the better of Assou-Ekotto and whipped it in low and the quick turn and shot from Gudjohnsen beat everyone apart from record signing Craig Gordon who made a brilliant save befor Nosworthy got it away. Tone did all the shouting on the sideline, I wrote down notes on the lads.Gudjohnsen had another go at goal in the eighth minute when Puyol fed Messi out wide, inside to Motta, past Etuhu and into Deco's feet, who played it to Gudjohnsen who looked up and shot and skimmed the post. Gordon seemed content to leave it. Nosworthy beat Eto'o in the air, only for the ball to come straight back to them and Eto'o to nutmeg Nosworthy and Gordon pulled off an amazing one-on-one save, before he could pick the rebound up. Eto'o couldnt get past the keeper and took another shot from the edge of box but Gordon dived the length of the goal, to tip it for a corner. Eddie Johnson had one of the few chances of the half for us, when he headed a corner accross the six yard box only for no-one to flick it in. Eddie Johnson managed to get ahead of Puyol but he squared it for Whitehead who only had to tap it in the net, he smacked it and Valdes dived diognally accross the six yard box and tipped it over the bar. Then on the 44th minute, Whitehead hit the post after good work from Eddie Johnson down the left played it infield onto the edge of the box. The half time whistle went. Sunderland 0-0 Barca

I told them that they were showing a spirited performance and I was thrilled with them, I brought on Cardenas on the right for Edwards who had done well against Belletti, while Bendtner came on for a dissapointing Chopra.

On the 47th minute Barcelona should of been ahead. A throw from Belletti fed Eto'o who faced away from goal on the edge of the box, snap shot was saved low to Gordon's right, but then Deco following in placed it but Gordon pounced on it and grabbed a hold of it. Then when Sunderland went to break Nyron lost it to Gudjohnsen who was one-on-one, trying to go round Gordon didnt work as Gordon leaped on top of the ball. Then on the 60th minute something amazing happened. The ball was swept in from the corner and E.Johnson rose at the near post and headed the ball above Valdes into the net to send The Sunderland faithful into raptures. In the 68th minute Eto'o got away again and this time the net was hit. Gordon pushed it onto the post only for Eto'o to follow it up and make it 1-1. At this time I brought on, O'Donavon, Wallace, Anderson, Stokes and Leadbitter for E.Johnson, Nosworthy, Richardson, Whitehead and Assou-Ekotto. Luckily for the fans, the game was not yet finished. Halford's long throw was headed down by Bendtner and Stokes crossed it to Cardenas who smashed in a volley and it soared towards the top corner....Only for the post to get in the way again! But this was good stuff from Sunderland. With 12 minutes left Eto'o rolled Anderson and struck another shot at goal and it was again saved by Gordon and from the resulting corner came the decisive moment in the match; whipped in and Gordon catches
and sprays the ball out wide to O'Donovan to go forward and be brought down by Milito, Halford sized the angles up from about 35 yards. He shot instead of crossed and "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!" could be heard all round the stadium. I was on my feet clapping and cheering along with the fans. That was the end of the game apart from one last chance for Barca, the corner came in and Valdes headed it straight at Gordon, he kicked to Stokes and he shot from the half way line, just wide. The whistle went when Valdes took the goal kick. Brilliant Display from the lads.

Sky's Man Of Match: Eddie Johnson

My MoM: Craig Gordon

Hereford (A) 4-0
Barnsley (A) 1-0

Tony reported back to the Academy today from Romania. He watched the England U-21's and Kieran was playing and named captain, he set up two goals as England won 5-2 away.

David Collier watch the Scotland U-21's against France, where Ross Wallace cam of the bench and set up a goal, unfortunately France scored in the 87th minute to win 2-1.

Clive Clarke has had three loan bids accepted for him from me. I dont think Clive is Premiership Quality, so will be looking to get rid.

Press Conference

Q: So marc, you've got the fans against you, some players believe you dont have enough experiecne, how are you feeling about tommorow's match?

A: Well, the lads are weel up for the match and are confident. I have total confidence that we can turn Newcastle over.

Q: Do you know what your team will be tommorow?

A: I've got an idea.

Q: can we have it?

A: I'm new to management, but I'm not stupid

Q: Do you feel you can overcome the odds against Newcastle and take something from the game?

A: Why Of Course, I believe we can wi every game we play

Q: We've got it down that Roy O'Donovan has gone to Hartlepool on loan, is that right? If so, why?

A: It's correct. I've sent him there to get some experience as he has just come over from playing in Ireland all his life, he can become a star player for us in years to come.

Gillete Soccer Saturday

We're only fourty five minutes away from the Premiership kick-off between local rivals, Newcastle and Sunderland, Sam Allardyce has warned his opposition Marc Allan that he is in for a rough test, and that Allardyce expected to triumph over Sunderland.

Sunderland have a full squad to pick from apart from Kieran Richardson who fractured his arm yesterday in trraining. He will be out for a month into the season. Now we're going to take a break and if you want to watch the Newcastle match, turn over to Sky Sports 1. We'll be back after the break.

Newcastle v Sunderland

I was not happy with Kieran's injury, he had been one of the major parts of the team as the Playmaker.
So here was the line up;

---------------Gordon------------

Halford--McShane--Anderson--Assou-Ekottto

---------------Etuhu-------------

Stokes-------Whitehead(C)-----Wallace
| |
\/-------Bendtner--Johnson----\/

Subs; B.Costil, N.Nosworhty,D.Murphy, C.Edwards, M.Chopra

Sunderland get us underway

9th Minute: "Halford under pressure here, clears it long and oh great control by Bendtner, but what can he do here, back to Stokes deep on the right, he looks up and he's seen JOHNSON, OH WHAT A BALL, GREAT CONTROL BY JOHNSON ANDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!! GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! EDDIE JOHNSON HITS THE NET AND MARC ALLAN IS JUMPING UP AND DOWN ON THE SIDELINE! HE KNOWS HOW MUCH THIS MEANS TO THE FANS"

What a start, you could even hear the fans singing "We are top the league, say We are top the League" I laughed and shook Tony's hand and hugged Michael (Chopra) who had a broad grin across his face.

23rd Minute: EBoue will look to hit the free kick, he has AND OH WHAT A STRIKE!!!!!! GORDON COULD DO NOTHING 1-1!! GREAT GOAL!

No worries, No worries I thought. We're playing the better of the football, we'll be alright. It was unbelievable how right I would turn out to be!

29th Minute: Oh Jonson, this lad has tallent, goes past Geremi and flicks it to Wallace on the left, back inside to Wallace, one-two with Bendtner and WHITEHEADDDDDDD OOHHHHH! So close!

42nd Minute: Smith now, back to goal, quick shot, held by Gordon down low, good attempt, good save

43rd Minute: Eboué flicks it over Assou-Ekotto and smacks it to the back post where Milner's waiting, GOOD SAVE! Milner it true and hard down low to the keeper's right. Gordon dived and turned it round the post!

Half Time: Newcastle 1-1 Sunderland

I told the lads that the showing that they were putting on was brilliant and told them to go get a result for the fans.

Newcastle get the game re-started.

60 Minute: Martins coming forward, round McShane, past Ekotto, oh what a run and what a tackle by Etuhu! He looks up and hits a 40 yard pass to Wallace, oh he cant bring it down. Newcastle throw. Can I just say, what a game Etuhu is having. He's a brilliant shield sitting there in front of the back four.

68th Minute: Solano looking to go past Etuhu, No chance, Etuhu comes forward with the ball and finds Stokes on the right, back infield to Whitehead, aims one for Johnson just outside the box, well played Eboué there. Got the ball away easily but Assou-Ekotto picks it up and puts it through Solano's legs. Assou-Ekotto now plays it forward to Johnson, OH WHAT A FLICK THROUGH TAYLOR's LEGS, HE'S IN THE BOX! TO THE LEFT OF THE GOAL! WILL HE SHOOT! AW, HE'S SQUARED IT IN THE SIX YARD BOX! BENDTNERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2-1 2-1 2-1 2-1 2-1 2-1!!!!!!! Nicklas Bendtner buries the ball past Given and Sunderland regain the lead.

My head was killing through this roller coaster game! We were back in the lead! Now we had to defend! "COME ON LADS, KEEP IT TIGHT!!" I screamed. Nicklas' smile was possibly the biggest one I've ever seen.

Double Substitution on 85th minute for Sunderland: Chopra, Nosworthy ON ---> Johnson, Bendtner OFF

90th Minute: Martins now, can he pull something out from his sleeve, knocks it past Halford, oh thats a foul. Yellow card as well. Solano whips it in but Etuhu smacks it away but Martins blocks it and it goes to Rozenhal, but Etuhu tackles him and smacks it away AND THERE'S THE WHISTLE! SUNDERLAND WIN 2-1!!! A FANTASTIC GAME OF FOOTBALL HERE. Sam Allardyce will not be pleased! But I can tell you this now! Marc Allan will be loved by all fans from now on!

I shook hands with Sam and everyone on their bench. Then the players then it was party time! Our fans were still there. The lads and I were over in the corner of the stadium clapping the fans support as they sang various songs such as "We always win 2-1" and "Wise men Say". And also the best one "Marc Allan's Red White Army!!!!"

MoM: Dickson Etuhu

Rightly so as well, what a day! And we can also say We are top of the league! Probably not for long, but you never know!
