"Yes, is the office of Mr. Harvey's agent?" came the voice down the phone.
"Yes but it's Mr. Harvey speaking. What can I do for you?" I said glancing around my Living room / office.
"Well , I was just phoning to ask you whether you had ever considered going back into management?" And I had to admit I had but thought no on would ask me after the hash I made of my short spell at Fiorentina.
"Are you offering me a job?" I inquired.
"Yes, on behalf of Club Brugge. If you accept tell me now and I'll have you a flight to Brugge by Wednesday."
Wow, I thought, they certainly don't waste any time do they. I needed a job in football anyway. Being out of the sport for so long was so upsetting. The word had already formed on my lips.
By the next saturday I had just attended my first press conference after becoming the boss. I was just reading my e-mails on my new state-of-the-art laptop. I notice I have been given 137k as a transfer budget. I picked up the phone.
"What the hell am I meant to do with that? £137k. What a joke. I want more money!"
And I want to give you it Dan" The chairman, Michel DHooghe, said. But we just can't afford it at the moment."
I just slammed down the phone. I decieded to go and check out my players down at the training ground.
I had two keepers, Stijn Stijnen, who looked like a good goalie, a good shot stopper who looked like he was gonna be my No.1.
I also had Glenn Verbauwhede who, as Belgium's U21 goalie ws more than good enough as back-up.
In defence I had a Canadian Lb called Klukowski who was a decent enough player who called play Lb, Cb, Lwb and Lm. He looked as though he was gonna be my Lb with my other potential Lb, Gvodenovic, more suited to a Dm. I decieded to play Clement and Dreesen as my Cb's. One for his heading ability and the other for his ability to tackle well and spread the play.
