Rep Power: 0 | Athletico Madrid – Rise to the top
BREAKING NEWS
There’s some breaking news reaching us here at the sky sports news room, Goergie Thompson has more……
“Athletico Madrid have announced the departure of their manager Javier Aguirre with immediate effect. Mr. Miguel Ángel Gil terminated Aguirre’s contract and sought to look for a replacement.”
Guilemme Ballague has more news for us.
“Morning Guilemme, do you have anymore news for us on the situation at the Vicente Calderon?”
“Morning, some very interesting news coming from the red half of Madrid. Manager Javier Aguirre had his contract terminated due to him giving the board an ultimatum to make more funds available. With the club in some financial trouble, Mr. Miguel Ángel Gil had no choice but to terminate Aguirre’s contract. This is very unusual as Javier Aguirre had been doing a good job with los colchoneros with limited funds but no board is going to be held ransom over transfer funds and the manager had to go”
“Interesting, any news on his successor?”
“Not at the moment, we hear that they are waiting for the right candidate to come about and they would take it from there. Apparently, they are looking for a young manager that has the credentials to take the club to the next level. They have a few good players, including club captain Fernando Torres who will surely leave should the club under perform in the coming season. From what I understand, we should hear something in the coming week”
“Thanks Guilemme, with that back to you at the studio.”
I had seen this breaking news on sky sports news and thought it would be a good idea to apply. Being unemployed and just having completed my uefa badges, I thought it to be the right time to take a plunge and look for a club. I thought this would be a good challenge as they have limited funds but have a good squad with good youngsters so hopefully I will be given the opportunity to show what I can do.
“Amit………..AMIT….phone for you, it’s from Spain so hurry up” my sister came running to give me the phone as she knew it was important.
“Hello…….”
“Hello, it’s Miguel Ángel Gil here……”
“Oh my ………”
“Hello to you too! I have you’re cv here, it seems you are interested in taking the vacant managers job here at the Vicente Calderon?”
“y….e…s…s, sir, I…..am very interested” barely being able to speak.
“I’d like to meet you in person. Would you be able to come to Madrid tomorrow? I can arrange everything for you, all you have to do is get to the airport.”
“Yes of course, I will be there at 8am?” I said stupidly.
“Well you go at 8am, but you’re flight is at 12noon, so I will meet you at the stadium when you arrive?”
With that said I prepared to fly out to Madrid. I didn’t know much about los colchoneros apart from the fact they had a superb stadium and a huge fan base. I know their former manager was Javier Aguirre and one of the other managers was a 1994 world cup finalist Arrigo Sachi. I knew I had a lot to live upto….

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
I got to the Madrid airport at approx 1pm local time. I looked around and there was a sign with my name on it. Asking if the chap was a representative of Athletico Madrid, he replied “si, senoir”. He didn’t look too happy but I didn’t know why this was, I assumed he was having a bad day.
With that the chauffeur took me right outside the Vicente Calderon.
“What a magnificent stadium” I thought.
Walking inside I was greeted by Mr Gil who lead me to what seemed like a board room with a few people already sat around a huge table.
“Welcome to the Vicente Calderon Mr Dey. Any problems with you’re flight?”
“No, everything was perfect, apart from the chauffeur, he seemed a bit down….”
“That’s because he has just found out today that he has lost his job as he was Javier Aguirre’s chauffeur and since Javier has left us, there is no need to keep his chauffeur.”
“True, it must be hard for him to find out he has no job” I replied. “that’s a bad way to start the day, but enough of that, what is the situation here in Madrid”
“Well, we are currently looking for a manager to take care of first team affairs. We believe that person to be you. We just want to ask you a few questions before we go any further.”
“Sure, fire away….”
“We would like to ask where you see the club in the next 2 years if you were to take charge here?”
“Well if I was fortunate enough to take charge here, I would like to see us playing in europe and challenging for a champions league place. I know that would be hard with the likes of Barca, Real and Valencia but I feel this club needs to be playing champions league football, every season and then maybe we can challenge for the league. But that’s a more long term plan, by no means do I think we will win the league in my 1st 2 seasons here.”
“Glad to hear that, we also feel the club need to be playing in europe if we are to advance to the next level. We need a manager who can not only deliver this but also bring through the clubs younger players in the process as the transfer funds will be limited. Do you feel you can work under a tight budget?”
“Yes, yes I do. I feel we have a lot of talented players here who can take the club a long way but with some signings in the summer, we should have a squad but I would need to have a word with the coaches and see the state of the squad”
“Thank you, we will conclude the meeting there. If you have any questions please feel free, otherwise if you can give us a few minutes. We will call you when we are ready, feel free to help yourself to some tea or coffee”
“Thanks”
I walked outside the board room. I was feeling more nervous than ever before a bit like when I met sir Alex for the first time. He is my inspiration and is the sole reason I am here in madrid today.
Time just seemed to slow down before I heard someone coming out.
“Mr Dey, we are ready for you now”
With that I walked into the room. Mr Gil was saying how much of a pleasure it was to meet with me and get some ideas of where I feel the club should be. I wasn’t really listening but just waiting for ‘at this moment, you have been unsuccessful’. But what Mr Gil said struck me by surprise…
“Mr Dey we would like to offer you a one year contract worth £27k a week, we will also be able to offer you a transfer budget of £6m”
“I can’t believe it, you mean….”
“Yes, you have the job, congratulations. I hope to work with you for years to come but due to you’re lack of managerial experience, we could only offer a one year contract. We expect the club to hold onto a mid table position so we could use this season as a platform to build on. I will introduce you to the players and coaches tomorrow so you can go and rest, you’ll need to be here for the press conference I’ve arranged for tomorrow”
With that I left the stadium, still bewildered with what just happened.
“Amit Dey, Atletico Madrid manager, what a dream!!” I thought.

Sky Sports News
Breaking news
“News is coming through that athletico madrid have announced their new manager. We can cross live to the Vicente Calderon Stadium to get more from the madrid chairman Mr Gil”
“We are here today to announce the appointment of Amit Dey as our new manager. We feel him to be the best candidate we have seen in the last week or so and are delighted to have such a talented manager at our club.”
“Question for Mr Dey, as a novice english manager with no managerial experience, what do you think you can offer such a huge club in the capital of Spain?”
“I feel I can bring a lot to this club, fresh ideas, a new approach but most of all I bring determination and motivation to what I feel is a sleeping giant. I just hope I can live up to the expectations of the fans and board and deliver in such an important period in the clubs history.”
“We have to cut this press conference short as we have some more breaking news. News reaching us is that AC Milan have made an offer worth £20m for athletico madrid forward and talisman, Fernando Torres. It will be interesting to find out what happens with this.”
This offer was new news to me as I only found out about it via the news. My first decision would be whether to keep our best player or sell as we could do with the money to bolster the squad.
After the press conference, I went down to meet the coaches and the players. I watched them train for the 1st time and had been surprised at the quality on display. My 1st job would be to assess the squad and decide on which position we need to strengthen.
Leo Franco – GK – My 1st choice keeper for the season. It would be interesting to see if he could retain his place come the end of the season .
Cuellar – GK – Backup keeper who was a product of the youth system, hopefully would be challenging for a place in the starting line up.
Seitaridis – DR – 1st choice right back but could be replaced with ease. I know this player from the euro 2004 winning greek squad.
Varela – DR – young right back, would be pushing for a starting place.
Lopez – DL – young left back, very talented would be playing a good number of games.
Pernia – DL – experienced full back with a good few years left, hopefully lopez can learn a thing or two from him.
Pablo – DC – young centre back with potential. Would be looking to play him to gain that experience.
Ze Castro – DC – Young Portuguese centre back who also would be getting games to aid his development.
Perea – DC – experienced centre back, would get games but also help nurture the young ones through.
Rodriguez – MR – Argentine winger, one of the more talented players in the squad. Would be playing on the right.
Maniche – MC – the Portuguese has been around but we have a very talented player in him. He can score goals from midfield which any good team needs. He would be starting in centre mid.
Costinha – DM – another Portuguese, very good at what he does which is break the play down. Similar player to chelsea and ex real star Makalele.
Luccin – DM - defensive midfielder, very good but with costinha around, think he will have limited chances this season.
Petrov – ML – left winger, definite starter as he has blistering pace and can cross from the wing.
Bravo – ML – young left winger, won’t play much but will have the odd chance should we get injuries.
Aguero – AM/FC – Young argentine forward with a lot of potential, signed for eur 20m in 2006 so has a big reputation.
Torres – FC – Star man and club captain. Very good finisher and would start most games. Hopefully we can keep him here and injury free.
Mista – FC – forward could play with torres but needs to be fit as he is out for 3 months.
Rodriguez – FC – young forward. Will get chances due to shortage of strikers.
I feel we have a lot of quality but feel we could strengthen. I know we have a lot of talented players in the B team so I will only buy players that can come straight into the team which won’t be easy.
