Your team played out of their skins, or as might happen sometimes, just moved around like zombies while the opposition striker spun webs round them. And all because I did not show encouragement to the team but told them they can win.
In any case, I still have not figured out why these two should be different options

I agree teamtalks have too much of a deciding factor in FM08, it was the same in FM07. I have lost or drawn important games because the AI manager can give the teamtalk he wants but I don't have the option available of what I want to say. I understand teamtalks can have an influence on how your team plays but you do question how a team gets a result against you even when you play the best tactics to your knowledge but is not taken to effect on the pitch.

Just had a scenario: 1-0 away to Chelsea (as newcastle), so i told my team to "do it for the fans". We drew 1-1. I don't believe the team talk had too much of an effect, it was a decent result, but then my centre-back blasted me in the press for "using the wrong approach during the half-time team talk". Didn't realise i could get a rallying cry so wrong |

Of course they are too important. Mainly because the effect of them are so random. You can't possibly know if a player is going to react positively or negatively, or if they are going to react at all. And when you have someone reacting positively, you almoust always also have someone reacting negatively.
And to people who are saying that they are crucial in real life, come on! It's not like Sir Alex Ferguson is a master of picking one sentence from a list of a few possibilities, no, he'll talk a lot longer than that. The "team talks" feature in the game doesn't simulate the REAL LIFE team talks at all. You can't use different tones of voice, nor body language, nor can you see how players are reacting to it (expect after the game you can ask from your ass man how they took it!), there's no interaction.

In my experience as long as you avoid the following you should be ok:
Pre match:
- Expect a win
- You can win today
Half time
- You can win today
- don't let your performances drop (use with caution)
Full time:
- Why dont you play like this every week

That is what. It makes no sense most of the time. Sometimes teams become demotivated when I show them encouragement. That is impossible to happen, unless I am a real bad speaker who can't get his idea across. But since in FM I am just clicking a couple of options, the question about the impact of my speech does not arise. And from here on it becomes groping about in the dark.
Personally I feel if they took away the team talk bit, I would not have missed much.

Totally agree, team talks matter too much and they are my main annoyance in what is a very enjoyable game.
Although get it right and your team who is 3-0 down against a world class team can come out and stuff them, then it isnt so annoying hehehe
But yeah, something must be done in the next version

Because I got distracted by replying to this thread I forgot to give a teamtalk after a huge win and now all my players are upset because I dont give them enough credit |

I was watching the Man utd game last night. I was a bit disappointed at half time, because there looked like there could be a possibility of them losing.
However after half time, they come out and they could of had several goals. I put that down to the team talk Fergie gave them. If he had said nothing, and allowed them to wallow in self pity, then I doubt much would of changed in the second half.
He's not successful out of luck, he knows how to get performances out of his players. So I'd say team talks play a pretty big role in football.

| Yes they do. But in FM is another broken feature that SI can't make it work or give more elaborate choices for greater expression. But there is no need to care, right? At least the game loads, eh?
