How to stop your players taking so many long shots - absolutely ridiculous
I've got all the the sliders set to 'rarely' but dont know what else i can do. Does anybody know how to stop players hitting so many pointless long shots when in a promising attacking position because its a f***ing joke!

See Shot ratio - you need to make sure you're giving them other options.
I didn't mention there, but also increasing Forward Runs by players other than the guilty parties will help, and for the same reason: you need to give them an option that's better than "have a go".

This has given me a headache too, but I've finally tweaked it to my satisfaction, so here goes.....
But first of all, I'd just like to say that the long shots themselves are way too poor now (before the patch they were way too good). I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed that. I hope they strike a good balance with the January patch (if there is one), as well as sorting out all types of shots hit straight at the keeper. Now it's not superkeepers that's the problem, it's crap shots lol. At least with the superkeepers, you'd get a thrill out of the save: oooooo nearly! But now it's: huh? i.e. total let down. 75% of the time the keeper doesn't need to even move and the ball bobbles to him?
Anyway, back to cutting down the long shots.
1. Everyone in your team on long shots "rarely".
2. Do not have anyone in your team with too much Attacking mentality, leave at least 3, 4, or even 5 clicks from the right end of the mentality bar.
3. Try to have the most forward positioned or forward thinking players in your team set on Run with ball "often". Except your striker or strikers, who will already presumably be near the opposition's goal and therefore will not take as many long shots anyway. You can have him/them (striker/s) on Run with ball "medium" "or rarely" (if a big target man). But you want Run with ball "often" for your wingers and attacking midfielders, who will get near the opposition's area.
4. Make sure that players who get near the opposition's area have a player instruction such as through balls or crossing on "Often", so that he's not confused about what to do, and ends up taking a shot. For example, your attacking midfielder could be on Forward runs "often", Run with ball "often", Long shots "rarely", Through Balls "Often", Crossing "rarely" (or "medium"). With wingers Crosses could be on "Often" for example, with Through Balls "medium", so that the long shot option will always be the furthest one down the list.
5. Creative freedom. This is another aspect which sucks on the new patch. Basically, those players who you would expect to do well on creative freedom (Kaka, Diego, etc), will not do well, particularly because the long shots themselves are now so poor. So, I have my attacking players' creative freedom on "normal", with only ONE player on the first notch of "much", my attacking midfielder.
I'm sure others can recommend other things (I hope they do because I want to pick up other tips lol) but if you put those changes into your game (all of them, they won;t work individually), you will see the difference. I'm seeing lots more through balls into the area from just outside it, which is a lot better than long shots practically all the time.
NOTE: there will still be long shots, just like a player who is on crossing "rarely" will sometimes cross the ball. You cannot prevent them completely, but with the above steps it will make the game much more realistic.

I came across the problem, my solution? I made sure i bought players with a great long shots attribute, you cant beat 'em then join 'em
Yes you can. You tell them not too. Thats why they don't all do it. And if they don't listen to you, you sub them or don't play them, and you are able to tell them why.
Yes, players still take stupid shots in real life, but not to the extent of FM. Players in real life tend to be better at deciding when to shoot, and realizing when the player right in front of them is unmarked. They are not perfect, but better.
