It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

what are your thoughts on mixed FWR for CD's?

anyone had the guts to try this?

Personally I wouldn't use it as I can only see bad things happening and its not as if CD's help in the attack much. If you used this I would assume your defense would be subject to too many balls over the top resulting in more goals for the AI although this could be compensated my having a deep line.

True enough, it's just that maybe we should be thinking outside the box a bit more, people have always advised to not have many instructions set to often, as the players may get confused (KISS), and yet the AI has FWR, RWB, Long shots and TTB all set to often! Plus HUB with RWB often, etc...

It sets central defenders also to RWB mixed, not something i'd have ever done either

i may start an experiment game, to see what would happen with those settings..

what exactly do you mean by this? Adjusting his ability to max and potential to max as well or do you want to max all of his attributes as well. If you were to adjust all the attributes your influencing his tactics and they many not be any good, as he could end up using a tactic that employs a 20 def line 20 width and closing down 20 just to mention few of the options </BLOCKQUOTE>

well what I've done with fergie is to tweak his stats so that his potential/current ability is set to 200 and importantly his tactical knowledge is set to 20 instead of 13 (everything else in tactical attributes ive kept the same). Determination and some other non-tactical attributes are set to max as well.

If you want to see the 4-2-4 in action you can also alter the preferred formation so he uses them all the time.

I was trying every trick I could think of to see competitive matches but nothing seems to work eh? I thought maybe if you were an international manager and watched the U21s/or watched reserve games that might work but no success there.

I think the creative freedom being set high is a red herring, bearing in mind it's only a friendly as is FR/LS/RWB/TB. It's a friendly so you're gona want your players to go out and just try their luck. Bear in mind the tactics are likely to be similar for the opposition as well so like you've already pointed out it probably doesn't reflect tactis for competitive matches.

Bolton test – Gary Johnson in charge former Bristol City manager part 1

I chose Gary as I remember him from his Yeovil days as being a good manager in the lower leagues. Now his first game in charge sees him against Barnsley a championship side. Now at the end of the day this should be a Bolton win but the fact that Gary comes from league one where football is played differently should be interesting.

formation screen and line ups

Initial Tactics:

I’m not expecting anything strange to show up here except of course the team instructions as Gary has his way of playing.

team instructions

Immediate assumption here is that Anelka is chosen as the target man to utilise his pace.

Mentality global
Creative Freedom global
Passing global
closing down
Tackling global
forward runs
Assumption that Teymourian is acting as a DM

Run with ball everyone except 2 DC’s mixed
Long shots everyone except left back and left DC mixed for both
Try Through ball everyone often
Cross ball fullbacks and wingers often the rest on mixed

marking
free roles

No hold up the ball

27th minute Barnsley 0 Bolton 1:
mentality

35th minute Barnsley 0 Bolton 1:

mentality

40th minute Barnsley 0 Bolton 1:
mentality

45th minute Barnsley 0 Bolton 2:
formation change
team instructions

Gary seems to be happy with the result hence he’s going slightly defensive with direct passing.

mentality
forward runs

Forward runs do confirm by assumption as he’s got less men committed to attack

halftime Barnsley 0 Bolton 2:
free roles

57th minute Barnsley 0 Bolton 2:

Counter attack added to team instructions
Forward runs returned to normal as above

62nd minute Barnsley 0 Bolton 2:
formation change
team instructions

76th minute Barnsley 0 Bolton 2:

Anelka substituted resulting in these changes
team instructions

91st minute Barnsley 1 Bolton 2:
formation change
team instructions

Free roles for the striker, wingers and CM

forward runs

Full time score Barnsley 1 Bolton 2

Comments: Its too soon to draw any conclusions but Johnson was more eager to protect the lead then Ferguson as a result he went defensive too soon in my opinion.

Since you have already done it have you seen a difference in play? Care to post your findings

What is the point in putting CB's on mixed forward runs. Surely you'd just want them to stay back and not go running up to attack.

Does anyone else do this because I would never think to do it. My CB's always stay on 'rarely' FWD runs.

Also, do they ALWAYS keep the global mentality on the middle 'normal'?

I doubt it but it is the most balanced option out there. We have no way of accessing AI tactics so this is as close as we're gona get. I'm using it and its working for me to a degree

make sure the assistant is in charge of friendlies. Then click on the fixtures list once there select a game you wish to watch, right click with your mouse on it so that it says "view" Then once the game starts click on the mane of the club where the score is indicated it at the top of the screen. And you should be able to see the info.

If this is not clear I can post a manual of sorts with screenshots
