Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default FM 2008: Building Tactics my approach, The Man City Story

Introduction
Okay then seeing as the forums has died down with discussion, I thought I would start another thread dedicated to making tactics and how to go about starting them. I didn’t really like the layout of my theories thread and I much prefer the threads like my ‘Watford Project, so I thought I would do another like that.

I decided to start a game as Man City and in my mind we can easily make the Top 6 and I am aiming for the top four. Despite only being predicted 14th.

Setting up
I have decided I would like to play a diamond and it will take me the first 2-4 matches to set it up properly and make sure everything is perfect.

The Basics
The basics of the 442 Diamond are that you need a very creative attacking midfielder and a solid defensive midfielder protecting the back four. The wings are important and should be used as an outlet to offer options so that the varieties of chances are good.
As I said earlier It takes 2-4 games to watch and make sure everything is right, however I had an idea on how I would like to set up so I used it and early results were decent.

Opening Results

I didn’t buy anyone as I wanted this squarely to concentrate on tactics, anyway I feel I have finally tweaked it right now after studying the opening games in detail, results will only improve and I look forward to the rest of the year, I will keep you updated.
2-1 Reading (Changed a lot, obviously got a lot wrong)
3-1 Newcastle (Changed a tiny bit which resulted in goals for me, I am getting there)
3-0 Middlesbrough (Tweaked mentalities to make it a more goal friendly machine)
2-0 Blackburn (Didn’t make a change)
3-0 Cheltenham (Didn’t make a change)
4-3 Fulham (Didn’t make a change)
1-1 Arsenal (Didn’t make a change)

I am now top and as you may have guessed i have settled on this tactics settings as it is solid at the back yet scoring freely upfront aswell.

The Tactic
Well seeing as I wanted a discussion I am going to post screenshots of all my instructions, this will be a case for discussion and hopefully we can all learn something.

Team Instructions

Full back

Centre Back

Defensive Midfielder

Winger

Attacking Midfielder

Deep Striker

Attacking Striker

I will answer any questions and will try and tell you why I picked such a thing if you are interested.
I will report back as the season progresses.

Are you using farrows on the wingers? Or any other position for that matter.

Hi.

In many ways I have the same approach and setup. Except that I play a 442 flat formation with farrow on wingers. My two midfielders are similar type of players and are not staggered, I tried it and was not satisfied with it. My two strikers also play side by side and again I am not satisfied with with one playing deeper than the other, because the deep lieing striker has to be a target man type or he will loose out on the ball to much. Instructions like play to feet and so on are not making too much of a difference in my view.

Like you I have removed forward runs on wingers, as I feel and notice that it takes them out of play. They dont get the ball a whole lot, so they cant create chances, and too much play is centered in the middle. With a lot of balls lost by center midfielders and resulting in a AI quick pass through the middle and a one on one with my keeper.

The tactic is working ok, not great. I do tend to have a hard time against the top sides that play through balls through the middle for their strikers to run on, which they invariably do. Thank god the AI strikers are just as shitty as mine in one on one situations.

I was wondering how many times your fast striker gets called offside, when you have forward runs on him? Too much I wager.

I don't believe this is gonna work for you as your split mentalities seem far away from the DL, and from each position.

CB playing on 1 mentality while AM is like 16? seems waaaay too far... atleast this is how I see it.
looking forward to see your progress though, GL and KUTGW!
