Default Transparent background image for print

I have read a lot of tutorials for creating transparent backgrounds for use on web pages but haven't been able to find any info on making backgrounds transparent for printing. Can anyone give me some pointers. Saving as a GIF always seems to give me very blocky edges.

Hi Ricknrael,

Welcome to the forum. Are you wanting to send an image from Photoshop to a page layout program (InDesign or Quark) which will finally be sent out to a service bureau? Typically, transparency is handled with a clipping path. The first place to start finding info is in Photoshop Help > Index > Clipping Path. In Photoshop CS I found the entry started...

You can use image clipping paths to define transparent areas in images you place in page-layout applications. In?addition, Mac OS users can?embed Photoshop images in many word-processor files.

For assistance with image clipping paths, choose Help > Export Transparent Image. This interactive wizard helps you prepare images with transparency for export to a page-layout application.

You may want to use only part of a Photoshop image when printing it or placing it in another application. For example, you may want to use a foreground object and exclude the background. An image clipping path lets you isolate the foreground object and make everything else transparent when the image is printed or placed in?another application.

Does that help?

Thank you so much! I will give this a try. As I explained, there is a lot of info out there for web transparency but not a lot to do with saving transparency for use in print. And, yes, I do want to use the images in page layout programs.

Many, many thanks,
Raelene

Very Cool! Thanks for that. The few times I use a page layout program I still use PageMaker. I don't know InDesign at all!
