Default Breaking the Villains out.

Breaking the Villains out.

OK, here goes for my first ever FM story. I started as Aston Villa with the 7.0.2 patch and have spent eight seasons at Villa Park. I will gradually, season by season, bring you up to date with the club, and how it has evolved over the years, with many players leaving and more than a few exciting signing coming in. It will be in depth but not to the extreme (manager love-life etc...) I am writing this story as I need something to revive my love for the game and I hope this does the trick.

I will be a fictional manager named "Lee Edwards" who has had successful managerial spells with Crystal Palace, West Ham and Villa's fierce across city rivals Birmingham, as well as amassing 23 caps and 4 goals for England and 345 appearances for his one and only club, Tottenham Hotspur.

I hope you enjoy it.

The first update will come in about two days time.

Season 06/07

1st July 2006

Breaking News

Martin O'Neill has resigned from his position as manager of Aston Villa football club stating that it "Just simply did not feel right" and that it "would be better to end it sooner rather than later. Speculation as to his successor is ripe with former Birmingham manager Lee Edwards being touted as the favourite which would surely not go down too well with the fans.
I had been out of work for over 12 months and I desperately wanted to get back into the world of football.
"I'd love to be the manager at Villa Park but I just pray the fans accept me after being involved with rivals Birmingham" I thought to myself putting the phone down after a conversation with chairman Randy Lerner concerning the vacant managererial posistion. It was agreed that we would meet to discuss it tomorrow afternoon.

2nd July 2006

"Good afternoon, Mr. Edwards! Please, have a seat" said a very welcoming Lerner as I was ushered into the room. As usual there were the board members seated around the table all staring intently at me as I walked in. It was nothing new to me as I had done it all before and no longer felt the nerves like in the past. I took my seat and was offered tea by an American who was obviously getting to the English way of doing things.
"So, Lee?" Began Lerner
"Why do you believe that you are the right man to take this club forward?"
"Well, I think I have enough experience in the Premier League (Not Premiership anymore, remember? ) to have learnt from my mistakes. I am no rookie but I still have my drive which keeps me determined and willing which I believe will help motivate the players and indeed the entire club to do well. I think that a strong mid-table position is a realistic target but if lady luck smiles on us, a place in Europe is not out of the question." I said confidently.
"You think the club can push for a place in Europe, do you Lee? I see you are ambitious, something that I admire very much. I have interviewed a number of candidates already and none of them have impressed me as much as you so far"
"Lookin' good" I thought with a slight smirk on my face. Perhaps a little bit of over-confidence was creeping in.
"Thank you for your time Mr. Edwards, we will let you know sometime in the next few days whether your application has been successful" said Lerner after some discussion about the squad and other various subjects concerning the club. The chairman ended the meeting whilst shaking my hand and showing me to the exit.
"Great, a cliff hanger..." I muttered sarcastically on my way out, but I was happy overall with how the meeting had gone and I felt that I'd made a fairly good impression.

3rd July 2006

A day of complete boredom was endeed when the phone rang. I jumped from the sofa and rushed over to answer it.
"Hello?"
"Hello, Mr. Edwards?, this is Randy Lerner speaking. Would it be possible for you to come over and see me? I have a contract prepared for you"
A huge grin appeared on my face. I really wanted the job and it seemed Lerner was offering it to me.
"Thank you! I'll be right over" I replied, already reaching for my coat.

From my house in London to Birmingham it was no small trip. After finally arrived at Villa Park, I took a step back and looked up at the stadium, it was simply magnificent! I walked slowly up to the entrance, taking in every tiny detail. Just as I was about to knock on the board room door, Lerner opened it.
"Ahh! Hello Lee! Took you a while didn't it?"
"London to Birmingham isn't exactly a five minute walk, is it?"
"Please come in" said Lerner, stepping aside.
"Here is the contract we have prepared for you, as you can see, your salary will be £25,000 a week and you will have 20M to spend in the transfer market to help you reach our target of avoiding relegation from the English Premier League this season. It will be a two year deal, I hope this satisfies you"
"I accept your offer Mr. Lerner!" I said without a second thought.
"I hope you are the man to fulfil my ambitions for the club. I recommend you take a day or two off and have a rest before starting work, we will have everything ready when you return, the club will pay for your accommodation while you find yourself a place."

I took my day off to look around the city and do a bit of property hunting, but I couldn't settle on a place just yet. Tomorrow I'd start a new chapter in my career as manager of Aston Villa. I couldn't wait...

4th July 2006

I looked around my office for the first time, in front of me was the fixture list, various coach reports for all the players in the squad, and my assistant’s opinion on the first choice XI and overall strength. Our first fixtures would be:

Manchester United (H)
Tottenham Hotspur (A)
Liverpool F.C. (H)

Hardly an easy start but at least we would face Man Utd and Liverpool at home. I had also arranged a series of pre-season friendlies, they would be:

Lanciano (A)
Martina (A)
Salernitana (A)
Siena (A)
Coventry (A)
Fiorentina (H)
Blackburn (H)

I felt that these fixtures would prepare the players for the gruelling season that is to come. The Assistant manager’s report reflected my feeling almost exactly. It was obvious that we needed a true right midfielder, with no-one of real quality in the current squad who could play there and fit into my 4-4-2 or 4-4-2 diamond which I liked to play. I also felt that we were a little weak in the centre of defence especially with Laursen known for his injury proneness, right back was an area that would need improving as well with Aaron Hughes the only player good enough to play well there, as Mark Delaney was out with a long-term injury. I would be aiming to bring in a few future prospects, this would, after all, be a long-term project. I sorted out the players who’s time at the club was up from the coach reports and my own opinion from watching the team train together, and Patrik Berger, Liam Ridgewell, Jlloyd Samuel and Lee Hendrie were transfer listed and information was faxed to all clubs. Gary Cahill, Adam McGurk, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Craig Gardner and Robert Olejnik were all listed for loan and offered to clubs, as they were not, in my opinion, ready for first team action just yet. Meanwhile I had identified a young players who would be worth pursuing purely by reputation alone. I had offered a contract to Lille right back Omar Benzerga, I would have to pay £300,000 in compensation, this was a small sum to pay as this kid had real potential. I also made enquiries for young Osasuna prospect Garikoitz Aldeondo who my scouts had been raving about and I have to say, I was really excited about him after seeing him play in a friendly against Fenerbahçe, hopefully Osasuna would not be over the top with their valuation. I gave my newly hired scout Jack Chapman instructions in the league BBVA of Spain for a right midfielder who could dribble and cross the ball well, not to forget that he must also possess a bit of pace and some good passing skills. Ian Storey-Moore was then sent in search of a centre back and right back preferably under the age of 25 in Italy were apparently teams were pretty good at defending? I was in search for some good coaches as well, knowing very well that there is no point in having good players if they are not properly prepared or trained and I placed an advert for a coach, scout, fitness coach.

5th July 2006

I was at the club as early as 7:30am to start work and pursue some more players. I had been using DVDs prepared by a few player’s agents to scout players, recommended to me by a certain former England manager, although not like seeing the player with my own eyes or those of my scout, it saved lots of time and money and helped me sort out the crap from the decent players who would improve my squad. I had put in a bid of £7.5M for Newcastle defender Steven Taylor who I rated a lot as a player and as a professional and at only 20 he was bound to improve.

As I was watching and helping with the training I was very surprised to see 56 year old scout jack Chapman running and shouting and with a strange look of self-satisfaction on his face when he finally came to a halt in front of me.
“Lee! You’ve got to come and see this lad! He…is…BRILLIANT!”
“Hold on a minute Jack, slow down. Who exactly are you talking about?”
“Pedro Leon is his name, plays for Real Murcia in the Spanish second division. A right winger, just like you wanted, eh? And… He’s only 19 but he’s gonna be big, one of the world’s best! I can just tell!”
“When can see him?” I questioned.
“He’ll be playing a friendly against Boca Juniors on the 6th, and I bought you a DVD from his agent, believe me, once you’ve seen him play you won’t think I’ve gone mad!”
I booked a flight down to Spain first thing when I got back to my office for me, Jack and my assistant, then settled back in my chair to watch the DVD. I had to admit, Jack was spot on. The kid had it all: pace, flair, great dribbling ability, a mean cross, a thunderbolt of a shot, and above all, he had a great engine on him and never stopped running, something I valued greatly in a player, plus he was a set-piece specialist, something that was lacking in the team at the moment. But he was not yet the finished product, he had a tendency to be easily knocked off the ball, his final decision making needed to be improved, something I hoped some of the older heads could help him with and he was also rather wasteful in front of goal, but overall I was certain I had found my man and immediately put in a probing bid of £5M.

I heard a knock on my door.
“Come in!” I called.
It was coaching duo Steve Burns and Bryan Jones.
“We have both received excellent offers from Liverpool who are a big club, we will be leaving the club shortly” said Steve looking down at his feet, ashamed of his disloyalty maybe?
“bugger off then” I replied through gritted teeth, resisting the urge to kick him in the shin from under the desk.
They both skulked out of the room.
Another knock.
In came another coaching duo Jimmy Hendry and Tony McAndrew who were important in my plans.
“Umm…” Began Tony, I knew what was coming.
“Well… we’ve received good offers from Chelsea and have accep…”
“Oh for ****’s sake! What do I have to ****ing to do to keep hold of my bastard coaches! I’m trying to make this ****ing club successful goddammit! Now just **** off out of here before I get bloody angry!” I screamed at them in a rage, making my office even more of a mess in the process.
I just hoped some of my adverts got some answers.

Meanwhile, I had set my sights on Southampton left-back Gareth Bale to help out Bouma with the left back position as Jlloyd Samuel was not part of my plans. I sent my assistant (can’t for the life of me remember what his name was) to watch him in a couple of games, although I already knew all about him. I decided to test Southampton’s resolve with a bid of £2.5M.

That evening I packed my bags to get ready for my flight over to Spain to see wonderkid Pedro Leon in action.

I type so slow, hopefully I’ll be faster after finishing this story.

6th July 2006

I finally got off the plane after a nerve-racking two hours, flying really was not my thing as the two people sitting beside me had quickly found out. I was quickly on my way to Murcia, the game was against Boca at 2:30pm, but I wanted to be there an hour or so in advance to see the kid and have a few words with him before the game. I spotted him walking up to the entrance, we exchanged some words or rather my translanter did, not sure he got across my point well enough though. He seemed like a nice lad (I wasn't tapping him up by the way if that's what you're all thinking), I was very impressed by his attitude and I told him that I'd be watching the game. I took my seat. The lad made some very good runs through out the match but his team mates never seemed to be able to pick him out, but when he did get the ball, he made some excellent passes and managed to set up a goal through a teasing cross which was headed across goal and into the net. He played it safe generally, and didn't show off too much not wanting to make a mistake was my guess. I was impressed enough to pursue my interest in him.

I was back in my office when once again the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Hello, this is Mr. Mourinho speaki..."
"If it's about Steven Davis, then I've lost count of the times that I've told you; HE'S NOT FOR SALE!" I cut in before the outspken Chelsea manager could finish.
"I know your feelings about the player, but none the less, we are making a formal bid worth £12.3M. Think about it. OK?
"I haven't changed my mind José and neither has the chairman as far as I know, I repeat, he is not for sale whatever the bid" I said firmly, then hung up.
Of course what I said was not true, if Chelsea were to bid me £200M, then I would accept.
*Ring Ring!*
"Hello?" again.
"Hello, this is Glenn Roeder, about your bid for Steven Taylor, we will start negociations at £10M."
"Hmm... I'll think about it Glenn, let me get back to you"
Making a phone call of my own this time, I dialled my scout Ian's mobile.
"Yes?" he answered almost immiediatly.
"Hi, It's Lee. How's it going? Found anyone worth going for?"
"Well, Yes I have actually. I've been very impressed with a centre-back named Felipe, he plays for Udinese, you should come out and see. Oh! And before I forget, ever heard of Christian Zaccardo? Great player, a right-back, excellent defensively and his crossing's better than Beckham's, should be great for Carew. I thought you wouldn't mind if I made a quick enquiry for Christian, and they only want £5M! An absolute steal! Snap him up quick"
"I'll have to make time to come and see them both play next week, I'm just too busy at the moment"
"All right, see you then."

7th July 2006

Southampton had got back to me demanding £3M for Gareth Bale which I quickly agreed to as it was a very small price to pay for such a huge talent, Gareth and his agent would be over tomorrow to dicuss a contract. I had recieved a bid of £100,000 for Patrik Berger, I accepted as he was not at all in my plans and I would have been happy to let him leave on a free. Fulham had offered £1M up front for Liam Ridgewell, that was also accepted. While I was training with the squad I noticed something, I did not have a central midfielder who could help the forwards with the goal scoring. I set to work finding one and Middlesbrough mis-fit Fabio Rochemback sprung to my attention, he was unsettled at Boro and I though he would be an excellent additon to the squad, and having played for Barcelona and Brazil, he couldn't be too bad. Loan offers were recieved for Craig Gardner, Robert Olejnik, Adam McGurk, and Gabriel Agbonlahor from Sunderland, Doncaster, Crewe and Newcastle respectively, all were accepted as the clubs would provide valuable first-team experience for the yougsters.

The rest of the day came and went without much further happenings.

Any feedback at all good or bad would be greatly appreciated.
