Everton 3 Manchester United 4 (after extra time)

What a great advert for football that was. Manchester United sneaked through to the Carling Cup quarter-finals after overcoming Everton in an extraordinary game at Goodison Park tonight. Substitute Louis Saha tapped home the winner just three minutes from time to prevent penalties. Alan Smith had earlier given United the lead before Simon Davies' 2nd half freekick levelled things. Then, an unbelievable six-minute spell late on saw Everton take the lead through substitute Victor Anichebe before Nemanja Vidic scored a penalty almost from the restart. Saha then looked to have won the game in 90 minutes in injury time but just seconds after the restart, Tim Cahill's header sent the game into extra time. Manager Faiz Khan named the side that grabbed the late win at Aston Villa. Everton gaffer David Moyes made two changes from the away win against Watford with the ineligible Tim Howard and Anichebe replaced by Richard Wright and Andrew Johnson.

On a dry but very cold evening on Merseyside, referee Ray Olivier got the proceedings going. What was a great game started quite slowly as both teams were feeling each other out and looking for each other to make the first mistake. The first real opportunity of note came after 13 minutes. Kieran Richardson fizzed in a great freekick towards the near post where Vidic's instinctive effort was brilliantly stopped by Wright. Six minutes later, United had a better chance to score the opening goal. Patrice Evra's pinpoint pass sent Smith clear on goal but Wright made a good stop with his feet. Just seconds later though, United did open the scoring. Paul Scholes played a wonderful pass through for Smith to powerfully place his effort into the far corner. Everton were very slow to begin with and they did not make their first opening until the halfhour. Davies played a neat one-two with Leon Osman before striking a decent effort which drifted just inches wide of the post. Aside from that, it was all United at the moment. After 36 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo knocked down a Wayne Rooney ball into the path of Michael Carrick who unleashed a powerful shot which flew just inches over the crossbar. Five minutes later, Everton had a good opportunity to level the match. After the United defence poorly cleared a Johnson cross, Cahill teed up the England man but he blasted wastefully well over the crossbar. The referee brought the first half to a close after three minutes of stoppage time. The score from Goodison Park was Everton 0 Manchester United 1.

Khan was very happy with his side's performance that led to them leading at the interval. He did send his side out for the second half with caution though. But just after the 2nd half started, his players were pegged back. Ronaldo was penalised for holding onto James McFadden's shirt and Davies made United pay with a wonderfully placed freekick from 30 yards out into the top corner - his 1st goal of the season! The equaliser gave the home side a bit of momentum and they almost took the lead three minutes later. Nuno Valente strode forward unchallenged before teeing up Tony Hibbert from 20 yards out and his effort flew just inches wide of the far corner. Just before the hour, Everton should have taken the lead. Osman stormed down the right flank past Gary Neville and his cross to the near post was headed over Cahill from 6 yards out. The visitors were certainly struggling to keep up with their visibly fresher opponents and Everton almost took the lead midway through the 2nd half. Joleon Lescott played the ball down the line for Johnson to latch onto and his low cross found Cahill 12 yards out but his effort went trickling inches wide of the far corner. The match went a little quiet after that chance as United got hold of possession without really creating anything in the way of chances. The match suddenly came to life on 84 minutes when Everton took the lead. Davies played a freekick into the crowded penalty area and although Cahill's powerful header was saved by Edwin van der Sar, Anichebe was on hand to bundle in the rebound. From the restart, United quickly levelled matters. Substitute Saha ran down the left flank and crossed into the area where Yobo pushed substitute Darren Fletcher over and the referee quickly pointed to the spot. Vidic confidently stepped up and dispatched the penalty, going to Wright's right side - his 1st goal for the club and what a time to get it! The game entered stoppage time and United scored a dramatic third goal. Fletcher strode forward and played a delightful pass through for Saha to strike it first time into the roof of the net. United were still celebrating when Everton hit back just before the seconds were out. Hibbert exchanged passes with substitute Lee Carsley and crossed to the near post where Cahill's towering header nestled in the back of the net to send Goodison wild. The whistle for the end of 90 minutes went shortly with the crowd in a shocked mood. The score after 90 minutes was Everton 3 Manchester United 3.

The extra time period begun at Goodison Park with both sets of supporters rallying their players on. United had taken quite a while to get going in that 2nd half but they almost took the lead early in extra time. Carrick and Fletcher combined superbly to send Smith through on goal but he dragged his effort well wide of the far corner. Towards the end of the first period, Everton came close to retaking the lead. Davies fed a dangerous ball across the face of goal and the ball came to McFadden who struck it low and hard, missing the far corner by a matter of inches. Into the second period of extra time and the hosts had another decent chance to take the lead. Valente sent a deep ball into a crowded area where Carsley climbed highest to head just inches over the crossbar. Two minutes later, United came closer to scoring. Fletcher picked out Saha who struck an instant volley which Wright did brilliantly to push away to safety. After 117 minutes however, Saha did take his opportunity. Neville sent Smith away on goal and instead of shooting, Smith laid the ball on for Saha to tap home from six yards. In the final minute, Saha sent Smith through on goal but the England man could only poke his shot wide of the far corner. The final whistle went at Goodison Park with the managers hugging, clearly showing what that game was all about - end-to-end drama with respect! The final score after extra time on Merseyside was Everton 3 Manchester United 4.

Match Verdict - an unbelievable match to witness, especially in those dying minutes in the 2nd half of normal time. Neither side deserved to lose but on this night, United made sure that Everton were the losers.

Everton - Wright 7, Hibbert 7, Valente 6, Yobo 5, Lescott 7 (Stubbs 84, 6), Osman 7 (Carsley 76, 6), McFadden 7, Davies 7, Cahill 8, Johnson 6 (Anichebe 76, 7), Beattie 7.

Goals - Davies (47), Anichebe (84), Cahill (90)

Man Utd - van der Sar 7, G Neville 7, Evra 7, Ferdinand 7, Vidic 8, Ronaldo 7 (Park Ji-Sung 65, 7), Richardson 7, Carrick 7, Scholes 7 (Fletcher 79, 8), Smith 8, Rooney 7 (Saha 61, 8).

Goals - Smith (20), Vidic (pen 86), Saha (90, 117)

Booked - Ferdinand, Richardson & Carrick

Injured - Ronaldo (65)

Man of the Match - Louis Saha - when your team are not playing well, you need someone from the bench to make the impact. And Saha proved to be Khan's saviour with two well-taken and absolutely crucial goals.

Manchester United manager Faiz Khan has confirmed on the club's website that winger Cristiano Ronaldo suffered quite a serious injury during tonight's Carling Cup victory over Everton. Ronaldo suffered a strained ankle after falling without no player in sight. He was stretchered off the pitch and was seen leaving Goodison Park tonight on crutches. The club's physio confirmed that the winger would be ruled out for between a month to 6 weeks. This will be a massive blow to United's challenge for the Premiership title as there are about to face Arsenal and Liverpool in the next month. Khan has stated that his place in the side will most likely go to Park Ji-Sung.

Have you noticed nobody has responded so far?
Perhaps a biased attitude towards your team may be a factor!

Was there really a need for this? The guy's putting alot of effort into it and writing a good little story. There will always be a bias towards the team you are writing for, specially if it is the one you support.

gandycoleuk - It sounds horrible, but I'm delighted to see that you got battered by Wigan! They always seem to destroy me when I play as Man Utd and I was beginning to think it was just down to my lousey management. Glad to see that other people struggle against them too. KUTGW

Perhaps a bit less biased would do the trick! Its a good story. Not saying be totally neutral but the madrid story is a lot less biased!

Your doing a goos job story wise but is there any need for this

As the new Premiership season draws ever closer, new Manchester United manager Faiz Khan has announced his squad of players for the new campaign. Khan has decided against making any new signings before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month as he is satisfied with the current crop of players in his squad. Here is his squad in full:

Edwin van der Sar - expected to be 1st choice between the sticks this season as his experience and shot-stopping will be very important this season. He is seen by Khan as one of his key players and is definitely one of the top goalkeepers in the last decade of this game.

Tomasz Kuszczak - on loan from West Brom this season, with a permanent deal happening next summer. The young Poland international is expected to back-up van der Sar as he gets to grip with being at one of the biggest clubs in the world. His biggest asset is certainly his shot-stopping and that asset alone will be vital to United's aspirations this season.

Mikael Silvestre - experienced France international defender. Normally plays at left-back but is equally at home at the heart of the defence. Silvestre will very much be a back-up player this season as cover for both centre-back and left-back.

Nemanja Vidic - an absolute beast of a defender who is expected to start at the heart of United's back four. He is very good in the air, in the tackle but the most important attribute that the Serbian possesses according to Khan is his bravery in everything he does on the pitch.

Wes Brown - one of the most underrated defenders in the Premiership. Has pretty much every asset that a central defender could have - tackling, heading, good strength and he's no slouch either. Will probably act as cover for Ferdinand and Vidic but can also do an effective job at right-back.

Gary Neville - United captain and the heartbeat of this team, Neville will be 1st choice at right-back this season. His heart on his sleeve approach is loved by the club's supporters and Khan has always admired his spirit. But not only that - Neville is a pretty damn good footballer, pushing forward at every opportunity to assist attacks and defends very well too.

Gabriel Heinze - very committed and experience Argentine who plays at left-back but can also play at centre-back to the same high level. Adds some bite to the United defence and is sure to be 1st choice at left-back whilst being cover centre-back. Loved by the fans for his ferocious tackling and all action committed dislays.

John O'Shea - every team has a Mr Versatile and O'Shea is United's. Can play in a variety of positions including in central midfield and anywhere across the back four. Hell, he can even play in goal . Will most likely act as cover for the first XI, filling in at every opportunity.

Patrice Evra - the attacking alternative to Heinze, the French left-back will definitely be a key member of the squad this season. The main reason for this is that he can used pretty much anywhere along the left side as he is fantastic at storming down the left side whipping in crosses. But he does need to improve his defending in order to play a major part this season.

Rio Ferdinand - the calming influence to the United defence, Khan will need Ferdinand to stay fit for the full season such is his importance to the squad. Very quick, good in the air and very good on the ground, Ferdinand is certain to start as 1st choice at centre-back. He may deemed overrated in some quarters, but Khan maintains Ferdinand is one the world's best central defenders.

Darren Fletcher - the Scotland international faces possibly his biggest season in his career. The unsung hero of the squad because although his end product is sometimes missing, his effort and die-hard attitude makes him a very important member of Khan's squad. However, he is definitely back-up this season, whether it is central midfield or right-wing that needs filling.

Michael Carrick - the club's only summer signing, Carrick will have to settle quickly if United are to challenge this season. Will be 1st choice this season as his ability to track back, break up attacks and start attacks will be a good asset to Khan's side. The England international can also pass damn good and will look to showcase these talents on the Old Trafford stage.

David Jones - very young boy coming into a big man's squad. Jones is extremely talented in his favoured central midfield position but is very unlikely to play a major part in this season. Khan will probably use Jones in the Carling Cup to gain more experience and then hopefully Jones can push for a first team place next season. Certainly one for the future.

Alan Smith - the former Leeds man will be hoping to get his career back on track this season after his horrific leg break last term. Khan has already stated that he hopes to use Smith as a striker. He will be back in October where he could obtain a regular place in the first XI if his attitude is right. His commitment and heart will be a plus for Khan as he wants committed players in his side.

Cristiano Ronaldo - all eyes will be on the Portuguese international as it is the first season since the whole World Cup episode. No doubt that Khan will see him as an integral part of the squad and the winger is expected to start the season as 1st choice right winger. The man has the talent and skills plus the mental strength to deal with away fans and Khan hopes for Ronaldo to have a productive campaign.

Park Ji-Sung - the Korean international is sort of a cult hero at Old Trafford as his committed displays have no doubt gone down well with the suppporters. Park has an engine to run for the full 90 minutes and has the end product to succeed here. He is likely to start the season as understudy to Ronaldo but can also cover the left-wing position.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - a real hero with the fans, Solskjaer will hope that his injury problems are well and truly behind him. He has been loved ever since that night in Barcelona. Khan was no doubt singing his praises on that night. Unfortunately, the Norway international's legs have probably got slower and we're likely to see more sub appearances than starts this season.

Ryan Giggs - the legendary winger enters his 15th Premiership season still going strong and gunning for a record 9th League medal. His displays down the years on that left wing has mesmerised us all and Khan is hoping that the Welshman has some left in the tank yet. He is likely to be given the left-wing berth this coming season.

Kieran Richardson - this could be a big season for the London lad as he will be trying to re-create the form that we saw at West Brom in 2005. The winger has bags of pace and trickery and can surely be a hit with the fans if he gets his chance. He will have to work very hard though as he will probably start the season as cover for left-wing and left-back.

Wayne Rooney - arguably the team's most influential player, the 21 year-old from Liverpool will no doubt be hungry for a 1st Premiership medal this season. The player can do just about anything with a football and his mesmeric football brain can unlock any defence in the world. Will no doubt start the season as the 1st choice striker. This could be his season.

Paul Scholes - one of the best attacking midfielders in the world over the past decade, the lad from Manchester will be raring to go as ever this season. Having recovered from a career-threatening eye problem, his vision is a key attribute to his game as he can control the tempo of any game with his passing. Will probably try to forge a partnership with newcomer Carrick in the engine room.

Louis Saha - the France international has endured a frustrating United career so far as injuries have held him back numerous times. When fit though, he is as dangerous as Thierry Henry and as ruthless as Didier Drogba. He just needs to get over his injury problems and we should see the best of Saha in a United shirt this season.

I have a lot of mates that are united fans and if you think Saha will be a cross between Henry and Drogba then yoy are in coocku land!

PLus how many people knew he had the mental strength to deal with the away fans last august! One of my mates was very worried about the impact his wink would have on his campaign

Well, I'm sorry if you feel that way williamshankley but everyone's entitled to their opinion. Saha does have the knack of nicking goals when I need them at the moment and he's injury free. We'll see what he has done by the end of the season.

Manchester United have been dealt a double injury blow as they enter a tough period in the first season under Faiz Khan. Left-back Patrice Evra has suffered a back strain while lifting weights during training this morning. He looked very uncomfortable and the club's physio has stated the Frenchman could be out for around 4 weeks. And in another blow to the United defence, their star performer at the moment Nemanja Vidic has been ruled out for at least a fortnight after pulling his hamstring whilst on international duty for Serbia. He was injured in Serbia's friendly at home to Morocco. Both players were at the top of the game before these setbacks so it will be interesting to see what happens when they come back. Evra's place is likely to go to Mikael Silvestre while Wes Brown should do a good job in Vidic's absence.
