This is an FM 07 test of what I intend to do in FM 08, with me and a good friend as a rival. partly its testing the rival idea, partly its testing if anyone would be interested if I put it up. forgive our alias names.
A tale of 2 managers
prologue
The Mexican centre back laid off a great pass to the marauding right back and captain Deltablue he set off past the left winger and on. The clock was ticking and it would probably be his last chance. The game was Mexico – Ireland. It was a farewell match for both captains, Deltablue and his best friend Mousus. They had been best friends since their days in the defence for the youth teams of Kent amateur side Drake, both rising to become national team captains due to their decision to ignore England and using their dual nationalities. They were also avid Football Manager fans and they had both decided to become managers afterward. Deltablue shook himself out of his thoughts as mousus himself approached. He lunged in but deltablue managed to evade him, however a younger Ireland defender approached and deltablue lost the ball under the pressure. The final whistle blew on a 1-1 draw. As the teams walked off the 2 captains approached each other. “You’re slipping, I’m hardly renowned for speed and agility yet you were nowhere near me” deltablue grinned at mousus. “You’re slipping as well, you bottled it, just as well we’re finished now, the way you’re going you couldn’t even get a game for Norwich”
After getting changed, mousus headed off to join his friend for a drink. He was met by a man in a business suit. Some time later he arrived slightly late for the meeting. “You know Nuneaton have been trying to get out of the conference north for a while?” he asked before his friend could comment. Deltablue nodded. “Well they’ve asked me to rectify that.” Deltablue shook his friend’s hand. “bit low isn’t it?” he asked. “Well it best to start low, to get experience, plus its going to be interesting. After they had a drink they headed off their separate ways. The next morning deltablue got a phone call. “Is that deltablue?” a voice asked, “So what if I am?” deltablue asked. “I represent Lewes. I’ve head your friend Mousus has just taken over at Nuneaton. I was just wondering if you wanted to race him to the conference”. This sounded fascinating.
2006-2007
Preseason.
“How much?” deltablue asked, amazed. He was aware mousus had access to greater resources than he but he did expect this. “5k” mousus said, enjoying the moment. That was as much as deltablue’s entire initial budget and he knew it. “and he’s 17”. The addition of an extra couple of thousand from sales allowed deltablue a little more to spend but he knew is option were more limited than mousus, he had added even more to his 5 figure budget, a luxury at this level. “Looks like I’m already ahead” mousus added. Deltablue didn’t mind these mind games, they were just a bit of fun. “just wait until the big match” deltablue said. In football manager games of yore they once decided to test out their new signings in a friendly, it had become a tradition that they had decided to retain for their real careers. First he had to do what he could on a limited budget to get a player or 2. As the big game arrived, he had bought Paul Talbot, a left back from Gateshead, and Kyle Wilson, a forward from Barrow. For 3k and 4k respectively. Mousus had bought left winger Adam buckley from Spalding and young defensive midfielder Ben Hall from Leek, for 4k and 5k, and just to ease deltablue he had left a bit to spare, whereas his rival had exhausted his resources on the lower fees he could afford. This was the only friendly that mattered for both. Mousus’s smile was soon wiped off his face. Deltablue preferred a fairly conventional if creative 4-4-2 with attacking wingers, as he believed that at any level, if you try and play good football, results should follow. Mousus played with a defensive midfield anchorman, with the other 2 midfielders all pushing up which was interesting. Star forward Paul Booth scored for Lewes just before half time, then early in the second half, young right winger Jamie Cade scored twice to make it 3-0. deltablue raised 3 fingers to his counterpart, who just shrugged and turned away. However it wasn’t going to be that easy, fairly late on, nuneatons own forward star Brian Qualey scored, then only a few minutes later, on the 80 minute mark he did it again. They pushed for an equalizer but brilliant goalkeeping from Steve Williams kept the lead and the result at 3-2. there was a lot for both managers to respect about each others performance. now for the business of the league.
