Default They Would Be Giants

Two brothers, once there were, one short, one tall. In all things they were inseperable, playmates, friends. That was until one day, when Sanny was 14 and Jim was 16, their football coach took the boys aside.

I'm sorry, Sanny, we just can't keep you on. You're too small to be a professional. Jim, we'd like to offer you the chance to play with the first team. We think you have what it takes.

It was a heart-breaking blow for wee Sanny and it was the end of the close friendship between the brothers. As Jim spent more and more time at the club, so Sanny spent less and less. At first he would go along to matches to support his brother, but Jim would barely acknowledge him. It wasn't a deliberate slight, he just wanted to spend time with his teammates, but it cut Sanny to the bone.

Years went by, and whilst Jim enjoyed a long career, it was never at the top level. Sanny turned to coaching at a young age, and when he turned 38, with Jim aged 40, each had the reputation as an up-and-coming Scottish manager. So it came to be that the Old Firm, having suffered poor seasons in 2005/06, were seeking new managers. And, as you might have guessed, it was to Sanny and Jim that they turned.

Sanny's philosophy was simple - you don't need to be big to win football games. His teams never featured any player over 5'9" and Rangers fans could expect the same. Meantime, Jim felt that the taller, the better, and his teams never featured anyone shorter than 6' tall. It would likely prove an intriguing mix in the coming months and years.

hehe...nice concept! Although it would have been nice if the heights could change on FM (I don't think they do as yet!). And so little Sanny might have to fire a few youngsters as they would become taller.

Nevertheless, would love to see how high Rangers reach and how low Jim's team have to stoop to win!

Old Firm Game #1 - Ibrox, 9th September

After five league games, neither side was overly upset at the start they had made to the season. Rangers were two points ahead of Celtic, having won every match since an opening day 4-2 loss at Dundee United. Celtic, meanwhile, had followed up home wins over St Mirren (4-0) and Inverness (3-1) with a 1-0 defeat at Hearts (who themselves had won all five games to date) and a 2-2 draw at Dunfermline, before annhialating Aberdeen 5-0 at Parkhead.

With only one away point, Celtic fans may have been nervous ahead of their trip across the city, Rangers riding high on that four-game winning streak. By half time, though, they led 2-0, strikers Aliadière and Vennegoor of Hesseling netting from close range and it was the home side on the ropes.

Chris Burke and Nacho Novo appeared for the second half in place of the ineffectual Lee Chun-Soo and Thomas Buffel, but Craig Beattie struck within 80 seconds to secure the win for Celtic. Vennegoor of Hesselink soon made it 4, rendering Gaizka Mendieta's late freekick worthless.

Rangers 1-4 Celtic Mendieta 79; Aliadière 17, Vennegoor of Hesselink 26, 53, Beattie 47 MoM: Craig Beattie (Celtic)
