Long ball = most extreme version of direct play

I quite like direct play at all levels as I like pacey teams and this loans well to counter attacking football. But I do mix it up with short passing too

When players are given direct passing instructions they will look for the long ball down the field as the first option. If it is not there they will look for a short pass.

Yes it leads to a lot of long balls that end up in turnovers, but it is a risk reward thing....it can create a lot of great opportunities versus weaker clubs and it is also used well in counter attacking systems where you can take advantage of a back line pushing up the field too much.

Plus it helps to watch the match and see the flow of play. If you are playing direct and the lads aren't connecting on their passes, shorten up a little. I like to make adjustments as the match wears on, but you can learn a great deal just by watching the little blobs
