I finally thought i'd cracked it and even started to offer instructions to others on how to set up their tactic in a way that gets the best out of your side AND keeps them scoring.
I sat 2nd in the Prem with West Ham after finishing 4th the first season. We had scored the most goals and had the 2nd best defence in the league.................then it all went wrong?.
I must just point out that i'm NOT losing games and as such suddenly struggling, i have only 1 defeat in 26 games(0-1 away to Chelsea), which leaves my stats at Won 15 Drew 10 Lost 1, pretty good all told, but what is killing me here is how many efforts my players need to score a goal in the Premiership?.
I must point out before i start getting the usual, "its your tactics" or "its the quality of your chances", i have removed all Creative Freedom from the squad AND set every players long shot instruction to "rarely".
As well as this i play a deep defensive line and a quick counter attack, which means that most of my efforts are from my lone striker getting in behind the back four and having numerous 1 on 1 chances EVERY single game.
Players do still shoot from distance now and again, but these long shots make up only about one quarter of my efforts. I am actually having less chances because of this which i thought was helping, as most chances like i say fall to my striker in great positions.
Here are the stats from my last 12 Premiership games. After the first 14 games we were at least averaging about 1 in 6 to 1 in 7, but now its taking us an amazing 12 shots on target average before we score a goal?.
If all we did was shoot from distance i could ALMOST understand it, but it just is'nt true?, 3 in 4 chances is a good if not GREAT chance, yet the ball will just NOT go in the back of the net?.
Funnily enough our Cup goalscoring form is a very real life realistic just over 1 in 4 with stats as follows.
Shots(last 4 Cup games) 83 - 50 on target - 12 goals.
The chances we are getting are exactly the same as in the Prem, yet we are clearly averaging more efforts on goal from total shots and a X3 better finishing ratio?.
With this going on, i'm just short of being able to really get into the game and get a career going, tempted instead to find any way i can around the unbelievable shot/goal ratio?.
If anyone thinks i'm telling porkies about the amount of VERY GOOD chances, i'll be happy to upload pkm's or screenshots?.
Please SI, just fix this and i can finally enjoy the game?.
I think the problem is that there are too many very good chances each game. If it was more realistic in terms of chances taken then every game would finish 7-4. SI need to work on reducing the amount of very good chances being created. There's usually 5 one on ones every game...this isn't under 11's football where one ball kills the defence every game!! Just to clarify I love this game, and love the match engine but there are too many chances being created. It feels like good chances have to be missed to keep the scores realistic.

I agree with what you are saying, but why is it always US that MISS all the good chances?.
I find that even against sides like Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea, i still have the better opportunities, whilst they shoot from distance mostly?.
Trouble is when they do shoot from distance, it either goes straight in or deflects back out to another of their players, whilst my own long shots are "passed" back to the keeper, which invariably can be said about a lot of the 1 on 1 chances i get too?.
All I can say is I think the game is generating realistic results for quick tempo attack vs ultradefensive but for some reason the match engine is generating bucket loads of high quality chances for the attacking team which have to miss or be saved to match up with the score it has generated.
Basic rule of thumb I have found helps is
Heavy favourites - Low tempo, higher creative freedom (on key players)
Fairly even odds - Normal tempo and creative freedom
Heavy underdogs - High tempo, low creative freedom

how is this way of dealing with the problem realistic then? by the way i have tried most things u people suggested, low tempo low creative freedom and such, and truly less quality shots are taken resulting in less shots on target. sadly results are same. 50% of my games remain goalless for me as before. there is a problem if our world class strikers like torres have to be "less tempoed" to score a one on one or even a open chance.
I just wonder about the logic, people are saying that having 30 shots a game will usually mean not having many VERY GOOD chances, but on the other hand, i usually only let goals in from set pieces, snorters from distance or rebounds off snorters from distance, so whats the difference and why should the AI ALWAYS have a better shot/goal ratio than me?.
there are far too many shots per game, on average 40 per game which is ridicolous, i play 4-4-2 attacking with newcastle finished 9th in my first season scored 74 conceded 75
