It seems hard to play short passing with a wide formation, post-patch. So I 'd say, yes.Of course, this may all be down to specific formation.
Hope I am not raining on any ones parade here, but I don't feel that they are linked. And why should they be? Wide width is an attacking "mindset" whereas narrow width is defensive. Ide width is designed to drag the opponents out of there tight/defensive formation and narrow width is designed to make you team more tight so opposition has less room to move in. I cannot see why this would have anything to do with passing. You need better players (your teams overall potential verses your opponents overall potential) to make a short passing game work. Counter-attacking football should be applied with direct football as your team (perferably) will be defending deep. You want to get the ball further up the pitch (and quickly too) to cause the counter-attacking effect, whereas when you are pressuring your opponent further up the pitch you want to apply short passing to keep the ball in possession for as long as possible. After studying the match stats and match machine I cannot see anything that doesn't support this theory...
this is an interesting topic and one worth looking at. My problem is I play a pretty slow tempo with short passing and it just doesn't work, maybe the idea of opposites attracting works. If you play a wide formation your have to play more penetrating passes.
In real life If you compare United for instance with arsenal. United exploit space behind the back four so there passing is all about getting it to the strikers quickly as arsenal have players no more than 5 feet from eachouter there for a high tempo short passing game is quite effective.
I want to know how important are the arrows and using them correctly.

It should, and if it doesn't then I can only guess that there is something else wrong with your tactic causing it to not work. When you are pressing you opponent high up the pitch you want to play possession football and you want to be patience to create quality chances (ergo: short passing + slower tempo). I know that the previous FM versions were not functioning as they (FM makers) had meant it, but it is in this version. I feel passing should be mirrored with Defesive-Line...
I just played a slow tempo direct passing against madrid away with villareal and won 4-2. If you play a deep line your better telling your players to close down there own area. I hit real with 4 goals on the break aswell. plus I had 56% of the ball and 7 shots from 12 were on target. Opposites do work

I know that opposites can work as long as they are not totally radical (unconnecting some of the other sliders can cause a total meltdown of one's tactics). Reading your post tells me that you are doing several things right. I noticed, also, with tempo you can "unlock" them from passing. My own interpretation after studying my opponents in the match machine suggest that when the AI takes the lead it slows down the tempo. I just stick to "basic" rules and then work on from there. But I'm pretty sure if you have a much weaker team it might not work as well as it would having a class team...
