Default Weaving Shapes

Hi All. I was trying to show my wife the benefits of Illustrator over hand drawing certain line art and came across a difficult issue. What is the easiest way to weave two shapes in and out of each other same as the celtic knotwork on this page: http://www.bluestone25.freeserve.co.uk/sten.htm

The best I can think of would basically be splitting the image up into a couple of layers. One would be for top weave and one for bottom weave.

The real issue is this. We are concerned with time. We want the fastest solution possible. I know over time Illustrator will work out to be fastest but I am talking about in terms of just plain drawing these beasts.

P.S. Photoshop is acceptable as well.

If speed is the issue, your best option is actually a Celtic-knot font.

A very nice commercial one is available here:
http://www.clanbadge.com/knots.htm

A free one (donations welcomed of course) is downloadable here:
http://www.gis.net/~dansmith/fonts/celtbord/index.html

Alternatively you can create your own font based on available information, or simple patterning. No need to re-invent the Celtic wheel though...

Or better yet, have it entirely generated:

Working out the base tile takes a lot of time but once you have done the donkey work, it is quick and easy to make the borders, both rectangular and circular.

Here's a sampler of some of the stuff I have played around with.
It isn't a tutorial as such but let's you see how I attack the problem.

I'd say that Illustrator is the best way to create Celtic Knots from scratch. (Over Photoshop)

I'll post a couple of templates in the Resources if anyone wants.

Cheers, Al.

Default Celtics

Hi
I would like to share these images
I made the celtic graphic in Rhino3D, a rendering program that is really fast for doing outline work.
I exported it as illustrator file and then use the different filters in illustrator
The full proccess took 1.hour and 15 min.
If anybody would like the illustrator file, please email me.
good luck
i hope you like it.
